Sunland Nursery in Modjadjiskloof has so much more to offer than plants. Here you can purchase a number of well cared for trees, plants and flowers including 7 different types of mango trees, bamboo, 20 varieties of palms and ornamentals at wholesale prices.
The nursery itself is 3 hectares and is surrounded by Leopard trees and shaded net. While you are here, you go Quad Biking, bring your own Quad Bike and race along the purpose built tracks on the farm.
The Nursery is situated on Sunlands Farm which is at the foot of the Modjadji Cycad Reserve in Limpopo. When Doug and Heather bought the farm, there was a large Baobab Tree on the property that had been there for years, Doug figured that if the Baobab could survive all this time, so would a number of other trees, and they set to work.
This thriving nursery is popular amongst locals and tourists and one of the main reasons is because of the Baobab Tree. Carbon dating was done on the tree to estimate its age and to their surprise, the tree is around 6000 years old, making it older that the Giza Pyramids. The Baobab is 47 meters in circumference and a whopping 22 meters high.
The owners of the nursery had a marvelous idea and decided to clear out the hollow centre of the large tree, moving out compost build up and revealing the floor a meter or so below ground level. Voortrekker and Bushman evidence was also found during the clear out.
A square vent was made in the trunk to act as a door and a pub was built inside. This is the first and only bar, built inside a Baobab, hence the name, The Big Baobar!
This magnificent tree is rather exciting to visit, who can say that they have been inside a tree to order a beer? Not only is the tree home to some fabulous beverages but it is also home to a number of birds and a couple of owls.
