Taim-Go-Loer

The first thing to grab my attention, other than the obvious prettiness of our accommodation, is the name of the place we choose to stay just outside of Napier — a little town in the Overberg close enough to Caledon not to feel like a trek-and-a-half for a weekend break.

It's called Taim-go-loer.

I love words, and can't resist playing with this obviously lovingly selected phrase to describe our self-catering venue. Time to go and look, time for a walkabout? It sounds a little like pidgin English. That it has something to do with time standing still is obvious, as no sooner are our bags on the floor of the bedroom than time slows.

Ilze Vos, whose farm it is on which we stay and who also owns and runs the acclaimed Napier farmstall, suggests that it's Gaelic for something to do with time. On closer inspection 'go loer' are loan words from Irish and imply 'lots of', or 'galore'. So it's safe to assume that 'taim-go-loer' is Irishgaelic for 'time aplenty'.

Much later during our stay, over a glass of wine, Ilze will explain just how bad cell phone reception at Taim-go-loer is. “We fortunately didn't have to cut down any trees, but there's now a hole through the thicket of blue gums on the edge of the property that allows us access to a tower up on the hill behind it.”

Rest assured that you will have every excuse not to hook up to your Facebook and email accounts whilst staying on Ilze's farm, giving full credence to the plenty of time analogy. Whilst this is anathema to many, for me it is the saving grace of staying on a farm – a valid excuse for not checking-in with anyone. “Sorry, I'm out of cell phone range” has to be top of my list of requirements when going away on a down-tools break.

There are other elements too that always make time away a pleasure – like whether or not your hostess has provided you with a coffee plunger and quality ground coffee, cotton percale bedding, a down duvet, soft towels (and plenty of them), extra blankets, body lotion and soap in the bathroom, enough cutlery and crockery so that you don't have to wash the four only plates to enable you to eat the next meal, freshly cut flowers and access to a supply of fire wood.

All of these Ilze meets with gracious ease. Her years in the hospitality and food industry, as well as the thirteen spent creating the Napier farmstall, mean that she knows what will make her guests yearn to return.

By now the farm's three ridgebacks have made their way onto the cottage veranda to say hello. Zorba, Zaria, and Luka (or looney tunes as Ilze fondly refers to the littlest and possibly the maddest of the three) are eager to make our aquaintance. And they're well behaved farm dogs whom we welcome into the space that is ours for the weekend.

The wonderful, big living area that is the veranda is the new addition to the beautiful old cottage Ilze inherited with the farm. The cottage might still have authentic appeal and a peach pip entrance hall, but Ilze realised that it desperately needed a bit of TLC, as she puts it, and a lounge/dining area.

Not only did she carefully create a modern, spacious space with concrete sideboards and shelves, but there is also a large fireplace and three generous steps that lead outside, that function as a further stoep if you throw down a cushion or two – a wonderful space to greet the new day. The windows are in fact canvas, similar to those you would find in a tent, that wind up or down weather dependent.

Whilst we are there, summer finds us. We hoist the sails, so to speak, and let the day in. There are bees aplenty around the lavender that lines the walls of the veranda, two donkeys gracefully munch grass all day in the field just beyond the front door, and raise your eyes and the hill above the farm is a tapestry of wheat fields about to be harvested. Aaah, this is the life.

Just then an Orpington cock strutts by. He's huge, the size of a small dog, his honey-coloured plumage jauntily set off by a bright red crown. And he's as proud as punch of his harem of hens, who also wander about foraging for seeds. Their consistent clucks and murmurs add further farm noise to the environment. Later Ilze takes my six-year old to see her chicks that are secreted away with their mothers inside a hen house.

Reaching Napier is a matter of minutes' drive. The small farm is only 15km outside of town (10km on the road, a further 4.5 on a dirt road). Whilst we're tucking into the Black Pan breakfast at Ilze's farmstall, unexpected fairies enter our abode and wash our dishes and set up a new fire ready to light. These little things make me feel incredibly spoilt. The effects are palpable. I begin to unwind, worry less about the small stuff. Find time to stretch out on the couch in the sun and snooze, whilst my son whinges about lack of attention.

A little further up towards the farm gate there is a wonderful dam that, if it were hot enough, we would use as a place to dip our toes. But as it's clear skies overhead, with a bit of a chilly wind, and we're itching to get in a walk, my son and I head out of the gate towards the wheat fields that surround the farm.

Ilze has aready instructed us in the art of walking in the surrounds. You simply pass through any farm gate that hinders your way – we are free to roam. And it's a wonderful feeling. From the right there is the sudden loud honking call of two blue cranes as they take flight, their noise a complete surprise and not the sound I was expecting a blue crane to make. Over the course of the weekend I hear them often. A turkey is probably the closes bird noise with which to compare it, although it isn't doing it justice.

Our weekend is too quickly over. We've explored the main street of Napier thoroughly, we've walked, talked, cooked and slept soundly. The break has been just that, a wonderful time away from it all. Hope we can return soon.

Wildekrans Country House

A recent midweek break found us on the road to the lovely Elgin Valley, touted as an ideal destination for nature lovers and wine enthusiasts, and generally for anyone wanting a break from city life out in the country. The first surprise is its close distance to Cape Town. Under an hours drive from the city makes this a great destination when pressed for time or for those who don't feel like driving for hours to their destination. And once you get there? The views and ambiance will have you believing you drove for hours to get to this little piece of paradise.

So what do you do when you get to Elgin? There is lots ... if you are an ardent gardener, explore the various specialist nurseries, or go late in October when some of the finest gardens in the country go on show during the "Elgin Open Gardens" weekend. Not to worry if you don't have a green thumb as there is still plenty to keep you busy in Elgin. If you enjoy wine explore the Elgin Wine Route, a surprising find as Elgin is predominantly an apple growing region (so you might think a cider route is more appropriate). However, this is an extremely productive route with leanings towards the fruity flavours of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. If you are here for a few days you should plan a lazy day of wine tasting accompanied by a delicious lunch at one of the wine estates.

And overnight? We chose to stay at Wildekrans Country House which is tucked behind the Houw Hoek Inn and offers various options — either Bed & Breakfast in one of their suites or, if you prefer to self cater, see if you can book their cottage. It sleeps up to four guests and looked ideal for a family with two kids. We opted for Bed & Breakfast and were warmly welcomed and shown to our suites. The suites were simply lovely! Understated decor with every amenity you could wish for, beautifully decorated and immensely spacious, we slept extremely well in utmost comfort. Big four poster beds with crisp cotton linen, big fluffy pillows ... and nothing but the sound of the country to lull you to sleep!

Featured in numerous magazines and part of the well known "Elgin Open Gardens", the gardens at Wildekrans are simply stunning. Although we visited in Autumn which would not be "prime" garden visit time, we found the garden most charming and enjoyed our afternoon walkabout (with the chickens letting us know we were on their turf!) Beautiful sculptures and decorations, a lovely pool area to enjoy, an Olive Grove and meandering stream ... you will love it and might not ever want to leave!

Breakfast was superb. Served out on the patio on a warm mid-Autumn day with fabulous unobtrusive service from the lovely ladies of Wildekrans. A quick stop in their Barn which doubles as an Art Gallery and gift shop and I left armed with a superb bottle of Wildekrans Shiraz and a couple of artsy nik-naks — lovely to arrive home with a few gifts! Later, whilst chatting with the owner, Alison, we were given plenty of tips and advice about what to see in the area and a bit further afield. We also learnt that Wildekrans Country House is a two night stop on the four day slack-packing trail around the Groenlandberg — the "Green Mountain" Trail includes four star farm stays, delicious country food sourced from around the mountain and you will enjoy the views, fauna and flora of the gigantic Overberg. Stanford Valley

Stanford as far as the crow flies is not far from Cape Town. But there can be the odd occasion when, by the time you reach there, after having battled the numerous sets of lights through Somerset West, you feel slightly as though you've been through a mangler. Which is even more reason why, in the shadow of the Akkedisberg Mountains in a valley through which the Klein River flows, a stay in Stanford Valley can feel a little like coming home.

The Overberg is quite the most beautiful part of the Western Cape. With its rolling wheat fields, sheep and beef farms, gorgeous mountains, seaside and riverside villages, and swathes of sumptuous scenery, one is easily enraptured. Stanford Valley, despite sounding like a valley in which the town of Stanford lies, is infact a beautiful organic farm, which also offers a guest farm and retreat centre, roughly 10 kilometres outside of Stanford on the R320. It's position is breathtaking and the mostly restored buildings and outbuildings incredibly pretty.

Loaded awkwardly with some of our baggage (why, oh why do we always pack as though venturing forth for a month when only away for 10 days!) I stumble over a little piece of fluff that I just manage to see out of the corner of my eye. Apple, one of two resident husky puppies (the other is aptly named 'Tiser as in appletiser – get it?), just misses feeling the edge of my boot on his paw as I make my way to our cottage.

Our cottage is small, but homely and thoughtfully decorated, complete with stoep and gardens, although the scorching summer sun and lack of water in the area has put paid to any of the grass that was here, and even some of the fynbos appears to have suffered. Certainly the Cape gooseberry bush just outside our door has seen better days.

Whilst we offload, a series of piglets and their positively bossy mothers come snorting by, although they give us a wide berth. And on the other side of the barn we spy an entire coup of bustling hens, where the farm manager's son, Sebastian, goes on daily forays for eggs, which you can buy along with raw honey from the Manor House.

There's a batchelor party on the go on the farm as well that night, but apart from watching them pretend to play some sort of ball game, after a fair number of drinks judging from the upended beer bottles in the bin outside the conference centre where they've based themselves for meals, we hardly hear them – the space is big enough not to fall over one another. And our hosts have placed us far enough away from them not to be affected, which is something of a relief as I hate having to gear myself up for a whinge session.

Stanford Valley has an interesting history. The 440 hectare farm was originally founded by 9 members, but soon increased to a group of 46 friends who have invested in the farm – it was something of a dream for the like-minded group to form a sustainable and environmentally friendly space where other like-minded people could come and stay. Out of this came the 'future thinking and sustainability festival' known as Freewheeling, which is due to celebrate it's fourth year in October this year.

I've missed the festival three years in a row now. But it sounds incredibly exciting. It's something of a meeting place (you can stay in the cottages or camp in a site just across the river on the farm – complete with eco showers and compost loos, if that's your kind of thing) to explore post-carbon and green issues, renewables, land and agriculture, education economics, wellness and personal developments, arts and culture and community development.

All round, it's one of few places to meet fellow greenies, economists, artists and thinkers and find out what's happening and what could still happen in South Africa, and infact the world.

The farm grows wheat, oats and barley organically, which it sells to farmers in Caledon chiefly for feed (good to know that somewhere there are cows and sheep munching on organically grown products!). They're also experimenting with organic rose geranium and lavender for essential oils, and their cattle, a friendly lot who maintain their distance with the aid of a couple of strategically placed fences, help restore the soil.

The next morning is Easter Sunday and we're up early to see what the Easter bunny has hidden for our son (one of us slips outside whilst we distract him with eggs inside). As usual it's an overabundance of eggs and bunnies (that's the last time I invite granny for Easter!), and I'm forced to relocate some of them before my son begins displaying his newly acquired mathematical dexterity and counts them. Once that's done, he'll keep tabs on just what has moved from his basket, and by Christmas he won't have any teeth left.

But early mornings are for exploring and the farm has a number of dams along the dirt road above our cottage. Whilst one of them is dry, the other has a breathtaking beauty in the early light of a new day. There is a simplicity at Stanford Valley that is hard to emulate. The mountains are virtually close enough to touch, the trees along the banks of the now dry river rustle gently in the wind, a constant reassuring voice, and there are the call of birds I've never heard.

Water on the farm comes from a mountain spring at the back of the farm that feeds the dams, and which does not need the assistance of chemicals, thankfully, for use on the farm or for drinking.

Whilst there we have a look around the conference area. It's been given four stars by the Tourism Grading Council and is quite an impressive space with a main conference room that can divide into two, and the usual required paraphenalia (TV etc.). And the catering section too is wonderfully decorated and able to take large groups at a time. And all of this in a thatched roofed, white walled historical building. I can see the attraction.

Nick, his partner Juanita and his mother Cathy now manage the farm and the guest farm. They're still finding their feet but they chat to me about the upgrade they intend making after Easter, to spruce things up a bit in the cottages. Whilst we chat, 'Tiser continues to nip Apple's ears until I'm tempted to pick up the smaller of the two to defend her from his antics. They barrel over the vegetable garden, which remains remarkably unscathed, considering.

Our three days pass too quickly. But not before we've sampled the eggs and bought some raw honey – as scarce as hen's teeth back in Cape Town.

Cobbit of McGregor

We find the house via a combination of directions from McGregor's locals and the ability to follow our noses once we have the rather obvious house in sight – there are not many homes in McGregor that look quite like it. Outside is a sign – cobbits cottage. It's an apt description of what stands before us, built completely out of earth and serving as MAT's headquarters.

Jill is larger than life. She would have to be. After building her own house out of cob she is the walking epitome of what it is to live sustainably, off grid — no link-up with Eskom at all — perched on the edge of McGregor where the town joins the Krans Nature Reserve. She is also, when we finally meet after having been virtual friends via email for a while, a wonderfully warm individual who is only too keen to show us around her home, and drop pearls of wisdom about how best to go about building your own home out of earth into our ears ...

Jill runs the McGregor Alternative Technology Centre. There is CAT (centre for alternative technology) in Wales, and then there is MAT in McGregor, and now that we've visited Jill, we can tick both off our list of very desirable places to visit. What I love about MAT though is its total lack of pretention and its down-to-earth owner.

Jill has really only just properly finished building her house – it's taken her twelve years, in stages, and now it has a second storey and even a roof out of cob (something even she admits is a bit of an experiment). There are photos on her website that reveal it wasn't always this way. Initially it was just one floor and to start with, she had to content herself with living and cooking on her verandah whilst sleeping in what is now her study.

One of the anecdotes she entertains us to is when, leg broken and in a cast and lying on the bed whilst her sister hastily packed her underwear in order to take her back to convalesce in Cape Town, there was a knock on the door and various 'important people' arrived to see an example of a cob house. And see it they did, as well as her underwear. In her enthusiasm for a more sustainable way of living, Jill will stop at nothing to share her knowledge.

Cob building, for those who are initiates, is that wonderful type of clay-looking, rough finished type house that is slowly becoming more and more trendy, particularly in small towns like McGregor. Cob is a mix of clay, sand, straw and water and involves a lot of foot stomping in order to get it to a dough-like consistency so that it is ready to make walls, cupboards and other parts of the house. The idea too, when building sustainably, is that most of the materials come from just 'outside your back door', using as little factory-produced material as possible.

Normally local invader trees are used for the house's structure and Jill shares with us the secret of cutting three days before a full moon when the sap is still in the ground and won't attract woodborer. Lying around her property are the offcuts that still remain from building the cottage down the bottom — there is a cottage at the end of the garden, a rather modern cob rendition that now serves as a B&B, that is known simply as the cottage. Most people use local grasses to thatch the roof, but I see that Jill has used tin for the cottage, which includes a couple of recycled motor car windows and coloured wine bottles in the windows.

MAT has been promoting alternative living via a series of cob, strawbale, dry stone walling, wattle and daub, permaculture and alternative energy workshops for the last twelve years. Jill can be found in places like Hogsback and in her home town on a regular basis giving workshops to the avid followers of sustainable building – sustainable in the sense that if you simply leave the house to 'rot' it will eventually return to the earth with but a few car windows and bottles left for someone else to use in a hundred years or so.

But Jill is about ready to slow down now. Her efforts have produced an entire following of the age-old methods of building and others now carry on the traditions that she has played a huge role in initiating. The little cottage down at the bottom of the garden — only her vegetable garden, chickens and compost heap to separate it from her own — is a recent acquisition.

It is modelled on one of the architectural designs a local architect drew as examples for RDP houses — the inner dimensions of the house are the same 40 sqm required for housing specs – only the verandah adds something extra. And it's made completely out of cob, wattle and daub, and adobe brick. It took 121 days to build and 19 days to decorate, and is a living example of how all people could live, if government were only prepared to spend a little more on RDP homes (and not a whole lot more either).

It is also incredibly pretty, surprisingly spacious, and beautifully furnished. Jill has already had two parties of guests to stay who have enjoyed their time here immensely. We wander through and get a pleasant surprise in the bathroom – the shower is a gorgeous mosaic where it stands at the end of the room beyond the compost toilet (Jill's personal design, which is a lot cheaper and easier to implement than some on the market, involving a black bin..but that's another story).

Jill's cat has taken quite a shine to me by now and she and I sit a while and connect whilst Jill shows my other half around the grounds – they bond over chicken sh** and natural pool designs. There is something about the McGregor magic that is starting to work its effect on me. Next thing I'll be moving here and building a cob house...

Great for Families

Waiting for holidays to simply 'happen' when you have children is tantamount to expecting your fairy godmother to make an appearance, wings and wand intact. The chances are that the holiday, unless other children and a ream of activities are 'on tap', could go horribly pear-shaped and find you in the starring role of circus ringmaster responsible for a list of children's entertainment.  If you want 'down time' then a little planning doesn't go amiss.

There are several child-friendly venues in South Africa that cater for exactly this. Whilst not everyone's idea of a holiday is getting cozy with a host of other couples with whom you have only  children in common, gone are the days of 'holiday camp' style venues. The big bonus about this particular choice is the tree houses. You and your family will truly sleep in the trees, surrounded by lovely woodland trails and a forest where you'll find fairies, literally. It is probably not a good venue for very little ones, but for bigger kids this is veritable paradise. The uniqueness of being in a wooden treehouse/tent, the safety of the surrounds that allows them to explore the forest on their own, the swimming pool and games room with outside braais, and the sheer beauty of the surrounds make this venue a holiday to remember. There is also the bonus of being right on the Garden Route and just outside Sedgefield should you want to wander further afield, where the local markets and beaches mean that you can venture forth. But the towering milkwoods, yellowwoods, candlewoods and accompanying bird life and sense of adventure, should keep you and your children going for days.

Cathedral Peak Hotel, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

This venue is a no-brainer. A friend of mine has two small boys and she's returned twice, which should give you an indication of how they get the balance just right (my friend is difficult to please at the best of times). Family friendliness aside, it is also set in the Drakensberg, which has to be one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa and a World Heritage Site. The expansiveness of it all never ceases to overwhelm. Whilst I feel it only fair to warn you that the venue is big (104 bedrooms) which means it can get a little impersonal, the million and one activities for children (with or without you) more than make up for it. Every day there are planned activities during peak holiday season, and there is a separate children's dining room and babysitters on tap. Five course meals for the adults are the stuff of legends. And the frenzy of so many people easily dissipates into the beauty of the surrounds. Enjoy the gorgeous walks, the views, the amphitheatre and time out.

Whilst you have to travel far to reach here, the remoteness and the incredible access to game that includes the kalahari lion (those with a black mane) is more than worth it. The park is 3.6 million hectares of conservation where red sand dunes and little to no vegetation reflect the state of the two dry riverbeds – the Nossob and Auob. This is really for children over five, particularly for those who love the idea of living in the wilderness and tracking game (and which eight year old boy doesn't hanker after just that). You will accompany legendary 'hunter gatherers' of old as they track the spoor of different animals through the desert, identifying local plants, trees and birds. The lodge includes 24 beds overlooking an enormous salt pan where animals come to drink. This is a real experience.

Hebron

There is something about travelling that brings with it an element of the mundane. I'm talking about that glazed eyes feeling one begins to emit after an hour or two in the car so that even when faced with the incredible beauty of a pass like the Piekenierskloof, which marks the entrance to the Cederberg and Olifants River Valley (isn't it slightly freaky the way the river flows the wrong way?), and which wends its way down to the town of Citrusdal, you remain slightly impervious.

To call the Piekenierskloof Pass, which links Piketberg with Citrusdal on the N7, stunning is to do it a disservice. In reality it is a series of rather daunting twists and turns that overlook a patchwork quilt of multi-coloured farm fields, beautiful blue mountain ranges in the distance. In days gone by there weren't any wheat fields down  below one, and most of what you see would have been Renosterveld ...

It is the type of pass that makes you glad to be alive and which renews your passion for a country filled with breathtaking moments. It serves as the dividing line between the Swartland and the valley of the Olifants River, and must have been one mission to build.

But our story begins on the crest of the Piekenierskloof Pass. At a place called Hebron. It comes highly recommended. It is well rated amongst those in the know. Which isn't usually enough to promote a stop anywhere, but on this occasion we managed to find our way without any untoward impediment (a major achievement with a four-year old on the back seat) and there was enough peace and goodwill in the car not to prove something of a contagion to those we might meet at the stall.

It didn't take long with our snooping around the pretty area of the Hebron farm stall, called Tant Dollie after the old stall that was on the farm when they moved here, for Steve to come out to greet us. Steve and his wife, Caro (and their four children), live on Hebron – the farm stall, coffee shop and guesthouse. It's actually a working farm too, and we stand chatting close to some macadamia nut trees, and seriously pretty buildings that make up the farm stall — the coffee shop and something that is in the throws of being built. A foreman sits taking a welcome break in the shade. This, we later learn, will be the new self-catering bungalow with views out over the Piekenierskloof Mountains.

Steve is entertaining. We stopped intent only on sampling the wares of the stall, but we find that we remain far longer, swopping notes with the chef, baker, dad and entrepreneur who has managed to turn his mother-in-law's farm into a wonderful country break at the top of a hill. Steve not only bakes his own bread, he also conjures up sausages, smoked chorizo and salamis, and the farms jams and marmalades from their own fruit. He comes to greet us in his apron – there is a huge vat thing to one side of the coffee shop stoep that testifies to major preserve production — but he says he has yet to use this gargantuan machine and must return it to the neighbour from whom it is borrowed.

A large chalk board on the exterior wall of the coffee shop regrets that it cannot accept credit cards, that it is closed on Sundays and Mondays, but that you are very welcome to Hebron where you can eat breakfast until noon – including homemade granola and yoghurt, homemade waffles, almond and vanilla shortbread, and rooibos and cranberry scones with whipped cream (all at seriously reasonable prices, may I add) – a wonderful combination of sandwiches on exotic breads like sourdough bruschetta and toasted focaccia, salads, one or two lunch dishes that include dishes like soup of the day and smoked snoek croquettes with a green salad grown in the garden, and something extra for kids to enjoy. Pity we've only just had breakfast...

Steve gets to talking about the six guest rooms he has here, hidden around the corner of the coffee shop (which also has a lovely interior perfect for colder days, decorated with a few nooks and crannies filled with wooden tables and chairs) and cuts us a slip from the macadamia nut tree — we're hoping it will grow back in Cape Town; wishful thinking, no doubt.

I take a wander round the back to sneak a look a that the rooms around the pretty verandah, dripping in what looks like young wisteria vines, three of which overlook the Sneeuberg Mountain and Citrusdal valley. The other three rooms share a lovely secluded courtyard, the shade of which is provided by fig trees. And there's a swimming pool out front, complete with deck and loungers. There is more than a suggestion of the other Hebron that nestles on the southern West Bank of Jerusalem here, and I now understand the reason for the name.

One of the rooms is self-catering, and room six, which is detached from the main building, not only features its own free-standing Victorian bath but also makes for a wonderful honeymoon suite; Hebron provides a 'honeymoon service' for the room – think roses, champagne, candles and chocolates.

My son has now taken a serious shine to Steve's daughter, Emily, who has wandered away from her brothers and sister to see what is keeping dad — there are important things for him to do, like keep the peace whilst the boys fight over tadpoles, and swing her upside down.

It is time to leave. We're on the road to Paternoster, and Steve quickly outlines an alternative and certainly prettier route via Eendekuil and the R365. Just as well as the N7 appears to have a series of road works just past the turn off to Eendekuil — ah, the satisfaction of knowing you have plan B ahead of the game.

But before we pile into the car, Steve nips into the farm stall and brings us a bottle of mebos to sample, on the house. It's our first attempt at this specialty and we later enjoy it thoroughly with bread and cheese.

L'ermitage Franschhoek

I don’t often get the opportunity to enjoy five star treatment, but a night at “The Hermitage” in Franschhoek was a stay to be remembered. L’ermitage is exactly that, a retreat in the heart of the Franschhoek valley. The Franschhoek  mountains form the backdrop to this beautifully located chateau and villas. Our unit overlooked a quaint little dam, overshadowed by the majestic mountain range, and a chorus of bird song and duck harmony greeted our sunset and sunrise respectively.

Increasingly popular in the hotel context seems to be the self catering unit, with the option to indulge in the restaurant and room service on offer. The villa’s kitchen was well equipped, complete with a combination washer/dryer for clothes. The unit contained its own combined lounge and dining area, which was overlooked by the open plan kitchen ...

The two bedrooms were both en suite with the second bedroom leading onto a shower, while the main bedroom contained full bathroom facilities. The pride of the unit must be the resplendent main bedroom, with its views of the mountain and luxurious bath tub, which takes the centrepiece in the room. With tasteful down lighting one can enjoy a spacious and relaxing soak in the tub, accompanied by the toiletries which are on offer. The shower is also a refreshing affair, with plenty of space to incorporate the large rose head and not necessarily wet one’s hair.

Our stay was crowned by a visit to the L’ermitage Spa, housed in villa one. The resident therapist was friendly and firm in her massage technique, which left us ready to wallow in the tub before heading out for supper. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and courteous and we were supplied with everything from a welcome orange juice, to the weather report for the next day.

Franschhoek is certainly not the quaint village of days gone by, nor does it have the prices to match, but if luxury and professional service are what you are after, then L’ermitage is certainly a competitive choice.

Old Mac Daddy

The weather was divine. It was a beautiful winters day, with rays of sun tickling your skin with warmth while leaving the sky clear and beautiful, when I left the hustle and bustle of the city and in just over an hour’s drive and a dirt road later I saw before me glistening Airstream trailers nestled into the hillside ... We had arrived at the Old Mac Daddy in the Elgin Valley.

Our first port of call was to sit and relax on the deck to enjoy one another’s company and soak in the setting. I was told that the dam was soon to be filled with trout of many sizes and so those fishing enthusiasts will have plenty of fun, although once you see the deck I’m not sure you will want to leave that spot ...

I was looking forward to spending the night in a trailer, it’s a unique concept and it’s not every night that you get to call home an Airstream trailer. What makes this accommodation in Elgin even more unique is that each trailer has been individually decorated according to a designer’s chosen theme. We went to have a look at some of the trailers and I was certainly taken a back to the imagination that some people have, you really need to see it to believe it. Each trailer has a postbox, one of those old school American ones with a flag stating the name and is a great welcome to your room.

Slightly different to the rooftop trailer park at the Grand Daddy the Old Mac has given you extra space and has added on a bathroom and lounge area as well as a deck to really give you some space. The design is simple and I like to think of it as rustic-chic as the furniture and soft finishing’s have their own feel. Think bucket stools and outdoor seating where you can change the back rest according to how you’d like to sit. The trailer then becomes your bedroom and you really can decide how you’d like to spend your time there. You can take it as just a place to sleep or you can immerse yourself in the design and explore each and every detail of the room. Believe me there is detail in everything.

The rooms have interesting names that hint to their inside theme. Give Bees a Chance is burst of yellow with honeycomb and bee trinkets dotted all around the interior. Dirkie Sanchez is a theme for the young at heart with a wrestling ring as a bed and costumes to dress up in, a wacky concept but once you’re in there you can almost hear the crowd roaring in anticipation. Yellow Submarine comes complete with a real periscope where you can get a unique view of the valley, nowhere else will you find the inside of a submarine in a trailer above ground!

I didn’t mind which trailer I stayed in and asked to be “surprised” and I had a happy surprise when I was escorted to the For Better or for Boerewors trailer. What a treasure trove of memories and fabulous things to look at. A typewriter at the ready to send a loved one a letter, hot water bottle flower holders, bread baking in the oven and my favourite the Ouma Rusk duvet cover to snuggle under and many more lovely things to discover.

But these are only some of the twelve trailers suites at the Old Mac Daddy. With so many options it is easy to come back time and again and have a different experience, this is definitely not like a standard room at any other hotel.

Bigger families can take up residence in Daddy’s Villa a three bedroom self catering unit with magnificent views from the big glass windows. Although if I was staying there I would probably spend all of my time in the private outdoor bath which is just off the main bedroom, secluded and romantic this is definitely the place to restore your soul.

The main area of the lodge is called the Barn and for obvious reasons because from the outside it looks just like one. The Barn is where you check in and familiarise yourself with the place and for those of you with little ones there is a dedicated room just for them which has delightful murals on the walls and a big wooden apple tree in the middle of the room. Just outside is any active kids heaven with a huge wooden tractor which doubles as a jungle gym.

Upstairs you’ll find the restaurant and large bar area with fireplaces and over turned buckets as lampshades. The barn has gorgeous views of the valley and it almost looks like a photograph when you look through one of the huge windows. There was some very clever planning when the barn was built as there are not one but two balconies so if the wind is blowing on one side you can catch some fresh air on the other side without the wind hassling you to much.

Once you have settled yourself in you can take your time away at your own pace. With so much to do in and around the Elgin Valley, the Old Mac Daddy is a great base from which to explore the area. I think ideally this is not a one night stay (as I did) you should stay at least a day or two to really experience your surroundings. Shark cage diving in Gansbaai is only a short distance away, or why not go and taste some wines at the numerous vineyards in the area. If you prefer to sit and relax there are many spots in which to do so at the Old Mac Daddy, I would definitely suggest your deck area at your suite as the views are uninterrupted, or lounge around the pool or even relax in the Barn. For those of you who are active and need a gym you won’t have a conventional gym here but you do have the Lebanon trail right in your backyard and can either do a bit of a trail run or MTB to get those endorphins going.

Something I found quite special about the Old Mac Daddy is the relationship with the community, the land used is owned by the Vuki Trust which is a hugely successful BEE ownership project where the farm workers from the community own the land. The Old Mac Daddy is looking to improve this area and empowering the community. A few examples of how they’re doing this is that they are starting a library in the Barn which the community will be free to use, also on the go are small projects which will enable different parts of the running of the lodge to be community owned and managed. To start off if you’d like to hire a mountain bike or go on a trail you can do this from the lodge through this micro business. They soon hope to do the same with things such as the laundry service.

We went in winter and were lucky enough to have perfect weather but I do think the best time to go would be spring or summer. Spring because from the Barn you are able to see a lot of trees that will soon be bursting in pink colour with all of their blossoms, but I think summer would be best so you can appreciate the beauty of the outdoors.

The food is simple and delicious, on the menu for the evening was either tomato and vegetable bredie or bobotie and I was lucky enough to have someone to share my meal with so I got a taste of both. Let me tell you that the bobotie was out of this world and puts my mother’s to shame – but I won’t tell her that. After dinner you need to go and spend some time outside with your head towards the heavens. Living in the city you really can forget the magic the sky holds and on this evening the sky was shining bright with stars.

This is such a different venue that I think anyone would enjoy their stay, but each for their own different reasons. Bring your partner for a romantic weekend break away, come with your family or bring a group of friends to relax enjoy one another’s company and just have fun. The staff are relaxed yet attentive (and all very good looking…) and will make you feel like you’re at home because they have opened theirs to you.

I had a grand Old Mac Daddy time and will definitely be back with a group of my favourite people to have a few more laughs and enjoy the gorgeous setting.

I absolutely adore cooking and am always looking for new ways to learn and share experiences with friends. So I am very happy to have found out about a fabulous cooking course that is right on my doorstep and this is too good not to share ...

La Cabrière Country House in Franschhoek now offers cooking courses in the on-site Culinary Theatre presented by Camil and Ingrid where you will learn new and exciting dishes with which to treat and wow your friends at home. The course will begin at 14h00 in the open plan kitchen of the main house. You will be given an introduction as well as a menu presentation and an explanation of the recipes you will be tackling during the course.

Next up is where you get your hands a little bit dirty with the hands-on demonstration for preparing a 4-course menu. The course has both an intimate and informal atmosphere allowing you to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and to get involved with the practicalities involved with actually making good food. While you are cooking you will also be introduced to wine and food tastings as well as an insight into the importance of correct pairing.

La Cabrière Country House

You will be given the opportunity to freshen up in your room before returning to the kitchen at about 19h00 to enjoy your food creations. Dining with your fellow chefs will be a fantastic opportunity to share your highlights of the day and just how much you have learnt. All food and wine is included in the price of the course.

As mentioned the course is run by Camil Haas and his wife Ingrid. Camil has a long history with food and begun his career at only 15 years of age at a cookery school in the Netherlands (where he was born in 1966). He then went on to work in various well known establishments in and around the Netherlands.  He and Ingrid, his high school sweetheart, dreamt of starting their own business and soon this was achieved and after a number of awards and accolades they explored the countries of Turkey, Belgium and France — working in a number of Michelin starred restaurants thereafter returning to Holland to run a 6-bedroom country estate with 2 restaurants.

In 1999 they opened ‘Residence Klein Oliphants Hoek’ the old mission station in Franschhoek as a guest house and restaurant. Camil’s tasting menu was very popular and in 2002 they won Eat Out’s award for ‘Best New Restaurant’ as well as a number of other accolades.

You will be in extremely capable hands when you step into this kitchen. Not only will you have a lot of fun you will be able to take all of this experience back to your own kitchen to surprise your friends and family and treat the special people in your life.

Aasvoëlkrans B&B

Let me let you into a secret. Pretty Aasvoëlkrans is really worth your rand. To say that you are  spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation in Montagu is an understatement. There is so much to choose from that it can get a little confusing. But if you're after a little bit of luxury, with a huge dollop of contrariness, individuality and personality, then this country setting B&B is for you.

I have not been exposed to something quite as original as Aasvoëlkrans before. Set on an Arabian stud farm just outside town — Church Street is a mere 10 minutes walk from here — the accommodation is a series of completely individual and private garden rooms. Each has its own bedroom, en suite bathroom, balcony, and a couple their own kitchenette ...

Whilst this sounds like a fairly ordinary set up, it isn't. What makes it so very different is the personality of its owner, Jeanne. Jeanne is an artist. This is perfectly obvious from the minute you set foot on the property. Her quirkiness, love of colour and her need to transform every corner of the property with a series of unusual tableaus affects every nook and cranny, every bend or curve of the house and garden fall under her eccentric spell, and the result is a feast of art, statues, plants, colour and impact.

Aasvoëlkrans is one of the only B&Bs to find its way onto the art and crafts map of Montagu. Jeanne's walls, halls, garden and breakfast area are all host to the works of her own, her daughter's and local artists' works. Folded pieces of festive material and table cloths, cushions, bright pink chairs around her swimming pool, statuettes, wooden swings in trees, and a collection of pottery and crockery that adorn the shelves, not only of her kitchen but the accommodation as well, add to the effect. Everything, including the very plants in the garden, form part of a larger tapestry that turns the entire experience into a work of art.

Jeanne has spared no expense or passion when it comes to preparing a place of refuge for her visitors. Her rooms are filled with the type of opulence associated with luxury accommodation, so that even in the dead of winter, which was when we found ourselves staying in her newest flatlet that comes with a lounge kitchenette as well as a bedroom en suite, we lacked for nothing. The roaring fire in the ceramic fireplace kept the entire place sizzlingly warm, and our down duvet warm as toast whilst asleep. She even laid in a camping cot for our four-year old, who had a ball climbing her trees, playing with trucks stored in the resident wigwam for her grandchildren, and on the steps of the flatlet with his blocks.

Whilst Jeanne's choice of décor for breakfast, and just what food to serve every morning is very dependent on her mood, you welcome any evidence of artistic temperament and the inventive and talented way in which her stylish abode is put together. She is obviously skilled at adorning all around her in a way that is delightful to be in. Her attention to detail and the obvious love she has poured into her venue honours visitors.

And the farm is without doubt a beautiful setting. In a paddock close to the accommodation are a number of athletic Arabian horses. In the light of very early morning (let's not forget that despite the luxury, we were still in the company of a very small child set on waking as soon as the very first cock crowed) these horses are taken individually through their paces and it is too beautiful to stand and watch them as dawn breaks.

Then beneath boughs still dripping with early morning dew, we made our way across to the main house for breakfast – a sumptuous selection of fruits, yoghurt, crumpets, honey, cereals, coffee, tea, freshly squeezed juice and the option of organic farm eggs and bacon. All of this served on a series of gorgeous pottery bowls and crockery laid on brightly coloured table linen, flowers deftly plonked in a bucket, its very informality a way of offsetting the beauty of the flowers.

To keep us warm, Jeanne had ingeniously used a gas outdoor heater, the type you usually associate with restaurants during winter. She could do so as the breakfast room, just down from her kitchen, is set under high rafters. During summer, Jeanne serves her visitors outside under the trees in the garden, her swimming pool available for early morning dips – it gets hot here.

Jeanne is quick to whip out the art and crafts map as a way to show you around town. She  highlights those places worth a visit and outlines which restaurants in town are best for which meals. She is aware that we need child-friendly venues and points these out. Whilst we are eating, our abode is quietly being cleaned and aired so that when we return, it is ship-shape, flowers adorn the surface areas, and our bath towels are on the line to dry.

Whilst we are there she has a photographer visit to try to capture the charm of the place. It's difficult, and I can understand why she's already had two or three photographers around here. One has almost to stay here for a while, to drink it all in, before one starts snapping away. Aasvoëlkrans is an experience, and it can't be captured simply in a few photographs...

Old Mac Daddy

Drakensberg Sun

Going on holiday as a family of four is a rare and often expensive treat these days. And with two children under seven, a holiday is rarely a holiday!

I grew up in KwaZulu Natal Natal and the majestic mountains of the Drakensberg were always a welcome refuge for us.  But living in Cape Town, the ‘Berg’ as it is fondly known, is hardly considered a local holiday destination! However, when one has family in Natal, as we do, a visit to Granny can often be combined with a few days respite in the Berg. And so it was for us during the school holidays of April 2010 ...

Now we are not generally hotel patrons, and in fact most of my hotel occupation has been purely in a professional capacity, when the client is paying! Enter Discovery Health, who believe me are not always my choice topic of conversation! But the one benefit I do value, and ensure that we receive, is the travel benefits for Vitality members. Let me not bore you with the details as to how to become a blue, silver or platinum member on Vitality. I recall visiting the Drakensberg Sun, or Lifestyle Resort as it is now called, back in about 2001 and to be frank, it did not make an impression. On arrival in 2010, it was clear that the Easter weekend had been a busy one and our room was not yet ready. So we took a walk down to the dam, which contains trout and bass, for a gentle cruise on a boat, which runs twice a day, free of charge. Well that was a welcome start!

After that delay, we were shown to our room, which when booking through Discovery contains two double beds for a family of four. Now hotel rooms for two young boys, hold interest for as long as they can find something to open or shut, jump on or remove, and thereafter hold little fascination at all, which is one of the reasons for our sticking with self catering chalets! My first relief was that we were on the ground floor, with a sliding door opening onto expansive lawns, containing a ‘qolf’ course – yes an interesting spelling – which meant that I could just scoot them out of the door when irritation levels rose! Qolf, as it turns out, is an interesting combination of croquet and golf, and far more accessible to young children than golf, not that my son didn’t foster a somewhat unnecessary Tiger Woods swing while in the process!

The hotel setting is wonderful, with the Cathkin Peak range in full view from most parts of the resort. And the pool area, complete with children’s pool and loungers, is also overshadowed by this magnificent range. There are daily guided walks that depart at 08h30 in the morning and then a map of local walks, which you can undertake on your own, though I confess all we managed was a walk around the lake (about a half hour) and half of the route to the Blue Grotto, a two-and-a-half  hour walk.

What distracted me from such energetic ramblings, was the fact that a children’s programme, in addition to the usual activities, had been laid on for the holiday. Now I am skeptical at best of such programmes, because they are often poorly organised or ‘little Johnnie’ just doesn’t wish to participate! Well, imagine my surprise when our first day activities began with a pony ride, followed by soccer and then a game of frizbee. All before lunch, and all efficiently managed by a fulltime entertainment manager. Admittedly my younger son cannot yet cope with soccer or frizbee games, but he happily jumped on a permanently erected jumping castle, and toddled between that and the kiddies’ pool all morning. For the first time in seven years, I lounged on a pool chair reading, while keeping a lazy eye on the boys as they swapped one activity for the next! Entertainment ranged from bingo to a scavenger hunt, and from general knowledge quizzes to log painting, and everything was inclusive.

So now I am impressed, because I was somewhat worried as to how to get my two highly active sons  to sleep together in a double bed at night. They were so utterly exhausted that with the exception of the odd whine, they both conked out readily every evening, somewhat miffed with mother that they were not allowed to partake in the evening activities! Baby sitters are on tap to allow you to enjoy your evening meal alone, and I found the lady we hired friendly, experienced and reasonable.

And the meals were a complete gastronomic affair. Breakfast and dinner were included and believe me, there was no need for lunch! Our boys, being cereal breakfast eaters, satisfied themselves by beginning with a bowl of the porridge of the day, followed by all those treat cereals like cocoa pops! But we simply didn’t have enough space to accommodate the fresh fruit platters, cheeses, cold meats and joghurts, eggs, bacon and omelettes, crumpets, muffins and croissants! Dinner was a similar feast with a salad bar, roast and vegetable buffet, fresh line fish and stir fry corner, curry table (don’t forget we’re in Natal!) and dessert delights. Never mind not having to think of what to cook, it was now to decide what on earth to eat!

And if the resort type set up does not appeal, or you want a day away from it, you can visit the nearby Falcon Ridge, which put on a fantastic display by birds of prey, which are rehabilitated at the centre. Here are also canopy tours for the more adventurous, along with a visit to the neighbouring Drakensberg Boys’ Choir.  Squash and tennis courts are also on offer at the resort, along with a rather rundown gym.

On the sustainability front, The Drakensberg Sun is a part of the Heritage Environmental Programme, and when I asked for a copy of their EARTH booklet and environmental policies, those were immediately forthcoming. Speaking of which, I have rarely come across such friendly and efficient staff. I don’t know how they have got this right but I complimented the manager on it.

After four fun-filled and active days, it was time for us to depart for the airport back to the Western Cape. As my eldest son became increasingly quieter on the journey home, I enquired as to what he was thinking. A flood of tears accompanied by a, “I want to be back playing qolf!” more than  satisfied my curiosity! If I can get my planning right, and I certainly intend to, we will be back!

De Pakhuys

With all the long weekends in April, we decided to take advantage and head up the west coast, a route often less busy than the N1 or N2 as a getaway from Cape Town. Our destination was de Pakhuys, a rustic guest farm just north of Clanwilliam in the Cederberg.

Having completed our 3,5 hour journey, we were housed in Blokhuys, which is one of four houses on the property. Blokhuys contains two small bedrooms, with two single beds in each, and a smallish lounge/kitchen area with another single bed. For a family of  two adults and two children, it worked well, but I would not have liked to try and squash five into our little ‘huys’! Fortunately there was a lovely stoep onto which we spilled to have our meals, and a braai area, complete with wonderful sunset views, which made for a restful end to our day ...

The houses are self catered, providing linen and equipped kitchens. I noticed the air conditioning units, which are obviously a necessity in the summer — I recall on previous visits that Clanwilliam can get hot! And if that is not enough to cool you down, there is a wonderful infinity pool adjacent to Waboomhuys, which sleeps two, and Olienhuys, which sleeps up to six. I did not get a chance to look inside these houses, but suspect that it would be a good idea for two families to get away together.

The last house, Riethuys, appears to be the jewel in the crown, with a recently renovated thatch roof, and sleeps up to six people. Don’t expect cell phone reception at Pakhuys, but wifi is available throughout the property, as we noted from the 3G aerial erected above Blokhuys. Blokhuys did not have a television, but I believe that the other cottages do, although you will need to bring a DSTV card to get it working – something we could do without for a short weekend.

We kept ourselves busy by walking through the farm, (with the resident dogs in tow), which currently boasts a harvest of sweet potatoes. Thys, one of the owners invited us to pull up a few, which were a welcome addition to our evening braai. We were aghast at how pink they appeared straight out of the ground and harvesting one’s own supper was quite an education for our two young boys! The abundance of olive trees will also soon bear fruit, and we were sorry not to have been able to taste this family favourite.

A kilometre or so further down the road, we acquainted ourselves with the camp site, which is restricted to ten sites and is secluded and peaceful. It is bordered by a farm lake and there seemed to be adequate ablutions, with two hot water showers for men and ladies respectively.

On the second day we drove down to the campsite and then made our way on foot to the local waterfall. Our boys had much fun uncovering the yellow painted paw prints, which guided our trail, and we were well rewarded by the magnificent Cederberg setting that greeted us when we finally reached the waterfall.

Bouldering is also available at de Pakhuys and if you are staying on the farm, you get to boulder for free. We did not embark upon the Die Plaat trail but it follows a 4x4 trail, which is said to be particularly beautiful during flower season. A visit to the local bushman rock art site is another item for our next trip.

We enjoyed our visit to de Pakhuys and can happily say that it seems to be one of the few places that remains rustic and non-commercialised. We look forward to our return.
