Lets go camping!

It’s virtually that time of the year again, when a beach holiday for the family looms on the horizon and visions of just how one is going to wiggle one’s way into one’s swim attire with a fair amount of grace occupies one’s thoughts, if only for a moment. The rest of the time is taken up with trying to find the right campsite whilst dithering about how best to fit the entire house and the kitchen sink into the boot of the car!

The KwaZulu-Natal coastline is the most obvious choice when it comes to endless summer and warm waters. Along this strip of coastline between Port Edward and Durban is an uninterrupted playground of golden beaches, rocky coves, lagoon mouths, grassy slopes and, of course, the warm Indian Ocean that invites hours of water play …

The KwaZulu Natal South Coast conjures up a humid, perpetually warm landscape of rolling green hills swept with sugarcane, hibiscus, bougainvillea and the songs of birds. There is the inevitable highrise development to contend with too, but if you select your campsite carefully there is no reason why a complete escape cannot be secured and a break spent idly swimming, braaing, diving and rock pool rummaging cannot be yours for the taking.

Don’t forget the fishing rods, mini golf sticks (the portion of the coast between Illovo and Port Edward is wall-to-wall golf courses), snorkels, boogy boards and goggles.

The following list attempts to veer away from the ’sardine tin’ experience, although this is difficult to do with any assurance during peak holiday season:

Villa Spa, Illovo
This is one of few campsites that offers an intimate experience with a little bit of luxury thrown in (there’s a heated pool in winter with a sauna and spa bath). The campsite is set in 10 acres of beautiful, shady garden just two minutes across the railway line from Illovo Beach. Large, lawned and shady sites are available for caravans, campervans, motorhomes and tents. They also have log chalets set in amongst the trees for those who don’t want to do the camping thing. Another awesome setting on the banks of the Mtamvuna River, hence an ideal spot if you’re into watersports. Not your spot if you’re not into a bit of noise and a lot of fun, for it can get kind of vibey when it gets busy. 100 grassed, shady campsites are available, and whilst the beaches are only accessible by river, you can drive a short distance to the Port Edward main beach for safe swimming, super tube rides and a little more bustle. Boskloofswemgat has a number of simple cottages, all of which are roughly 20-30 metres from the river. This is a perfect option for both summer and winter – and activities include mountain biking, walking, fishing and swimming in the river.

A few km up the road, is the farm Krakadouw, owned by a lovely couple eager to share the tranquillity of their surroundings. The farm has two pristine swimming spots and accesses the Cederberg Wilderness Area with more extensive hiking trails. Permits are required, but can be easily obtained beforehand from Cape Nature.

If you are curious about rock art, at the start of the valley is the Warmhoek Rock Art Trail. The trail consists of six excellent sites and tours can be booked through the Living Landscape Craft Shop situated in the town of Clanwilliam. If guided tours impose a little too much formality onto an excursion for you, simply search for your own when out walking in the area. If you look carefully in the right kinds of places, you will not be disappointed.

Both these venues provide a great base to explore the area around Clanwilliam more thoroughly. The Clanwilliam dam and the Olifants River are easily accessible. If you want a good idea of true Cederberg beauty – rugged terrain and beautifully weathered rocks – a scenic drive over the Pakhuis Pass will definitely impress.

Dreamcatcher

On the edge of Tulbagh, shortly after passing along its bustling Main Road to where a rather imposing NG church sits overlooking the valley, there is an unobtrusive row of bluegum trees.

Just beyond this is the Bloekombossie restaurant – a rather quirky looking eatery that promises delicious teas and meals, complete with a curious cob house and thatched rondavel outback. Behind this lies Dreamcatcher cottage – quiet, peaceful and inviting, its attractive façade facing the Winterhoek range of mountains – the view captured from two of the three bedrooms …

Dreamcatcher Tulbagh

If you did not know it was here, you wouldn’t see the cottage when driving through Tulbagh. And this is only the first of a number of whimsical aspects about this particular venue. Dreamcatcher in the Chippewa culture is the inanimate word for spider or bawaajige nagwaagan, meaning ‘dream snare’.

Alongside one of the front windows of the cottage, with its tinned, pitched roofs, hangs one of these sacred items complete with feathers and beads. Despite its being but a small rendition, and the fact that tradition dictates one should hang these over the bed, the cottage must be imbued with this dreamcatcher’s spirit, for only the best of dreams filtered through whilst we stayed there. In fact, we slept better than we had in months.

Dreamcatcher Cottage

Dreamcatcher is an elegant, modern cottage, carefully kitted out with all the mod cons one expects from three-star self-catering accommodation, but done with a certain distinction and measure that allows one to feel immediately at home, whilst maintaining an understated luxury.

The website does not do the venue justice. In reality, it is far larger than it comes across in photographs, and the distance between bedrooms easily allows for privacy and time out. The heart of the cottage is the lounge and diningroom, its roomy rafters revealed. Attractive and aesthetically appealing, the fireplace houses a roaring fire that kept this open-plan area snug and warm on all four of the nights we were there.

Dreamcatcher

The diningroom opens up onto a pleasant, little enclosed verandah, as well as a braai area and plunge pool that, according to a number of enthusiastic visitors’ quotes in the guest book, is a lifesaver during the warm months of February / March. That and the air conditioning on the west side of the house.

The kitchen has most of everything you need, with pretty wine goblets, coffee machine, washing machine and bar fridge. Each of the bedrooms is ample in size and extremely comfortable, particularly the beds, which either means that the dreamcatcher in the window was doing its thing, or the beds and mattresses were as comfortable as they felt (I wish all accommodation would take a leaf from this book, as I can think of only one other time in which I was as comfortable, and that was in the Cotswolds in the UK!).

And it was just as well that the interior was as  generous and welcoming as it was, as I became more than familiar with the layout of the furniture due to a rather sick offspring, who was in no condition to leave the house for a few days. Despite this, my first foray into the village of Tulbagh bordered on enchanting. I snuck out as the light of the first day was beginning to dim, to explore Church Street.

Church Street is one of the main reasons for coming to Tulbagh – you’ll read about it in every information brochure. This beautiful street has some of the most notable and largest number of examples of Cape Dutch architecture, Victorian and Edwardian houses and national monuments in one street in South Africa.

Tulbagh

Even if you didn’t know about Church Street – it is not immediately obvious from a precursory drive through town as it runs parallel to the main road – the setting of Tulbagh, lying as it seems to do, in a secluded valley all of its own, surrounded by the Obiqua, Winterhoek and Witzenberg Mountains, is enough to make one want to stay awhile.

And there is so much to see and do here, that one would be hard pressed to do it all in a day, although Capetonians are venturing out here for an evening show at the new Saronsberg Theatre (directly connected to the Saronsberg wine estate), managed by partner in the artistic venture, Chris van Niekerk of Sewende Laan fame (Chris also runs Rosendal Teater set in the eastern Free State town of, you got it, Rosendal).

Tulbagh

The beautifully restored, formerly condemned building, now an intimate, little theatre on Van der Stel Street (the main street through town) plays host not only to a range of homegrown talent, but also to local stars like Sandra Prinsloo, Danie Niehaus and Koos Kombuis.

And all of this awaits one, even before setting out to sample the famous wines of the valley – Drostdy Hof, Blue Crane Vineyards, De Heuvel, Waverley Hills Organic Wines, Theuniskraal Wines, Twee Jonge Gezellen and Manley Private Cellar.

Add to this a list the length of your arm of places to visit, such as Kimilili Cheese, Moniki Chocolatier, the pretty deli Things I love, and a collection of often reviewed restaurants along Church Street, and you begin to see how one or two days is probably not going to do Tulbagh justice.

Which is why a venue such as Dreamcatcher is such a gem. And the reason its visitors return time and again.

Karkloof Spa

At Karkloof Spa we are proud to be custodians of an extraordinarily beautiful piece of land. It is one which reflects changing moods and colour palettes, according to the seasons, and which supports a large variety of plants, mammals, birds, insects, fish and other creatures. Unfortunately, as is the case with most natural areas, it has fallen victim to encroaching plants, most of them alien to this landscape; and to periods in the past, of overgrazing, frequent burning and inadequate environmental management.

For the past seven years, two experts in ecology and wildlife management have provided guidance on correct management techniques. A major component of this management has been the employment of a large team of people in removing alien plants from the property. This has resulted in the rejuvenation of many large areas, and it has been most gratifying to experience the restoration of indigenous vegetation which in turn provides our wild life with an extension of their natural habitat. A second component has been to use innovative management on the areas with poor quality grasslands in order to phase out undesirable grasses and replace them with high-quality ones. Although a slow process, this is proving to be a major factor in providing better grazing, especially for the buffalo and zebra populations.

Internal fences have been removed, drainage has been improved to prevent erosion of the landscape, Redbilled Oxpeckers have been introduced as natural predators of the debilitating tick population, and indigenous plants have been planted to bind areas around existing dams. Equally important is the creation of mud wallows and bare patches for species requiring such ‘mini-habitats’ for their well-being.

Karkloof Spa

All wildlife, the quality of the grasslands and the quality of water in the rivers and dams continue to be monitored on a weekly basis. A photographic record is kept of all the giraffe and rhino to keep a check on performance and numbers to ensure they are in harmony with the environment and the resources that they depend on.  A register is also kept of the buffalo (updated on a monthly basis) for the same reason. A record is kept of all births and deaths of the mammals and ostrich, and the findings are written into an annual status report with appropriate recommendations. Fish populations are managed to provide food for birds (Fish Eagles, Cormorants, Darters, etc.) and the rare Spotted-neck Otters (Clawless Otters also occur); also to feed on a variety of alien aquatic plants which choke the dams.

Vegetation is also monitored and managed to improve its in quality through mowing, selective controlled burning and removal of alien plants. Areas that were completely destroyed by the devastating Cyclone Demoina in February 1984 and by the September 1987 floods are now being rehabilitated. Access to the base of the Karkloof Falls had been denied our guests for many years, but a walkway, made of recycled fiber wood, is now being constructed to enable people to experience this magnificent feature of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

Green Building Methods
The majority of the Karkloof Spa building has been done utilizing reclaimed clay bricks from an unused staff compound on the property. Unskilled labour was employed to chip away all excess cement from the bricks and to deliver the bricks onto the building site.

The spa has been built with a combination of thatch and living roofs, the latter enabling small game to walk up and graze on the vegetation. Each building has been positioned in a manner that impacts minimally on the landscape. Buildings nestle in natural inclines, taking advantage of trees and rocks to provide small havens of changing beauty to our guests as they sit in quiet spots and reflect.

Instead of building one huge structure, the layout of the spa has been separated into functional ‘nodes’, joined by covered thatched pathways. In this way, our guests enjoy a continual communion with nature and animals as they move between treatments.

We have utilised building materials that are environmentally friendly, wooden paneling that does not contain formaldehyde in the glue; vanities that are made of wood, rather than melamine; non toxic wall paint; locally quarried cladding stones; and natural materials like glass, sandstone, wood, terracotta and stone. All of these have been selected over plastics and synthetics in the construction of the spa.

All grey water is recycled through wetlands back into the ecosystem. Toilets all have dual flush systems in order to conserve water. Products used on the property are all biodegradable and environment friendly. Drainage throughout the property has been upgraded to prevent erosion and loss of topsoil.

Our extensive planting of indigenous trees and retention of one’s adjacent to our buildings provides shade to ensure that less energy is used for cooling on hot summer days. This also provides colour and brings much of the incredible bird life to the doorstep of the visitor.

Products and Produce
On a product level, we have been vigilant in our choice of what is utilized in this environment. Spa products, like Pevonia, Lillian Terry and Spa Ritual, have been chosen for their organic or natural ingredients. There are no parabens or sodium laurel sulphate in these products.Both in our lodge restaurant, as well as the spa café, Green’s and Teas we source as much organic produce as possible. Our aim is not only to provide guests with the joy of using organic products on their skins, and eating deliciously fresh food, but also to enable them to experience the tranquility which comes from interacting with a healthy building.

As regards the ‘behind the scenes’ products that we use, we have not skimped on quality. This is an area where properties like ours are beset with many hidden costs, and the temptation is to utilize inferior or cheap products to save on expenditure. Our commitment to the environment simply denies skimping. Cleaning products, pest control and guest amenities have had to undergo stringent inquiry as to their environmental friendliness, their non toxicity and an absence of harmful chemicals. This is not an easy route, but is one which is socially responsible. Guest amenities are refillable in order to cut down on packaging and land fill. Collateral (printed marketing material) is printed on paper that has been farmed responsibly and is accredited by the Forest Stewardship Council.

We strive to provide an environment where people are eager to come to work each day. Due to the rural nature of our property, we have needed to supply housing to all our staff. We have made every endeavor to provide housing where people feel proud of the area they live in .

Karkloof Spa

There is always a need to maintain homes and deal with the issues that invariably arise within ‘families’; so we have employed a pastoral care giver who also acts as liaison officer between management and staff. Vegetable garden for staff to grow their own produce, as well as partnership with local suppliers of vegetables is in its infancy phase, but we plan for this to become an ongoing project.

The Community
The property supports two primary schools in the area. To date, we have built toilets, connected and provide ongoing electricity, as well as maintain the grounds of the schools.

In the spirit of ‘ubuntu’, we also strive to support our local community. High quality products for the lodge boutique get preferential choice if sourced in the Midlands.  Artists from the local community have been commissioned to produce artwork for the lodge. In fact, all original artwork that can be viewed at the property have been produced utilizing elements on the property. A well respected photographer who has exhibited in the metropolitan, New York, was commissioned to take photographs of the staff and the property. These can all be viewed at the boutique lodge and spa.

One of the neighbouring farms produces organic avocados and cold pressed avocado oil. This is utilized in the production of the guest amenities found in the villa. In itself, the process is an organic one, with people of different talents and outlook providing the synergy required in this ongoing process. It is our hope that, not only do we provide the guest with an outstanding experience of relaxation, comfort and rejuvenation; but that in doing so; we are able to plough back resources into the property, its wildlife and people, as well as our neighbouring community.

“The term ‘green’ certainly can be misused”, says Kathryn Johnson of Mosaic Farm, one of the few true eco-tourism establishments in South Africa. But their commitment to eco-tourism goes much further. Mosaic Farm itself was built according to Sustainable Building Practices. “All the stone on our buildings is from Mosaic, most (70%) of the thatch on the Lagoon Lodge has been sustainably harvested from Mosaic – the rest was purchased locally. Dead Milkwood branches were used as supports at the Lagoon Lodge. The furniture and countertops at the Lagoon Lodge were made from a dead tree that we bought, which washed up on the Milnerton Beach and other furniture was made by a local furniture maker in Hermanus.” Kathryn told us that this was done to prevent pollution from manufacturing and pollution from the transportation of materials and assisted with job creation. She continued, “Our outdoor picnic tables and trash receptacles are made from recycled lumber, we’ve used local, natural, durable materials for flooring, countertops, showers, etc. We use local suppliers as much as we can for meat, seafood, cheese and other products and we’re very proud of our organic vegetable and herb garden.”

Giving back to the community is also of the utmost importance when talking about eco-tourism, which Mosaic Farm clearly advocates:

Teniqua Treetops

It is not often that one is invited to sleep, eat and wash high up in a wild, indigenous forest canopy, surrounded by mountains, bird song, butterflies and, well not much else really. But the tented tree house resort set in the foothills of the Outeniqua Mountains right in the heart of the Garden Route does just that.

Not only does this pretty, tented treehouse destination lie roughly 23 kilometres outside of the equally attractive village of Sedgefield, but by all accounts a visit here is ‘quietly life-changing’. It is also one of few truly eco-friendly venues.

The creators of Teniqua Treetops emphasise that they have gone to great lengths to preserve the peace and quiet of the natural environment, have used natural materials in the construction of the tree houses, and have concerned themselves with minimising their energy use and impact on the environment.

They have incorporated a dry toilet system, pipe river water from the Karatara River for washing, whilst drinking water is harvested from rain (both sources are tested and potable); they process their own grey and black water and use no chemicals when washing or cleaning.

Despite, or because of, this there is a beauty to this part of the world that is totally unspoilt by the presence of the the tree houses. “Arrived and the staff were so welcoming, all the staff on duty that evening wanted to do something to make you feel so at home. The welcome was really overwhelming and so friendly, even the glass of local Muscadel had the warming effect. The rooms very warm and cosy, the views were breathtaking. It was what we needed being on holiday, a place to relax and feel at home.

The highlight was being driven around the town and neighbouring area of Montagu in one of their classic cars.  We were fortunate enough to have a guided tour by PJ in their 1956 Cadillac.  I would definitely pay them to take me out to a couple of wine estates situated close by for the day and just enjoy the wine, the conversations and obviously listening to the Beatles playing while enjoying your comfortable relaxing ride.

“Although our stay was short it is a time we will never forget. Game drives were amazing as they took us right to the action, we saw more in 2 days than we had seen in 2 yrs at other game parks. Whispering Whale

Situated in the tiny beach village of Jacobsbaai on the popular Cape West Coast between Saldanha Bay and Vredenburg, Whispering Whale is three luxury, self-catering or bed and breakfast apartments set amidst some of the country’s most unspoilt natural beauty and rugged coastline.

Despite the traditional lime washed houses enforced by strict building restrictions in Jacobsbaai, this is not rural living in a basically equipped cottage. There is a fully equipped laundry on the premises for those who succumb to staying a little longer, and why wouldn’t you? The central location of Whispering Whale is incredibly convenient for day trips along the West Coast – be it to visit other quaint fishing villages, wine estates or nature reserves – and the addictive quality of the spectacular sunsets quickly gets under your skin, and you wonder how you ever muddled through without this particular hideaway …

Tamakwa Country Lodge

Joshua and Gabby are two loving golden Labradors who are likely to give you an effusive greeting at the four-star Tamakwa Country Lodge nestled in Rosetta, above a scenic river walk with a striking view of the majestic Drakensberg. The lodge offers luxury bed and breakfast accommodation with comfortable cottage ambience, a lovely log fire and spectacular views from beautifully appointed verandas.

We stayed in the pristine two bedroom Lavender Cottage surrounded by blue pansies and sat, in the late afternoon on the verandah gazing down at the pink brush which hides the delightful riverside walk. Trout fishing can be arranged, but it was a little chilly to start messing around by the river.

Our cottage was beautifully looked after and lacked for nothing. Tamakwa also features a hidden treasure as far as fabulous food is concerned, in the shape of young chef Jonathan Crawford who creates a daily four course set menu at The Rose restaurant set within the main lodge and also open to those not staying at the lodge.

Tamakwa Country Lodge

We dined on a creamy Tom Khai Gai Thai soup, smoked salmon potato cake and, for the main course, a chilli and chocolate beef fillet served on spring onion mash with stir fry veggies and Madagascar cream sauce.

All as good as it sounds. In fact, it was difficult to make room for the decadent hazelnut dessert served with chocolate coulis and cream.

Le Franschhoek

The Cape’s latest resort hotel, Le Franschhoek, has opened its doors, presenting itself as the valley’s first retreat-style resort property as well as the perfect setting for a taste of the legendary Cape wine route. Eighteen months from concept-to-completion, located on the site of one of Franschhoek’s original country retreats, Le Franschhoek retains its luxurious charm along with a contemporary Cape sensibility and wineland architectural vernacular.

Contained within the vast estate are 63 elegantly-appointed rooms, conference facilities, a deluxe destination Camelot Spa (opening October), a la carte fine dining restaurant, unique al fresco Le Verger restaurant (opening late October and in which patrons sit within a fruit orchard), swimming pool, tennis court and authentic wine tasting venue for private functions. With its sylvan setting, Le Franschhoek is also destined to be a much-in-demand wedding venue.

Accommodation is luxurious yet rustic. Three double bedrooms offer crisp linen, warm duvets, blankets and hot water bottles for chilly nights. Two bathrooms (1 en suite) have showers, a bath and plenty of fresh towels. A loft above the fireplace offers an inviting sleeping area for 2 children.

The open plan living area has a cosy lounge with a stone fireplace and well-equipped kitchen with gas fridge\freezer and stove. An outside barbecue (braai) area is protected by a boma style enclosure. Lighting is solar powered (there is no electricity). Although self-catering, special arrangements can be made ahead of your visit for breakfast or picnic baskets.
