Photographs taken of Smitswinkel Bay on the False Bay Coast in the Cape. Smitswinkel Bay (or Smitswinkelbaai) is practically inaccessible and right next to the Cape Point Nature Reserve. Reached only by foot, it is worth the effort to get there. The bay here is popular for snorkelling, diving and fishing and the water is calm and great for swimming. Views are fantastic as the mountains are virtually to the back of the beach and one overlooks False Bay. Smitswinkel Bay lies just past Simonstown on the False Bay Coast …

Todays photograph was sent to us by Noula Bouwer as is entiled “Bird’s Eye View”. A great photograph of a giraffe, Noula has submitted a number of really great photographs to our current photography competition. You can see more of her entries at November Photography Competition. Giraffe are non-territorial, social animals that travel in large herds that are not organized in any way. They live in the savannas of Africa, where they roam freely among the tall trees, arid land, dense forests and open plains …

South Africa is a wildlife paradise offering umpteen numbers of national parks and game reserves.

Did you know that 24 October was the International Day of Climate Action? The intention of this day, organised by 350.org, was to lift public awareness on the need for an international climate treaty to reach 350. 350.org called upon people from every corner of the globe to find an iconic place in their community and incorporate the number 350 with this place and take a photograph. Once all the images are collected they will be delivered to world leaders and the media to show how unified the climate movement is …

We received the following stunning photograph from Naomi at Outdoor Video and Photographic (OV&P). You may remember her husband, Dave Estment, who fabulous photographs are often featured on this site. Here’s what Naomi had to say about the day and this photograph: “Dave & I visited Cape Town recently with Hills of Africa Travel and we went up Table Mountain on 24th October, which happened to be the 350 Action Day. We came across a group of rock climbers who were hoisting flags, etc, for the event. Dave took a great photo of them from the cable car.”

Quoted From the 350.org website:
On 24 October, people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet’s history. At over 5200 events around the world, people gathered to call for action on the climate crisis. Over 22,000 photos have been submitted so far! See them all on Flickr »

Lots of AWESOME photographs!!

Jennifer has submitted some of the most beautiful photographs (see previous featured photo here). According to the Wikipedia entry for Cape Dwarf Chameleon (Bradypodion pumilum), it is native to the Western Cape where it is restricted to the region around Cape Town. As with most chameleons, its tongue is twice the length of its body and it can be shot out of its mouth using a special muscle in the jaw. This gives the chameleon the ability to catch insects some distance away.

Established in 1895, this is the oldest game park in South Africa along with nearby St Lucia Reserve. Apart from game viewing drives there are self guided auto trails which provide information on both the management and natural history of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi game reserve. Guided walks can be especially rewarding in the early morning and late afternoon …

Todays photograph of a female Waterbuck was sent to us by Dror Orbach from Israel, taken on a visit to South Africa in 2008. The waterbuck is not aquatic nor much at home in water, but it does take refuge there to escape predators. The waterbuck is a large, robust antelope with large, rounded ears and white patches above the eyes, around the nose and mouth and on the throat. Only the males have horns, which are prominently ringed and as long as 40 inches.

Meerkat adults take it in turns to stand on guard finding a convenient spot where they can watch for predators, such as eagles. If danger is sighted, the “guard” gives a warning bark, and the meerkats flee to the safety of their burrows. While sentries keep watch, other meerkats take care of the young …

Go where the locals go … Well travelled Guest House owners, Pam and Steve Lord (Cape Rose Cottage in Camps Bay), are regular visitors to the charming village of Greyton. Says Pam; “It is so beautiful out there – one of my favourite places in the world”. Pam took a series of photographs on a recent weekend getaway to Greyton which she has kindly allowed us to share …

“Greyton is a picture-perfect rendition of an old town with its gravel roads, thatched roof cottages, pretty little gardens and beautifully restored buildings. The people of Greyton are friendly and the route into the village of Greyton along the R406 as it wends its way through the emerald hills and fields of wheat, barley oats and lucerne of the Cape Overberg, a most pleasurable drive. The sun always seems to shine in this part of the world and the oak-lined streets of Greyton are as much a way of life as the many outdoor activities …” (more at Greyton attractions).

They may look beautiful, even cute sometimes, but leopards are shy, cunning and very dangerous, especially when wounded. Leopards are very good tree climbers and can pull large prey up a tree to protect it from other predators or scavengers in the vicinity. They return later to feed again. Leopards still occur outside conservation areas …

Today we feature two of Greg Lumley’s photographs taken in the Langa township, an area made up of infamous singles quarters, hostels of migrant workers of the apartheid era, a squatter camp, a vast taxi rank, a community centre, and settlers. Langa is high on the list of ‘to do’s’ when visiting Cape Town and over twenty five percent of tourists take a township tour in an endeavour to ascertain the extent to which the squalor and deprivation of the previously disadvantaged have improved.

Says Greg “Life in the townships is very different from the suburbs and many cultural practices are alive and well. From a photography point of view you would have to be totally blind not to want to click in every direction …”

This evening we received a “tweet” via Twitter from @CapeTown_2010 that reads … “Installation of the translucent mesh facade membrane begins at Cape Town Stadium. Soon the stadium will glow at night”. Well I for one can’t wait and judging by the sheer number of photographs of the Stadium uploaded to Flickr.com by photographers from all over the world (but mostly Capetonians) chronicalling its progress, neither can the rest of Cape Town! So where are we now?

Photograph of Green Point Stadium taken on 9 September 2009 by Blyzz.

Looking Spectacular! Our thanks to this talented photographer for making his photographs available for download under a creative commons license so that we could share them with our readers. Please visit his photostream at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/blyzz/. There are many, many beautiful photographs taken in and around Cape Town. We love his work!

Photographs of Cape Agulhas, the geographic southern tip of the African continent, and the official point at which the cold Benguela current of the Atlantic Ocean and the strong Aghulhas current of the Indian Ocean meet. Historically, the cape has been known to sailors as particularly hazardous, notorious for winter storms and huge rogue waves that can reach a spectacular height of 30 metres, so it’s no surprise that the coast is littered with wrecks or that the large red and white striped lighthouse was built as early as 1848.To find out more about this area visit Cape Agulhas.

‘Any Person caught rolling down the cliff will be prosecuted – by order Lighthouse Engineer’ – So read the original sign nailed to the wooden boundary gate of the Cape Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse at Cape Point is the most powerful on the South African coast. It has a range of 63 kilometres, and beams out a group of three flashes of 10 million candlepower each, every 30 seconds …

A visit to Cape Town is not complete without a visit to Cape Point. Fortunately today the signs are a lot more hospitable and a visit to Cape Point is highly rewarding for the sheer magnificence of the views and the photographic opportunities – a “must-do” for all visitors to Cape Town. To tempt you, click on the thumbnails below to view our gallery of the Cape Point Lighthouse – taken at different time periods and from different angles and viewpoints.
