Ruan SmitOn Saturday 13th Ruan Smit began his cycle journey around South Africa. We’ve had a short update from Ruan about his first 2 days. Starting off in Limpopo, on Saturday he was in Bela Bela, on Sunday he was in Polokwane. He’s made new friends along the way, stayed with welcoming families, been shown around Polokwane (the capital of Limpopo) and been takento see the all-new Peter Mokaba Stadium. Here’s what Ruan had to say in his mail to us last night:

Obviously when you set out to do something you have a certain idea of how it will pan out. Well, I had such a vision. And believe me within hours I was staring at a whole different picture, and honestly, I like this one better.

Saturday must have been the hottest day of the year. At one point the thermometer reached a blistering 40 degree celsius and believe me, 6 hours in this heat whilst cycling gives you a new idea on heat, road and people …

The people I’ve met in the last two days have been truly South African. I’ve been offered a cold beer on the hottest day with a smile and great company. I’ve been accepted into two new families. And I’ve been able to view South Africa at 25km/h for two days. Some of it’s been tough, but absolutely worth it. Definitely worth the 2 months of this tour… even more”.

Watch this space as Ruan keeps us updated about his progress!

If you’d like to host Ruan or just say hi to him whilst he is in your city, contact him on 083 336-2383! (we gather he loves a cold beer!). If you’re a cyclist, join him on the road for a few kilometres – we’re sure he’ll enjoy the company.

On the road ...
