If you are lost for something to do over the Heritage Day long weekend why not book last minute accommodation in the Eastern Cape town of Nieu-Bethesda and attend the Fugard Festival? Athol Fugard was born in 1932 in the town of Middelburg and went on to become South Africa’s most important playwright and certainly the first to gain an international reputation, and is now renowned as one of the worlds greatest playwrights.
The 2010 ABSA Fugard Festival will keep you entertained with a number of plays (including four Fugard plays). The festival is the only place in the world where you will be able to see so many Fugard plays in one festival – right here in the Eastern Cape! Apart from the Fugard plays there is also the locally produced Hotel Paradiso …
The Fugard plays comprise the following:
‘People are Living There’ (produced by Anex Theatre Productions), ‘Playland’, ‘Victoria’ (proudly presented by the Stellenbosch University Drama Department) – this is the first Afrikaans production of Victory and is translated by Idil Sheard of Nieu-Bethesda. ‘Master Harold and the Boys’ is presented by the Rother-Swain Studio and directed by Sharon Rother.
If music is more your scene then do not despair; there’s a lot on the agenda for you too. Seven performances from the internationally acclaimed pianist Christopher Culpo to Lize Beekman, Anton Goosen and our won Karien Vandoolaghe will ensure you get your moneys worth!
The festival programme is varied with a lot happening over the scheduled three days. Proceedings commence at 2pm on Thursday, September 23rd and the festival will close at 12.30 on Sunday, September 26th. Friday and Saturday are crammed full with entertainment starting at 8am and ending at 10pm ‘Pub Jol’ at the The Pub on both days.
Nieu Bethesda is known for many things but the most outstanding is the Owl House of Helen Martins made known to the world by Athol Fugard with his play “The Road to Mecca”. The Owl House is a fascinating place to visit so a trip to Nieu-Bethesda on the Heritage Day weekend of all weekends might be ideal!
