Calling All Meat Lovers

Calling All Meat Lovers

A good steak is hard to find, but always worth the effort. It is defined by good quality meat, smoky flame-grilled flavours, a great basting sauce and being cooked exactly the way you like it (as long as it’s not well done, according to many chefs!) In general, a steak in a restaurant is about 300 grams. Many establishments offer a lady’s steak, which is about 200 grams of meat and is often more manageable to those with smaller appetites and children. This is accompanied by vegetables or salad as well as a starch.

Port Elizabeth has loads of dining options, ranging from take-aways and home-made meals to 5-star cuisine and silver service. For the best steaks in PE / Port Elizabeth, try the following restaurants:

De Kelder (39 Marine Drive)

Juicy Tender Steak

Juicy Tender Steak

Acclaimed as one of the finest restaurants in Nelson Mandela Bay, De Kelder certainly does not disappoint when it comes to presenting discerning diners with a scrumptious steak. The Chateaubriand is a fillet for at least two to share and has earned De Kelder favour amongst steak enthusiasts for its succulent flavours and first-grade quality. Although De Kelder’s prices are on the high end of the scale, the portion sizes and elegant dining experience is well worth every cent spent.

The Coachman (The Pavilion, Marine Drive)

With gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean, the steaks at the Coachman are made extra special. With more than 10 different steak options (including steak topped with chicken livers or fillet sautéed in brandy with lemon butter garlic sauce), there will be no shortage of selection. In addition, they offer fillet, rump, sirloin and T-bone so that diners can have as much variety as possible. Understanding the way that steak should be enjoyed is the secret to the Coachman’s success.

Mangiamo at Wicker Woods (6th Avenue, Walmer)

Whether you enjoy a tender fillet or the wilder flavours of game meat, Mangiamo at Wicker Woods guarantees top quality meat done to perfection. Their signature game dish is venison (usually kudu) done with a red wine and berry reduction. The Danish Feta Fillet is topped with creamy spinach and Danish feta – a novel approach to preparing delicious beef. The inviting, yet classy atmosphere, combined with excellent service, has been a winning formula for Mangiamo at Wicker Woods for more than 10 years.

For diners with families that want more variety, but do not negotiate on quality steaks, the following are also great options:

• Dagwood’s Grill and Diner (Cape Road)
• Spargo’s (Ring Road, Greenacres)
• El Greco (The Boardwalk)
• Blue Waters (Shark Rock Pier)
