This month there is a flurry of activity – from sporting events, harvest festivals, bridal shows and everything in between. Now is the time to sit down and dust off the old diary and make sure you diarise these important dates.  You don’t want to be left in the dust cloud your friends create when they are off enjoying themselves.

You won’t be able to have any excuses because we are letting you know what is happening where so that you can be there and take part if all of the fun. The organisers work hard to put on these great events and the events need your support to keep happening every year! So what are you waiting for? Go out and enjoy yourself.

Events in Limpopo:

The Limpopo Marula Festival is held from 20-27 February in Phalaborwa at the Impala Park Stadium, Hans Merensky Golf Club and Hlolwa Lodge. There are a host of activities and fun events planned including the Marula Golf Challenge, a half marathon, open air music concert, youth rugby and street soccer as well as a cultural products and tourism career fair. A big hit on the Limpopo calendar is The Polokwane Show and Music Festival – formerly known as the Pietersberg Show and its history dates back to 1968. The event is held from 3-6 March 2011. Dusi Canoe Marathon

Dusi Canoe Marathon

The Midmar Mile in Pietermaritzburg is held on 12-13 February 2011 at the Midmar Dam and is the world’s largest open water swimming event. As the name suggests the swim is approximately one mile, while the distance covered is always a mile depending on rainfall and water conditions you may find yourself sprinting through a muddy shore at the start when water levels are low. From Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 February the Dusi Canoe Marathon takes place on the Msunduzi River starting at Pietermaritzburg and ending in Durban. Come and be a spectator in this exciting event that happens over three days. Cheer the paddlers on to a nail biting finish.

Durban Central is host to the NWJ Bridal Show from 4-6 March 2011. If you are looking for some special addition to your wedding or the perfect wedding dress then you need to get to this show at the Durban Exhibition Centre. You may even be the lucky person who wins a wedding!

Zebra Zamba

Zebra Zamba

This extremely popular route takes place at the Lichtenburg game breeding centre – which makes it quite unique. The Lichtenburg Zebra Zamba and MTB Race kicks up some dust on Saturday 5 March with a 32km and 10km races, a 5km fun run and a 32km MTB. Events in Gauteng:

If you are a bit car enthusiast then you will enjoy the Lovers Rock Annual Vintage and Classic Car Show in Magaliesberg on Sunday 6 February. The gates open at 08h00 and you can spend hours looking at the display of between 150 and 200 of the finest motor cars, the event ends at 18h00 so you have plenty of time. If you’re organised you can bring your own picnic and sit and enjoy the day with your family, there is also a food court available. The Gariep Dam is host to the Quenna Festival on 25 and 26 February 2011. This year the festival will be bigger and better and you can browse through more than 40 handpicked stalls or if you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous you can grab a game of paintball and after you’ve worked up an appetite get a bite to eat from one of the delicious food stalls. Langebaan Downwind Dash on Saturday 12 February is a giant 20km slalom from Langebaan to Saldanha. All windsurfers, kites, catamarans and dinghies are welcome to take part in this fun event. Come and see Cape Town Central become a living work of art from 21-26 February at this years Infecting the City. Music lovers will be glad to hear that the Darling Music Experience is once again taking place from 25-27 February. Your ears will be treated to a variety of classical and contemporary chamber music, choir works and jazz all performed by the festival chamber orchestra, quartet, choir, the West Coast Jazz and others.

The Nederburg Harvest Day take place on Saturday 26 February in Paarl due to the accelerated ripening in the vineyards. Here you will be able to participate in creating some of the winery’s award-winning wines. Begin your day with a glass of sparkling wine and then hand yourself over to the team of harvesting experts who will show you the ropes. Also taking place on Saturday 26 February is the Spier Harvest Festival in Stellenbosch. The day is packed with activities for both adults and children so you will be busy all day long. A highlight on the calendar is the Community Chest Carnival which takes place at Maynardville in Wynberg from 2-5 March 2011. The event dates back to 1951 and what begun as a garden party has evolved into a carnival or food stalls, games, musical entertainment and 7000 volunteers who donate their time to this event. The food is always delicious and there are plenty of stalls to browse through or you can challenge your friends to a ride on the bumper cars.

Events in the Garden Route:

If you would like to be a part of the ultimate ride in Knysna then you need to entre the Garden Route 300 from 25-27 February. This year is the inaugural Cannondale event and your race entry includes all meals (except breakfast) each with a Knysna twist. Surfers Challenge

Surfers Challenge

On Saturday 12 February take part in the Discovery Surfers Challenge. The start of the race is the mouth of the Kwelera River at Yellow Sands which is north of East London. Your first major obstacle is the Gonubie River, you’ll then take a short run on the Gonubie beach for approximately 5km and then it’s back to the beach onto the firmer sand of Bonza Bay Beach for the last stretch – the Nahoon River. This is a competitive event and the cut of time is 2 ½ hours (3 ½ for walkers). Runners / paddlers begin at 14h30 and walkers at 14h40 and the events costs R70 per person.

With a warm up of the surfers challenge you should find the Merrifield Mile in the Wriggleswade Dam in East London a walk in the park. The event is free of charge and it is just as much fun to be a spectator as a participant at this annual event. The swim begins at midday and everyone is encouraged to take part. It seems the Eastern Cape is feeling very energetic this month because the following weekend you can take part in the Old Mutual Buffs Marathon on Stutterheim on Saturday 26 February. This is a point to point race and starts on Stutterheim Road going back towards East London. This is a beautiful race and you’ll enjoy an easy first 10km before the hard work really sets in. If you’re like me and enjoy a bit of chilli then head to the Chilli Festival on 26 and 27 February 2011 at the Parsons Hill Primary School in Port Elizabeth. The event is open from 10h00 to 17h00 and you will find everything chilli here, from plants and trinkets to food and plenty of it with a bit if a kick!
