We are now officially into the second half of 2011, you might be asking yourself where has the time gone? But what you should be asking yourself is what am I going to be doing with the rest of the year? How can I fill up my free time with things to do, what is happening around me? We’re here to make the answers a little bit easier and we’re giving you a snippet of some of the fantastic events that will be taking place this July.

Don’t let this month slip past you, because before you know it we’ll be in 2012. Get rid of some of those winter blues and be a part of the magic that these events offer. You will find something for everyone from sports enthusiasts, art lovers, food lovers, families, friends and more. Don’t get left out in the cold… make sure you are there!

From Friday 8 to Sunday 10 July at the Seaton Delaval Polo Fields in Ballito you can feast on both prawns and fantastic entertainment at the Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival.  Everyone is invited to participate in this fantastic event. Prawns will be the main focus and it doesn’t matter how you like yours (peri-peri, lemon butter, garlic, in a curry or plain) there will be something to tantalise your tastebuds. The Durban International Boat & Leisure Show is a firm favourite on the Durban events calendar and takes place this year from 15-17 July 2011. If you are a boat fanatic you will be thrilled by the spectacular displays from all things that float. A new aspect to the show is the Boat and Classic Car Auction, so come prepared. Port Shepstone on the South Coast is host to the Annual South Coast Lions Show from 15-17 July 2011. This is a trade and industrial show with a difference as the proceeds are put directly into the local community. Expect an arena with plenty of activitiy from police and vehicle displays, talent shows, fun fair rides, live entertainment and more. Head to the Port Shepstone Borough Fields for the action.

The Durban Airshow takes place on Saturday 16 July 2011 in Durban North and will be a full day of delightful air display at the Virginia Airport. The show is open from 10h00 to 16h00 and the entire family will have fun on the day. Telephone +27 (0)31 564-7167 for further details.

If this isn’t already on your calendar, it should be, The Durban International Film Festival will be held from 21-31 July 2011 at various locations around Durban. The 15th SA Women’s Arts Festival begins on 29 July until 14 August 2011 at the Playhouse in Durban. This is a showcase for the impact women make on the lives of South Africans and is a landmark event on the cultural calendar. You can expect a mix of poetry, music, drama and comedy from noteable female performing artists. From 6-9 July the Ellisras Bushveld Festival takes place in Lephalale. This festival will include cattle shows, horse jumping, dog shows, a game auction, competitions, traditional food, a beer tent, a game farms expo and so much more. One of the oldest festivals held in the lowveld region, The Hoedspruit Game Festival will be held from 8-10 July 2011. It was first held in 1987 and has been an annual event ever since. The game auction still occurs but it not on the scale of what it was in previous years. The event is held on the Blyde Wildlife Estate and you can watch planes performing acrobatics, chat to pilots and enjoy aviation related activities. Come and enjoy this event which has such a long history.

Polokwane you are in for a treat this years fifth  Limpopo Wine Show from 29-30 July 2011. Held at the Meropa Casino & Entertainment World and presented by Michael Fridjhon and his team you will enjoy wines from a number of award winning producers. What sounds better than the Vaal River Meander Wine Route? If this sparks your interest you need to know that it will be taking place from 9 July to 14 August 2011 at more than 20 different venues on and around the banks of the Vaal River. Over 50 premier South African wine estates have been selected to showcase their wines. Not only can you enjoy the wines but you will also enjoy a wide variety of entertainment and loads more.

If you’re looking to get in a bit of exercise why not take part in the Aminostim 15km and 5km on Saturday 9 July 2011. Held in the lovely suburb if Irene both routes are moderate to easy and you run through the Agricultural Research Centre where you will see some animals. The first 10 men and women in each distance win gold medals and then next 50 men and women will receive silver medals, all other finishers take home a bronze. The Springbok Vasbyt is organised by the marathon club of the Tshwane University of Technology and starts at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria Accommodation on Saturday 16 July 2011 at 07h30. You can take place in either the 12km or 21km and walkers are also welcome. Find some beautiful antiques and collectibles at the National Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire which will be held from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July 2011 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton. Find anything and everything from books to coins and porcelain figures there will also be a wide range of furniture from the Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau collections. Looking for a laugh then why not book your tickets to the Nando’s JHB Comedy Festival which will be on stage from 22-31 July 2011 at Monte Casino. Laugh out loud to comedians from both South Africa and around the world. There is plenty of comedy to suit all tastes and remember these are popular shows so it is wise to book early. The Inanda Africa Cup will be held on Sunday 31 July 2011 in Inanda and will showcase the skills of some of the best horsemen on the continent. This involves a knockout tournament with teams from Nigeria, Ghana and local teams. The event is open to the public and tickets cost R100 per car and can be purchased at the gate on the day. Danscape 2011

Danscape 2011

Come and watch some of South Africa’s talented young dancers as they leap onto the Artscape Stage in the Foreshore from 7-10 July 2011 for the annual Danscape 2011. Some of the city’s top schools and companies including Dance For All, the Cape Academy of Performing Arts, iKapa Dance Theatre, the Vadhini Indian Arts Academy and more, will be showcased – you are in for a treat. Tickets are R65 per person and can be bought via Computicket or directly from the box office.

Fees van die Ganse takes place from 8-10 July in Gansbaai. This festival which attracts more than 10 000 visitors celebrates the origins of Gansbaai and remembers the wild geese (ganse) that flocked to the freshwater spring located in the harbour. Enjoy live music, a procession on Saturday morning, boat trips, competitions, food stalls and more. There is even a Fynbos wildflower show. The 4 day Berg River Canoe Marathon takes place from 12-16 July 2011 and starts in Paarl and paddles into Velddrif. The race covers a distance of 250km so you’d better be up for the challenge. This challenge has been happening since 1961 and is a tough challenge especially because the winter weather can also prove to be a strong competitor.

If you’re looking to escape to France why not stop by Franschhoek on Saturday 16 or Sunday 17 July as they will be holding the annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival. Celebrate the old French Huguenot heritage with fantastic food, wine and entertainment. There is plenty to see and do for the entire family and you can feast of special menus created exclusively for the festival. With lots to see, do and enjoy for the whole family, make a memorable weekend of your visit and take advantage of the special Bastille packages offered by a plethora of hotels and guest houses, many of which include a complimentary bottle of Franschhoek wine. C’est la vie!

Various wineries in the Breedekloof region will be hosts to the Breedekloof Soetes & Soup which will take place this year on 22 and 23 July 2011. Come and fill your bellies with hearty homemade soups, juicy red wine, Muscadel and Port. There are a variety of live performances on Saturday and tickets for this cost R150 per person. Don’t forget you can buy your own enamel mug for R10 at the first winery and this will be filled with complimentary cups of soup. If you’re looking to get off the beaten track then why not enter into the two day trail run experience of the Grootvadersbosch Trail Run in Swellendam on 23 and 24 July 2011. Run though a varied terrain with 95% of the track being a single track. Your views will range from indigenous forests, endemic fynbos and river valleys. However if bikes are more your thing then gear up for Die Burger Mountain Bike Challenge on Saturday 30 July 2011 in Stellenbosch.  This is a challenging and pretty route that passes through more than 20 wine farms. There is a 15km, 30km, 42km as well as a 60km race so every fitness level is catered for. Entries close on 18 July 2011 or when the 3500 entry limit is reached. The Wedge Classic is South Africa’s biggest body boarding competition and will be held from 10-16 July 2011 in Plettenberg Bay. This is the final event before the SA Champs and is certainly not to be missed. The event has a 5A rating and with more than 150 entrants you will see some of South Africa’s best in the water. There is a vibrant Rastafarian community in Knysna and you’re invited to join in to the Rastafarian Earth Festival from 22 July to 1 August 2011 at Judah Square. You will find visitors from all walks of life during this colourful festival as they celebrate their way of life. If you don’t know much about this often misunderstood faith now is your chance to learn.

The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay is such a highlight on the events calendar. This year it takes place from 14-24 Jul 2011. Come and watch the world’s top 32 ranked surfers as they surf the only African stop on the ASP World Tour. Cheer on the local talent of Jordy Smith as he takes on other champions such as Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow. Enjoy some time on the beach and watch some fantastic surf. Don’t forget about the Billabong Pro Music Festival 2011 from 15-17 July 2011 at the Jolly Dolphin, Jeffreys Bay.

Those of you who enjoy a piece of biltong will certainly be looking forward to the annual Eastern Cape Biltong Festival which takes place in Somerset East at the Show Grounds on 15 and 16 July 2011. Celebrate Karoo food and this local way of life. There is plenty of entertainment for the kids as well so this is certainly a family event. Wet 'n Wild Festival

Wet ‘n Wild Festival

Running of the Bullshitters 7km is more of a pub crawl than a race, but it is taken just as seriously. Held on Saturday 23 July 2011 at Tippers Creek, Bluewater Bay, Port Elizabeth. The race takes a circular route and at each stop participants need to have a drink before carrying on. The event ends in a braai and a bit of a party. The Wild Coast Wet ‘n Wild Festival will be held on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July in Cintsa and it is an opportunity for you to join in all of the fun on this weekend. There are bike races, fun runs, inflatable boat races and so much more. With a variety of stalls at the Jikeleza Country Fair you will find some fantastic things to buy and take home with you.

SA Game Fair

The Jock Cycle Classic takes place in Barberton on Sunday 24 July 2011 It is one of the oldest and biggest cycle races in the country (it started in the early 1980’s). On Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July stop over at the South African Game Fair in Dullstroom at the Dullstroom Bird of Prey Centre. You will be able to visit the Raptor Rehabilitation Centre and watch hands on demonstrations. On a different field you can watch various dog displays and a safe distance away there will be clay pigeon shooting, bow hunting and other demonstrations.

Endurance Ride

Endurance Ride

The Fauresmith Endurance Ride takes place from 5-7 July 2011 in Fauresmith, Xhariep. If you are an experienced rider then you will certainly enjoy this event. This endurance race covers a rough terrain of 205km and spans over three consecutive days and nights. The race attracts more than 300 participants. Speedo Ice Swim Africa

One of the coldest swims in Africa takes place on Saturday 23 July 2001 in Fraserburg which is near Sutherland. Six cold water veterans and a number of other extreme swimmers will brave the icy dam water in mid winter for the Speedo Ice Swim Africa. Wearing only Speedo costumes, swimming caps and goggles these swimmer will attempt to swim one mile in water that will more than likely be below 5 degrees Celsius. There are also shorter endurance swims which you can take part in of only 600m. Fraserburg is a five hour drive from Cape Town and is one of the most authentic, well preserved and coldest towns in the Karoo.
