Events in June – don’t give in to the winter blues

We are heading into the middle of 2011 already and this time last year we were gearing up for the 2010 World Cup but don’t worry if you’re missing that world cup fever – there is still ample fun to be had. This June South Africa is crammed full of exciting annual events and festivals. You will be struggling to fit everything into your diary.

Don’t let the winter weather give you the blues get out and about and have a little bit of fun. Spend some time with your family and friends and do something a little bit different. This may even give you some ideas of what to do during the  upcoming mid year school holidays – use these events to plan a trip? But whatever the case with so much to offer you are spoilt for choice this June…

Freedom Challenge

The  K&K Pietermaritzburg Winterfest takes place on 11 and 12 June 201 in Pietermaritzburg and this is the first year the event will be taking place. This year the Freedom Challenge begins on 11 June and is a race for those who are fit and healthy as it is 2300km bike race which takes riders through the Drakensburg and all the way through the Great Karoo into the Cape where the race ends on 16 July at the Diemersfontein Wine Estate in Wellington. If you would like to see the “Greatest Shoal on Earth” then you need to make sure you visit Durban between 11 June and 23 July 2011 for the annual Sardine Run. This is the annual migration of millions of sardines and is something truely magnificent.

Ladie’s if you are looking to get fit then why not take part in the  Spar Women’s 10km and 5km Challenge on Sunday 19 June 2011 on the Durban Beachfront. This year marks the 22nd event and all ladies 15 years and older are encouraged to take part in the 10km race. The event begins at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

From 24 June to 3 July 2011 you can visit the East Coast Radio House & Garden Show at the Durban Exhibition Centre, Durban. If you’re looking for the the latest in home and lifestyle products then you needn’t look any further. The show is open from Monday to Thursday from 10h00 to 21h00, Fridays and Saturdays from 10h00 to 22h00 and Sundays from 1h00 to 20h00. Held annual the Naboom Windpomp Fees takes place from 16-18 June 2011 in Naboomspruit at the Buffelshoek Agri Depo. You might be wondering where the festival gets its interesting name from – windpomp is the Afrikaans word which means windmill and the Euphorbia Christelike Onafhanklike Skool who hosts the event produces water for itself which will in turn flow into the community. As visitors to this three day event you can expect concerts and entertainment of a high standard as well as fun for the entire family.  Tickets cost R60 per person for a day pass or R150 for a three day pass. If you’re wanting to see something a little bit different then book your seat at the Encounters International Documentary Festival from 9-26 June 2011  at the Nu Metro, V&A Waterfront and The Classic On Broadway, Long Street. This is the only film festival that is devoted to documentaries.

The Cape Town Marimba Festival takes place on Saturday 11 June at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch and will showcase the energy of the African Marimba. Come and be a part of what promises to be the biggest Napier Patat Festival from 17-19 June 2011 in Napier. The event kicks off with a live performance from Christo & Kobus or take part in the half marathon, fun run or mountain bike race. Christmas comes a little bit early in the lovely town of Tulbagh. Join them for the annual Christmas in Winter on 25 and 26 June 2011. The Baxter Dance Festival be gracing the stage from 27 June to 2 July 2011 at the Baxter Theatre. This annual event has been up and running since 2005 and allows both established and emerging dance companies and choreographers the chance to present their work. If you or anyone you know is interested in quilt making then you need to ensure you are at the South African National Quilt Festival from 1-7 July 2011. This is the annual event held by the Good Hope Quilters’ Guild in Stellenbosch. Here you will find workshops and demostrations which will interest quilters of all varieties. Events in the Garden Route:

Knysna Oyster Festival

Knysna Oyster Festival

You will probably need to plan ahead for next years event already, but if you are anywhere near Knysna you must make a plan to visit the Knysna Oyster Festival from Friday 1 July to Sunday 10 July 2011. This is quite possibly one of the most popular events in the country and brings in thousands of visitors annually to feast of delicious oysters and take part in the various events within the festival. This year the  Knysna Cycle Tour (take part int either  the full 85km race, the 42km half or the 15km fun ride) on 2 July, while the hugely popular Knysna Forest Marathon, you’ll need to book early for both the 42.2km full or the 21.1 half marathon, which takes place on 9 July. Whatever you do make sure you visit at least one of the 30 local Tabasco Hotspots throughout the festival to try out the oysters.

Royal McNab

Royal McNab

The Wine Road Show takes place in Port Elizabeth from 10-12 June 2011 and promises to be a three-day wine extravaganza! The exhibitors are limited to 50 award winning estates and will showcase their latest vintages. There will be a dedicated outdoor eating area where you can fill you bellies with some delicious food. Tickets are available from Computicket for R90 per person or R150 for a weekend pass.

From 16-19 June you can take part in the Royal McNab at the Mountain View Country Inn in Lady Grey. Hunters from all over the country come to take part in this event. The main event begins at 06h00 on Saturday morning and you’ll need to catch a trout, shoot both a Mountain Reedbuck and Greywing Francolin within the 12 hours alloted to the event. Wordfest is a multilingual festival of languages and literature with a developmental emphasis which takes place in Grahamstown from 20-23 June 2011.

The Grahamstown National Arts Festival is a highlight on the Eastern Cape calendar and takes place from 30 June to 9 July 2011. This is a colourful and cultural event which offers the best in both local and overseas talent. Thousands of visitors flock to Grahamstown each year to be a part of the fun. You will find anything and everything here, from theatre to comedy, food stalls and beer tents,  arts and craft stalls and so much more.

The Komatipoort Prawn Festival takes place in Komatipoort from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 June 2011 and will be a day of fun and entertainment for every member of the family. There is a wide variety of entertainment that will take place on a large outdoor stage, plenty of stalls to browse through, a beer tent, a fun fair and so much more. You will find the festival at the Komatipoort Sports Grounds.

From Wednesday 29 June to Saturday 2 July 2011 join in the fun at the InniBos Kunstefees which is an arts festival including music, cabaret, children’s theatre, literature, theatre and the visual arts with more than 200 performers.
