March sees us to the end of the first quarter of 2011 and it has not slowed down, throughout South Africa you can take part in and attend a variety of events and activities to keep you entertained throughout the month.

Monday 21 March is also a public holiday as we celebrate Human Rights Day. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) was formed on this day in 1996, 35 years after the devastating events in Sharpeville when demonstrators were gunned down by police. The SAHRC promotes respect for human rights, monitors and assess the observance of human rights in our country as well many other things and this day commemorates this special day in our history.

Events in Limpopo:

The Ebenezer Mile Open Swim takes place at the Ebenezer Dam in Magoebaskloof on Sunday 20 March 2011 and is hosted annually by the Mountain Yacht Club and incorporates the SA “B” national qualifier 3000m. For more information you can telephone Adi Rech on +27 (0)73 086-8805.

A second big swimming event takes place in Limpopo on Sunday 27 March in Bela Bela, the Pick ‘n Pay Bosveld Mile will be held for the 13th time this year. The first swim saw only 20 swimmers participating and this event grown in popularity. The water is clean and clear and there are 3 different age categories for swimmers as well as a 200m swim for children under 9 years. Every participant gets a medal and this is always a great motivation!

Why not come and celebrate something everyone loves to eat – the Kiwi Festival takes place from 2-3 April 2011 in Haenertsburg. Enjoy this fruit that has been described to taste like succulent green sherbet. There will be plenty of entertainment, kiwi farm tours, informative talks and much more. Ramfest Johannesburg takes place on 12 March 2011 in Emmarentia at the Emmerentia Dam. Come and join in the celebration with some of South Africa’s top rock talent. From Sunday 13 to Wednesday 16 March the Sandton Convention Centre in Sandton is holding Hostex 2011. This is the place to be if you are in the tourism and hospitality industry. Cullinan is host to the Groot Gat Fees from 18 to 21 March. This unique town was the site of discovery of the world’s largest diamond in 1905. You can come and enjoy various events and activities during this festival and discover just what makes this town so interesting.



The AdExpo from 23 to 25 March 2011 at the Sandton Convention Centre is a platform for marketers, advertisers and media buyers to get together and plan for the year ahead. There are interesting short workshops and a variety of exhibits. Head down to Stonehaven on Vaal in Vanderbijlpark on 26 March for the annual Rotary River Festival which is a guaranteed day of fun in the sun with tons of entertainment continuing well into the night. There are three top SA artists this year who will all perform, Watershed, Ray Dylan and Robbie Wessels. Everyone in your family is welcome and they will find something to keep the busy. If you are looking for a great family day out then head to Inanda for the Inanda Club Family Fun Day on Sunday 27 March. Come along anytime from 10h00 until 16h00 and watch some of the fabulous entertainment which includes skydivers and demonstrations or you can have a pony ride, your face painted or bounce for a while on a trampoline. Don’t forget your picnic and sunscreen and enjoy the day!

Moms and mom’s to be should make their way to the 5th Living and Loving Kids and Baby Expo at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park from 31 March to 3 April 2011. Round the Rock

OmmiBerg Round the Rock takes place in Paarl on Saturday 12 March. Come along and enjoy the Paarl wine route with bubbly on arrival and a variety of tastings throughout the day. Pick some grapes from the vineyards and familiarise yourself with the wide variety of grapes that make the wine you enjoy drinking. It is too late to get your entry for this year’s Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour on Sunday 13 March but the 35 000+ cyclists who are taking part will need your support and encouragement on the day. So come out and support them with cheers at various points along this 109km cycle race that is both challenging and beautiful. The Lamberts Bay Crayfish and Cultural Festival from Friday 18 to Wednesday 23 March takes place in the lovely Cape West Coast town of Lamberts Bay. It is harvest time in the Cape and the Wellington Harvest Festival in Wellington from 19-21 March gives you the opportunity to experience just what the harvest is all about. A favourite on the music calendar in the Mother City is the Cape Town Jazz Festival on 25 and 26 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. Some of the world’s most renowned jazz musicians will provide you with musical enjoyment. Tickets are available from Computicket.

The West Coast Lagoon Festival in Langebaan takes place on the weekend of 25-27 March at Club Mykonos. The event is jam packed with lagoon sports, music events and even and air show. With lots of children’s entertainment your young ones will be entertained and you will have lots of food and drink available at the various stalls.

Two of our favourite pastimes are music and beer and the Brews & Blues Festival at D’Aria in Durbanville brings these together. Enjoy and taste beers from both local and international brewers and while you’re sitting and relaxing you can be entertained by 5 of South Africa’s biggest blues bands. Kingfisher MTB Enduro

Kingfisher MTB Enduro

The Kingfisher MTB Enduro Race takes place in the quiet village of Hoekwil which is just above Wilderness. Each year it is flooded with mountain bike enthusiasts and this year it is no different. Come and be a part of the adventure on Saturday 26 March. The event is organised by the Hoekwil Primary School and is part of the South Cape Enduro Series. The route takes you through farmlands and the Bergplaas State Forest which is usually inaccessible for riders. Young riders can take part in the 3km race, but there are also 20km, 40km and 70km races to challenge all fitness levels. The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) takes place in Oudtshoorn from 2 to 9 April and is an ever increasingly popular event.  The programme line up is always first class and you will be able to see a huge variety of talent and productions performed throughout the festival. You might not be able to find accommodation in the town itself so either book your place for next year or if you’re in the surrounding area make a day of it!

This is a 4 ring Championship Cat Show. The breeds are Sphynx, Devon Rex, Ragdoll, Siamese, Tonkinese, Maine Coon, Persian, Exotic, Oriental, Turkish Van, Bengal, Burmese, British Shorthair and Domestic cats. The Eastern Cape Highland Gathering on Sunday 20 March takes place in Port Elizabeth and is a celebration of everything Scottish including bagpipes, tossing the caber and of course whisky. This is also a competition for pipers, drummers and dancers who come from all around the country. Grahamstown is host to SciFest Africa from 23 to 29 March 2011. This is the national science festival and includes more than 600 events such as popular lectures, exhibitions and workshops, field trips, laser shows and more.

Events in the North West Province:

'Om Die Dam'

‘Om Die Dam’

In 1991 there were only 1950 athletes taking part in the ‘Om Die Dam’ Ultra Marathon and now 20 years later this is a thriving and extremely popular race taking place in Hartbeespoort Dam on 19 March. The route is circular, challenging and beautiful with a steep climb at the 38km mark over Saartjiesnek.

Brightly Coloured Sight in Potchefstroom takes place from 22 March until 15 April and is an art project to raise money for the Guide Dog Association for the Blind. All paintings sold and monies raised will be donated to this association. A number of local artists have donated their work so this is certainly a worthwhile cause to come and support. Come to the Main Museum, 42 Sol Plaatjies Street to be a part of this.

Events in the Free State:

The Pentagon Pistols 32km takes place in Bloemfontein on Saturday 16 March and is organised by the Pentagon Pistols. If you are running the Comrades Marathon this is a good weekend training run two months before the big race.
