If you are only just recovering from all the public holidays and excitement of April but you’re already itching to get out and about this May then look no further as we have some wonderful suggestions of annual events and festivals taking place all over South Africa. Perhaps this is the time to start getting fit again before winter really sets in, so take part in any number of the sporting events offered. Events in Limpopo:
An event that the entire family can enjoy is the Mabalingwe Lion Man Mountain Bike Race on Saturday 14 May 2011. It takes place in the Mabalingwe Game Reserve, Bela Bela, and you will ride through the hills of this Big 5 reserve. Events in the North West Province:
Are you a collector of sorts? If so you will more than likely be delighted to hear that the Oppiewerf Arts & Antiques Fair is back once again on Saturday 28 May 2011 at the President Pretorius Museum in Potchefstroom. You will find various collector’s items and paintings for sale or you can work your way through all of the food stalls which offer tasty treats. From Friday 27 May to Sunday 5 June 2011 the ever popular Rustenburg Show takes place in Rustenburg. Events in the Western Cape:
An anticipated event for many book clubs is the Franschhoek Literary Festival which takes place this year from 13-15 May 2011, the gorgeous Cape Winelands Town, Franschhoek. For three days this town is transformed into a get-together for readers, writers, booksellers and publishers. The line-up changes each year and often includes popular authors who will be involved in discussions and debates. It’s not an all book event you can also enjoy music and food and of course a glass or two of wine. The annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival will once again take to the Baxter Theatre stage in Rondebosch from 19-21 May 2011. This festival gives young musicians the chance to perform and showcase their talents. Enjoy music from the jazz bands of various Cape Town schools as well as the UCT Big Band. Joubert-Tradauw Unplugged62 is an unplugged music event which takes place in Barrydale from 20-21 May 2011. Come and listen to the best of South African music unplugged where this acoustic style allows the artists to connect with the audience in an intimate way. If you want to take a break and get some fresh air then take part in the mountain bike race which offers three distances for all fitness levels
Enjoy delicious food and drink at the Good Food & Wine Show Cape Town at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in the Foreshore from 26-29 May 2011. A highlight on the Robertson calendar is the Wacky Wine Weekend from 2-5 June 2011. Join thousands of wine enthusiasts at this festival which showcases the regions wine as well as offering activities to keep you busy. Enjoy the Greyton Genadendal Classics for All from 3-5 June 2011 with eight concerts performed in the historic churches of Greyton and Genadendal and similar venues. However the highlight of this year’s festival is the performance of Mozart’s Requiem. If you are looking for a 10km race with an easy start and circular route then why not entre the Sunridge Park Shopping Complex 10km on Saturday 14 May 2011 in Port Elizabeth? The first 10 race finishers will take gold medals home with them, the following 100 runners taking home silvers and all finishers in both the 10km and 5km bronze medals. On Saturday 14 May 2011 in Bergville you can take part in the Royal Drakensberg MTB Challenge which as various options for all fitness levels. If you are a beginner why not entre the 10km race which begins at 10h00 or if you feel you could manage a 20km which begins at 09h45. For those of you who are very fit try out the 40km race which begins at 09h30 or if you’re not into cycling then enter either the 15km race beginning at 08h30 or the 15km night run which begins at 18h00. The African Renaissance Festival takes place from 23-27 May 2011 and celebrates its 13th year at various locations around KwaZulu Natal. The main two day conference on 24 and 25 May includes a line-up of distinguished speakers and personalities, on 23 May there will be a Youth Pioneers Conference and a Unity of Faith seminar on 26 May 2011. Those who are taking part in the very challenging 89km Comrades Marathon on Sunday 29 May 2011 must not forget to stop by the Bonitas Comrades Expo which is held from 26-28 May 2011 at the Durban Exhibition Centre, Durban. Find sports goods from all sporting disciplines. The exhibition is open from 09h00 to 19h00 on Thursday and Friday and from 09h00 to 17h00 on Saturday.
The Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg is one of the most popular events in KwaZulu Natal and takes place this year from 27 May to 5 June 2011. Browse through hundreds of arts and crafts stalls, visit any number of the competitions for birds, agricultural produce and livestock or simply enjoy the activities on the day – from concerts and vintage tractor displays to jumping castles and fireworks. Events in Gauteng:
If you have a Koi pond you will know about these beautiful fish. Perhaps you are new to it all and need to find out more information, if this is the case then make sure you don’t miss the SAKKS National Koi Show from 13-15 May 2011 at the Cresta Shopping Centre, in Cresta. Here you will see some of South Africa’s finest Koi. Entry is R20 for adults and R10 for pensioners and children under 12 years.

The Sandton Sun is Sandton will host the Fine Brandy Festival from 25-27 May 2011 (25 May is by initiation only). This is the second year the event has taken place and it will once again showcase both large and small single-estate brandy makers. You will be able to watch live demonstrations and tantalise your taste buds with wonderful food pairing and adventurous cocktails. The second largest oyster festival in South Africa will be held in Randburg on 28 and 29 May 2011 and you will be able to indulge on a variety of oyster dishes at The Oyster, Wine & Food Festival at the Brightwater Commons. From Friday 27 to Sunday 29 May 2011 the Uplands Festival in White River will once again entertain crowds. You must not forget to stop off at the art exhibition which is growing to be one of the largest in the lowveld.
