Events in November – it’s all about the outdoors and Christmas
I’m not sure if you’re feeling it yet, but it seems that summer is here for some of the country and just about here in other parts. Summer brings with it holidays, time on the beach, special moments with your family and generally a great time.
This November the events taking place all around the country will not disappoint. Those who are looking for ways to keep fit or get fit in time for summer then be prepared as there are a host of sporting activities to keep you active all around South Africa. So dust off those running shoes, shake out that towel and get yourself ready!
Events in Gauteng:
On Saturday 7 November 2010 why not partake in the standard 42.2km Soweto Marathon or if you’re not sure your fitness levels are up there you can take part in either the 20km walk, 10km race or 5km fun run. While running this race you will take in a bit of history as you run past the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and a number of others. This Cape Town event takes place the week earlier, but the FNB Whisky Live Festival in Sandton from 10-12 November will be a tasting sensation for whisky lovers. If you’re looking to get into the Christmas spirit then book your tickets for the Singing Christmas Tree presented by the University of Pretoria Jakaranda Children’s Choir. Approximately 3800 children from Pretoria Accommodation and surrounding areas take part in this event to put on a concert to be remembered. The concert is at the South African State Theatre and tickets are available from Computicket.
If you enjoy triathlons then you should get yourself ready for the next instalment of the BSG Energade Triathlon Series in Vanderbijlpark on Sunday 14 November. The race includes a 600m swim, 20km cycle and a 5km run. If you’ve got children who are keen athletes then they can partake in the kiddies races which are shorter than the senior division. Something on the highlight of the Johannesburg sporting calendar is the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge, this year it pedals off on Sunday 21 November. Something a little bit different is the Faerie Realm Midsummer Festival of Enchantment from 26-28 November at the Riversands Farm, Fourways. The Festival will showcase crafts vendors, (mostly featuring handmade art inspired by the Realms of Fantasy & Enchantment), performances by from a folk, fantasy, electro, Celtic and tribal musicians, fire dancers, stiltwalkers, drummers and so many more. It’s time to put on your most comfortable pair of heels on Saturday 27 November for the Sisters With Blisters event in Bryanston. A Christmas Concert With A Difference is the Black Tie Ensemble’s annual Christmas concert which is on stage in Muckleneuk, Pretoria on Sunday 5 December 2010. Events in the North West Province:
On Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 December the Nedbank Golf Challenge takes place at Sun City. This tournament delights spectators are a number of world class golfers battle it out at the Gary Player Country Club. In the Free State:
The annual Cherry Festival in Ficksburg from 18-20 November is a highlight on the Free State calendar. Ficksburg is known as the Cherry Town and the festival includes cherry tours, a golf classic, cherry product competitions and more. Come and taste some delicious treats, watch how cherry mampoer is made or just come and enjoy the festival.
On Saturday 27 November, in Theunissen, Motheo Region, the Erfenis Dam Mile takes to the water. This is a Midmar Mile qualifying event. Races on the day include a full standard x-terra, team triathlon, mountain bike races, off road run and swims. There is something to for every sporting enthusiast and all fitness levels. Events in Mpumalanga:
Have you heard of the town Roossenekal, in Mpumalanga? Probably not, but what you are more than likely unaware of is that this is the natural habitat of the much sought after Yellow Arum Lily (Zantedeschia pentlandia). On 26 and 27 November the annual Yellow Arum Lily Festival takes place and it is a celebration of this flower. This is a protected species that is on the endangered Red Data list, so remember even though they are very beautiful you are not allowed to pick them or dig them up in the veld. The Alfred Dunhill Championship from 7-10 December 2010 tees off at the Leopard Creek Golf Club in Malelane. With prize money of more than £1,000,000 there’s a lot to play for. Celebrating its 11th anniversary this year the Magoebaskloof Mountain Bike Classic takes place on Saturday 6 November in Magoebaskloof. The City Impact Youth Arts Festival on Thursday 25 November to Friday 10 December in Polokwane is in support of the 16 days of Activism, world HIV / Aids Day and international day for disabled persons. The Global Diabetes Run / Walk on Saturday 6 November, in Green Point is not only a sporting event it will help to create awareness about the need for worldwide action. In South Africa it is approximated that 1 in 5 people over the age of 35 years have type 2 diabetes and more than half of them are not aware of this. On the day there will be stands where you can have you blood pressure and glucose checked. So come and take part in either the 5km or 10km walk / run. Staying with flowers the Daddy Bloom Flower Show is something a little bit different. This one of a kind flower show takes place on a roof top at the Grand Daddy’s Airstream Trailer Park from 10-14 November. Besides the flower show being in the CBD on a rooftop the exhibition is a series of mini-‘art gardens’ which have been created from all kinds of material, from glass to Perspex, felt and paint. If you have a cycling buddy and you’d like to take part in a two day challenge over a distance of approximately 230km then the Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race from 12-14 November 2010 is your answer. This November the Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts kick off, they run every Sunday from 21 November 2010 to 3 April 2011 and you will be able to watch some of your favourite South African artists perform in this unique and beautiful setting of the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens open-air amphitheatre. Some of the performers for this year include Just Jinger, KZee with Khuli Chana, Mango Groove, Freshlyground, Civil Twilight and many more.
The annual Harfield Village Carnival in the Southern Suburbs takes place on Saturday 27 November and once again 2nd Avenue in Harfield Village will come alive to the beat of music, plenty of stalls and restaurants offering you delicious food. The street is closed off and turns into quite a party when the sun goes down, so come and enjoy the vibe.
On Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November the CANSA Relay For Life Mitchell’s Plain takes place. This events aims to unite communities in the Cape Metro in the fight against cancer. The event takes place over night and is a 12 hour relay in which teams of 10-15 persons relay with the goal of keeping one person on the track at all times. The Cape Town part of the BSG Energade Triathlon Series on Sunday 5 December draws this series to a close. Various events took place around the country, including Potchefstroom, Roodeplaat, Germiston, Vanderbijlpark, Midmar. This is a premier pro-celebrity charity golf event lets players come and test their skills on the challenging and demanding Links course. A firm favourite of the sporting calendar is the Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens at Greenacres, Port Elizabeth taking from on 3 and 4 December. Sixteen teams take to the fields to battle it out.
