Joburg Theatre line-up

Send to Kindle

This year the line up at the Joburg Theatre is certainly something, it is going to provide entertainment from every angle and will get even the most timid of theatre goers excited. This is just a taste of what you get to look forward to in the beginning of this year …

This is it

Currently on stage and running until 13 February is History – This Is It, the story of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. It is a tribute to this musical phenomenon and Kenny Wizz (the world’s most highly acclaimed Jackson impersonator) will rock the stage along with a fabulous international touring company including dancers, musicians and authentic costumes. If you’re a fan this will recreate a Jackson concert, with every song sung a hit and every note electrifying.

From 5-12 February matinee performances of Hannah & Miley: The Best of Both Girls Show takes to the stage. This show is back due to popular demand, so don’t sit back and wait make sure you get your tickets soon. Performed by New Zealand born Clasina this is a tribute to the Disney character Hannah Montana. Your children will be enthralled – and it is more than likely that you will be too.

Spirit Productions bring us Strictly Tap Dance Fever from 15 February to 6 March. This is a non-stop tap spectacular that will leave you amazed with some of the greatest tap moves as well as special guest stars. Come and watch this energetic performance.

Tina Turner fans can come and watch Rebecca O’Connor in Simply the Best from 10-20 March. O’Connor is the winner of the 2002 European Stars In Their Eyes impersonation competition. Simply the Best is a tribute show and she performs some of Turners classics with a full live band.

Hannah & MileySomething I am very much looking forward to is George Bizet’s Carmen from 1-10 April 2011. I know that opera isn’t for everyone, but the music in this one is just so moving and fantastic I’m not sure how anyone can turn away from the story of this alluring gypsy. The cast will be both international and South African and will be accompanied by the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

If you’re looking to laugh then Australian comedian Jim Jefferies have you rolling in the aisles from 7-9 April in Alcoholocaust. He is opinionated and you might not agree with everything he says, but no one said being a comedian was easy.

Swiss theatre troupe Mummeschanz performs from 12-17 April. You may remember them from their trip to South Africa in 2008 where they performed to sold out crowds. This troupe are the masters of illusions and they create costumes out of everyday objects, you will be mesmerised and entertained throughout the performance.

The Sopranos – Live in Concert (19 April to 1 May) is a musical spectacular from eight sopranos. They will entertain you with a range of styles including popular Broadway numbers, contemporary rock as well as timeless classics.

Other performances to look forward to are dance productions including Romeo and Juliet, performed by the South African Ballet Theatre from 27 May to 19 June. Musical productions and so much more. Don’t forget the next Janice Honeymoon pantomime at the end of the year, this year Cinderella is the story and you know you will have a fabulous time.

Don’t sit back this year, make sure you get out and watch these productions – the casts have been working hard to bring you the best performances possible and they need your support to keep on doing what they do best!

Tickets for all of these productions can be purchased from Computicket and the prices vary for each show.

Tania loves to cook and create magic in the kitchen for family and friends (or even just herself). Be it finding a new recipe or making a tried and tested dish from her recipe folder - the kitchen is her sanctuary. Find her hanging out with friends round the braai or curled up on the couch reading the latest crime drama. With a spring in her step and a song in her heart you’ll find her supporting local artists in theatre, music and dance – from a hip hop competition or the latest musical on stage at Artscape in Cape Town. Enjoying all things culture she likes to share her experiences and delights with those around her.
