Johnny Clegg

Impi! wo ‘nans’ impi iyeza
Obani bengathinta amabhubesi?

These opening lyrics to Johnny Clegg and Savuka’s song Impi evoke such happy feelings for me. Not only to a multitude of memories sweep into the forefront of my mind, but it is such a powerful song sung by such a favourite and wonderful South African artist.

Johnny Clegg is a legend in the South African music industry, and on Saturday 6 November he will be celebrating his 30 years in the music industry with a concert at the Emmarentia Dam in Johannesburg. This is a once off event brought to you by 94.7 Highveld Stereo.

This will be a truly magical and historical event as the original members of the Juluka band will be reunited specifically for this event and will be performing the hit songs of Savuka, Juluka and Johnny Clegg which have allowed him to have a career spanning three decades.

Johnny Clegg in concertNot only is Johnny Clegg a musical legend, he is also an ambassador for our country. He is unique in his music creations by combining African music with both folk and international rock sounds. He has created a unique sound which is absolutely special and something that we as South Africans should treasure. He has performed all over South Africa as well as Europe, the States, Australian and more. His performances are more often than not sold out.

Some of my favourite songs of his are “Take My Heart Away”, “Impi” (of course), “Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World”, “Asimbonanga” and some songs with are more anthems than anything else “Great Heart” and “Scatterlings of Africa”. With such a vast music library you can expect to be taken through these decades of music and enjoy a part of music history.

Clegg always brings an energetic performance so you can expect him to be bouncing around on stage with endless energy and I’m sure you will be up on your feet moving to his music. This is going to be a special performance so it really would be silly to miss out.
