Events in July – Plenty to keep you busy after the World Cup
It is almost July and while South Africa is pumping with the World Cup and all of its related activities, fan parks and excitement, the rest of the country hasn’t gone to sleep. South Africa will be buzzing with a number of annual events and festivals in July and once again we’re here to let you know what and where they are …
First of all, we’re sure you don’t need reminding about the World Cup final match – but just in case, it takes place on Sunday 11 July at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg. The match kicks off at 20h30, so book your seat in front of the television now if you haven’t been fortunate enough to secure a ticket to what should be an exciting finale to the 2010 World Cup in our beautiful country.
Events in Gauteng:
Other exciting things taking place in Gauteng during July is the Springbok Vasbyt road race on Saturday 17 July 2010 in Pretoria Accommodation at the Voortrekker Monument. If you are looking for something beautiful to add to your home or are a collector of antiques (books, coins, porcelain figures and more) then the National Antiques and Decorative Arts Faire is where you need to head from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 July at the Sandton Convention Centre. The faire is open from 10h00 to 18h00 and there will be exhibitors from all over the country as well as internationally. Shopaholics will be delighted to hear that the International Fashion Sale will be taking place from 29 July to 1 August at the Coca-Cola Dome in Randburg with accessories and fashion for men, women and children you could even get your Christmas shopping done a little early this year. Events in the Free State:
The Xhariep Region in the Free State is hosting the Fauresmith Endurance Ride from 6-8 July 2010. This is an event for experienced horse riders. The event dates back to 1964 and with its long history it has made it increasingly popular. This ride takes the rider and their steed on a gruelling 205km journey through various terrains over three consecutive days and nights. The Volksblad Arts Festival in Bloemfontein will ensure loads of entertainment and fantastic productions. Not only will there be never before seen productions but there will also be the best of the best from other arts festivals in the country. Events in the North West Province:
Brightly Coloured Sight is an art project to raise money for the Guide Dog Association for the Blind. A number if paintings will be on display and for sale and the money raised will be donated to the association. Art lovers, animal lovers and everyone in between is welcome to come and support this worthy cause. The event begins on 29 June and runs until 9 July 2010 at the Main Museum, 42 Sol Plaatjies Street, Potchefstroom.

From 30 July to 1 August Die Horing Kunstefees in Phalaborwa takes place and is jam packed with stalls, 4×4 competitions, art exhibitions, fishing competitions, drum majorettes, folk games, boeresport, stage plays and more. Events in Mpumalanga:
On Sunday 25 July in Barberton the Jock Cycle Classic takes place. The Jock Cycle Club was founded in the early 1980’s and began the tradition of the cycle classic – one of the largest and oldest races in South Africa. Events in Cape Town and the Western Cape:
The Artscape Theatre on the Foreshore is the stage for the Cape Town International Ballet Competition from 12-17 July 2010. Talented dancers from across the globe will be showing what they can do during the elimination rounds from 13-17 July with the finals on Friday 16 July 2010. The Grand Gala Performance takes places at 19h30 on Saturday 17 July. Tickets for these performances are available from Computicket.
The Berg River Canoe Marathon is a flagship four day event covering 250km from Paarl to Velddrif. This is a tough race and paddlers should be prepared for some fierce competition. Not only will you be racing against some great paddlers but you will also be racing in the winter weather which can throw a spanner in the works. The Berg River Canoe Marathon has been contested since 1961. It is an extremely tough challenge, taking place over four days and covering 227 kilometres, making it the longest race in South Africa. The annual Bastille Festival takes place in Franschhoek on 17 and 18 July 2010. Come and join in the festivities as Franschhoek celebrates their centuries-old French Huguenot heritage. Food and entertainment will be plentiful over this weekend and will cater for the whole family so come and enjoy the day together.
Rawsonville will be hosting the Breedekloof Soetes & Soup on 23 and 24 July 2010 and the weekend will be buzzing with entertainment, art exhibitions, homemade country soups, Muscadel and Port. Events in the Garden Route:
Knysna is taken over by the Knysna Oyster Festival and its run off events from 2-11 July 2010. Come and join the masses in one of the most popular events in the Western Cape. This is an extremely popular festival and if you haven’t booked your place far in advance you may need to book in nearby towns and make day trips into Knysna town.
There are loads of events and activities planned during the festival and the main sporting events are the Cycle Tour on 3 (mountain bike) and 4 July (road race). The Forest Marathon includes both a half and full marathon on Saturday 10 July.

Events in the Eastern Cape:
The Rhodes Trail run is a premier trail run in South African and this 52km event starts and ends in Rhodes. This is a pre-entry by invitation only event but support is always greatly appreciated. The race starts at the Farmers Hall at 07h00.
The Billabong Pro takes place in Jeffreys Bay from 8-18 July 2010 and the eyes of the surfing world will be there. This is one of the most prestigious events in Africa and brings in scores of talented surfers from around the world. There is a 10 day waiting period for the competition but only four days are required for the competition. So come and enjoy the vibe!
Biltong lovers will certainly enjoy the Eastern Cape Biltong Festival from 16-17 July in Somerset East. This is a uniquely Karoo festival with a multitude of entertainment, stalls, kiddies activities and of course the South African treat – Biltong! If you’re looking for an event with variety then look no further than the Annual South Coast Lions Show from 8-11 July 2010. This event includes police and vehicle displays, competitions, talent searches, a beer garden, discos, a fun fair and loads more to keep you busy. If you like to watch a good film and be entertained then don’t forget about the Durban International Film Festival from 22 July to 1 August 2010. High on both the social and horse racing calendar is the Durban July on Saturday 31 July. With over 56 000 people expected grace the Greyville racecourse you can be sure you will find thoroughbreds of all shapes and sizes. Come on and shout for your filly and have a day at the races.
