Bistro 98 at Dunkirk Estate – A Review

Send to Kindle

I am always eager to try out new places to eat on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu Natal and because Bistro 98 had been recommended to me, we booked a table for dinner on my birthday. Located within the Clubhouse of the gated Dunkirk Estate in Salt Rock, Bistro 98 is open both to the public and to residents of the estate, serving up beautiful food in a chic and stylish setting…

The chef at Bistro 98 is internationally trained and it shows in the meals she plates up – simple but elegant and most importantly tasty fare! I started off with one of my favourites; halloumi cheese wrapped in Parma ham on asparagus with roasted cherry tomatoes. My husband ordered smoked salmon with prawns and avocado. Both were delicious and the portions were just enough – leaving enough space for our main courses.

I opted for Cape salmon as a main course; not my normal choice but as fillet was on the menu for the birthday lunch we would be hosting the following day I thought it wise to limit my red meat intake! The salmon was served with a small, fresh side salad (I much prefer a salad to a watery, insipid portion of vegetables) and crispy fries. My husband didn’t steer far from his normal choice – calamari again! This too was served with crispy fries. We were bordering on thoroughly stuffed after our main courses but a birthday is not a birthday without dessert and we shared the cheesecake with a crunchy chocolate topping … the right decision indeed.

Our meal was superb and the atmosphere as a whole at Bistro 98 makes a guest want to return. The interior of the venue is exquisite and the stackable glass doors work beautifully with the open plan layout. I will have to go again for breakfast or lunch to appreciate the views of the surrounding indigenous bush and the swimming pool.

About

After living in London and travelling the world for many years and more recently living in the Mother City, I now reside on a tranquil sugar cane farm in Kearsney; an area steeped in the history of South Africa’s sugar industry. During the summer months I get involved with the community by assisting the local primary school with swimming lessons at our country club. Some of my favourite things are reading or picking freshly grown vegetables and Iceland poppies in our garden. Milly, my boxer loves her walks to the river that runs through our farm and sometimes, Sandy the cat I hand reared, joins us for a stroll!
