Get to Music in the Mountains this Weekend

If you have no plans this weekend consider yourself booked or if you have already made plans consider them changed because if you are anywhere near Champagne Valley in the Drakensberg you need to ensure you’re at the Music in the Mountains. What is this you ask, why it is a music festival that has been happening for over 20 years and is hosted by the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Come and be entertained with music for all, from classic melodies to the latest chart topping hits. Browse through the variety of arts and crafts stalls, enjoy a cold beverage in the beer garden and fill your bellies with some of the tasty food on offer. Guest artists at the 2013 festival include DBC, Navi Redd, Ses Snare, Blarney Brothers, Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Rocco and more. Full programme details can be seen below:

FRIDAY 26 April

Drakensberg Boys Choir – Choir Con Carne (80 Minutes)
This show highlights the versatility of the choir as an instrument. Audiences will get a limpse of the flexibility and the possibilities of music sung with a choir. From compositions accompanied by a Jewish harp, tuned waterglasses, handbells and African marimba, adding extra colour to some of the music. Audiences can expect to enjoy the latest pop songs on the charts, moving renditions of beloved classical works and virtuous contemporary choral music – an array of colours of the musical spectrum will be represented in this concert. The repertoire consists of extracts from musicals, pop and classical, together with a healthy selection of composed choral music and works with that something extra.

Ladies & Lads (90 Minutes) – (Featuring the Drakensberg Boys Choir, Rina Hugo, Magda de Vries, Frank Mallows & Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi)
Magda de Vries, Frank Mallows (the oldest ‘lad’ on stage) and the Drakensberg Boys Choir will join forces to perform the SAN Gloria, by Peter Louis van Dijk, especially arranged for this specific combination. The duo will entertain the audience on virtuous works for marimba and vibraphone. Rina Hugo’s relationship with the DBC has been thriving for more than a decade. Rina and the young lads will entertain the audience with some golden oldies, while Hlengiwe, a young up-and-coming South African soprano, will deliver proof as to why she was the winner of the ATKV-Muziqanto national classical vocal competition.

Choirs Extravaganza (80 Minutes) – (Featuring Bronberg Kinder Koor, Le bone College & St Michaels Girls Choir and a guest appearance by the Drakensberg Boys Choir)
Enjoy a performance with the sounds of youthful voices, featuring the Bronberg Kinder Koor, Lebone College and the St Michaels Girls Choir. The choirs featured here are all known for their energetic and vibrant performances. Audience members will leave the auditorium with a feeling of well-being. A special guest appearance by the Drakensberg Boys Choir will round off this special amalgamation of choirs.

Navi Redd (60 Minutes)
Navi Redd is an A Cappella group with a sting in its tail and its repertoire includes anything from Grease and The Beach Boys to Johnny Clegg and Steve Hofmeyr, Queen to the Rolling Stones, Bee Gees to CCR and Nickelback to Timbaland. Since the group’s inception early in 2004, Navi Redd has been amusing crowds all over South Africa, and has grown to be loved by the public and widely respected by all involved in the corporate entertainment industry … A Cappella for the people! Recently they also performed internationally in Namibia and the Seychelles.

Rumpilstiltskin (55 Minutes)
This darkly glamorous gothic tale of the strange little man who hated children, who spun straw into gold, and who could split the earth with a stamp of his foot, is brought to horrifying life by Creative Madness, an award-winning company who have produced shows like A Mariner’s Tale, A Froggy Fairytale and The Legend of Icarus, in association with the Actors Unemployed Company (The Complete Works of Shakespeare – Abridged, and Birdman). Using puppets and a wistful Victorian air, this grim tale is regaled. Suitable for all ages – parental guidance is advised for very young children.

Rocco (90 Minutes)
After the great success of his previous albums, Beautiful Beautiful Piano and More Beautiful Piano, Rocco de Villiers is back on stage to perform songs from his latest album Stunning, as well as some of his previous hits. Songs being performed include Final Countdown, Music Box Dancer, Anna, Aeroplane, Edelweiss, What a Wonderful World, You Raise Me Up, Kla-1 Kla-2 Kla-3 Kla-4, Chariots of Fire, Seemeeu and many more. As usual, his music is accompanied with quirky comments, a beautiful suit and a flower!

Drakies & Divas (70 Minutes) – (Featuring Drakensberg Boys Choir, Nadine & Cat Simoni)
This is a one moment in time opportunity for audience members to experience the magic, when Nadine’s vibrant voice and personality is beautified by the angelic sounds of the Drakensberg Boys Choir. They will perform the award-winning Some Nights, as well as Whitney Houston’s’ hit One Moment in Time. Cat Simone is no stranger to Music in the Mountains, and this time she joins the boys on stage for an exciting evening of pleasant music-making.

BaRock & Roll (70 Minutes) – (Featuring Drakensberg Boys Choir, String Orchestra and Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi)
Tickets: R130 *R120 **R110 (Prime Seating +R20 Per Ticket) The Drakensberg Boys Choir will present the Missa Dolorosa by the Baroque composer, Antonio Caldara. In the second half the audience will be treated to the choir’s rendition of a few beloved pop and rock songs, accompanied by a band of accomplished musicians. Don’t miss this opportunity to BaRock and Roll with the choir!

Choirs Splash (90 Minutes)
Featuring Midlands Youth Choir, St Dominic’s, Reinberger Kamerkoor & Eunice Girls Choir and a guest appearance by the Drakensberg Boys Choir. Enjoy a performance filled with beautiful voices and harmonious sounds, featuring the Midlands Youth Choir, St Dominic’s Choir, the Reinbergber Kamerkoor and the Eunice Girls Choir. These choirs thrill audiences countrywide with their exuberant performances. A special guest appearance by the Drakensberg Boys Choir will add extra flavour to this concert.

Ses Snare (60 Minutes)
Well-known hit songs are arranged for six guitars and six voices. Ses Snare have used this recipe for the past 5 years all over the country, in shows at Arts festivals, theatres and corporate functions. Ses Snare is a live band – no backing tracks! This aspect has made Ses Snare the darling of audience’s country-wide – they bring well-loved songs to audiences in a way that no other band does in South Africa. Look forward to hearing old-time favourites from The Eagles, John Lennon, The Beatles, Freddy Mercury and Jack Johnson.
