Zoete Zonde

On Monday, January 7th I slipped back into routine again, and with that came the end of the festive season indulging, or should that be overindulging? Luckily for me however the line in the sand was drawn on January 7th which meant I had enough time to slot in a visit to Zoete Zonde on January 6th! My father had read about the coffee shop and because I’m always on the lookout for a decent coffee we popped in on our way home from Ballito.

The slogan for Zoete Zonde in Ballito is ‘your sweet sin’ and indeed it is. The menu is substantial enough that one has a fantastic choice of meals but for me it’s always, and I mean always, about the sweet stuff. The speciality of Zoete Zonde is their waffles and the owner, a native of Belgium definitely knows how to whip up a waffle.

My Dad opted for a savoury version with ham and cheese while my husband and I shared a plain waffle, dusted with icing sugar and served with maple syrup and vanilla cream. It was heavenly!

Other meals include a light or traditional breakfast, yoghurts, croissants, muffins or a favourite of mine, boiled egg and soldiers. Prices range from R22 for the eggs and soldiers to R38 for a traditional breakfast. Lunches include toasted sandwiches and baguettes, both with a variety of fillings (from R48), Croque Monsieur and Madames, soups and salads (R35 and R45 respectively) and savoury pancakes which range from R25. Desserts are sweet pancakes, traditional Brussles waffles in both the sweet or savoury form (from R30) and a selection of cakes.

The decor too at Zoete Zonde is just up my alley. A dark, screed floor compliments the pale blue walls and white furniture while a large, wooden dresser is home to a display of Dilmah tea and cakes. Gorgeous artwork adorns the walls and colourful glass balls hang from the ceiling. The shop is light and airy – just what one needs when seeking respite from the KwaZulu Natal humidity.

About

After living in London and travelling the world for many years and more recently living in the Mother City, I now reside on a tranquil sugar cane farm in Kearsney; an area steeped in the history of South Africa’s sugar industry. During the summer months I get involved with the community by assisting the local primary school with swimming lessons at our country club. Some of my favourite things are reading or picking freshly grown vegetables and Iceland poppies in our garden. Milly, my boxer loves her walks to the river that runs through our farm and sometimes, Sandy the cat I hand reared, joins us for a stroll!
