Events to get you going in March … popular festivals in South Africa

Vintage Tractor Fair

Vintage Tractor Fair

With January behind us and February almost over, suffice it to say we are in the swing of 2010 and if you haven’t quite hit fever pitch yet, what with the World Cup just around the corner, how about we get your excited with the upcoming events in South Africa in March.

... in the Free State
If you have ever visited a farm or watched any sort of farming programme on television or even a movie with a farm setting you are sure to have seen a big machine rumbling around the fields. If you are not sure what that machine is you really should get out more, but if you know what a tractor is by sight and sound and would like to know more about these machines why not head in to Clocolan in the Free State from 5–7 March for the annual Vintage Tractor Fair ...

Yes boys and girls there has been a vintage tractor and engine fair every year since 1989 and more than 150 of these on display. Some of the tractors come from as far afield as Natal and will parade the streets on Friday the 5th. You can also watch these machines take part in the National Ploughing Championship or hand ploughing with a team of Nguni bulls. For more information you can contact Coenie on +27 (0)82 374‑4690 or Ferdie on +27 (0)51 943‑7108.

Surrender Hill Marathon

Surrender Hill Marathon

The Free State is also home to the Surrender Hill Marathon in Clarens on Saturday 6 March which is organised by the Bethlehem Marathon club. There are 3 options for you to choose from, depending on your fitness level. The full 42.2km, half 21.1km or fun 5km races which all begin at the Martie Lotz Hall. Don’t be fooled though, this is a tough course with beautiful scenery. For more information you can telephone Enslin van Blerk on +27 (0)58 223‑1042 for more information.

... in the North West Province
Another sporting event being held on Saturday 6 March is the Lichtenburg Zebra Zamba and MTB Race in the North West Province. Why should you take part in this event you’re asking yourself? Well the answer is simple, it is because you’ll be running in a very unique setting, the Lichtenburg game breeding centre. Some of the endangered species that have made this centre their home over the years include white Rhino, Pere David’s deer, Cape mountain zebra and various oryx. The 32km race commences at 06h00, the 10km at 07h00, the 5km fun run at 07h45 and the 32km MTB at 10h30, you can contact Mariette van Biljon on +27 (0)84 550‑2006 for more information.

Om Die Dam

Om Die Dam

North West Province seems to be all about fitness this March with the Om Die Dam Ultra Marathon close on the heels of the Lichtenburg Zebra Zamba on Saturday 20 March. The popularity of this race is due to the magnificent surroundings and the organisation of the race (as it is regarded as one of the most well organised in the country) and is fondly known as the race for the man in the street. It takes place at the Hartbeespoort Dam and so is easily accessible to all.
