We’re celebrating Adventures in South Africa this coming month and in keeping with the theme, have listed some notable events that adrenalin-seekers, sportsmen and adventurers may be interested in.

Remember, you don’t need to compete to join in on the fun – spectators most welcome! Come and cheer them across the finish line and maybe get inspired to compete next year …

In Cape Town and the Western Cape:

  • Blisters for Bread Charity Walk (30 August 2009)
    Get your running shoes out and support a worthy cause on a 5, 10 or 20 km walking route along the beautiful Cape coastline.
  • The Crazy Store Table Mountain Challenge (12 September 2009)
    Off-road running event – 35 km trail run or teams of 3 can relay distances of 8-17 km, around Cape Town’s world-famous mountain.
  • Pick ‘n Pay Women’s Interprovincial Golf Championship (13-18 September 2009)
  • Bainskloof Ultra & Half Marathon (24 September 2009)
  • Cape Outdoor Adventure & Travel Expo (2-4 October 2009)
    No sporting events to compete in, but a worthy stop for adventurers, with exhibitors covering everything “adventurous”, from caravanning and trailers to organic food tastings and must see Southern African travel destinations.
  • Freshpak Rooibos Fitness Festival (3 October 2009)
    A variety of sporting events for swimmers, cyclists and runners, the super-fit and not-so-fit. FitKids events round up the offering, ensuring fun for the whole family.
  • Gun Run 2009 (11 October 2009)

In Durban and KwaZulu Natal:

  • Dolphin Coast Ultra Marathon Walk / Run (6 September 2009)
  • Mont-Aux-Sources Challenge (12 September 2009)
    A 50km cross country solo trail run through the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.
  • MTN Asishove Race (17 October 2009) and the MTN Amashova National Classic (18 October 2009)
    Mountain bike races of varying lengths – challenge yourself with a 106 km race or one of the shorter distances (70, 39 or 35 km).

In Johannesburg and Gauteng:

  • Frontier Fly-Fishing Open Day (6 September 2009)
    An annual festival in Muldersdrift, showcasing all aspects of fly-fishing.
  • Avis South African Derby 2009 (30 September to 4 October 2009)
    Showjumping, Dressage, Equitation, Driving, Compleat Horse and Showing.

In the Eastern Cape:

  • Valley of the Flags Mountain Bike Race (29 August 2009) Steytlerville, Eastern Cape
  • Liberty Health Baviaanskloof Trail Run (12 September 2009) Baviaanskloof, Eastern Cape
  • Rhodes Extreme Mountain Bike Race (25-26 September 2009) Rhodes, Eastern Cape
