Upcoming Adventurers' Events

We're cel­eb­rat­ing Adventures in South Africa this com­ing month and in keep­ing with the theme, have lis­ted some not­able events that adrenalin-seekers, sports­men and adven­tur­ers may be inter­ested in.

Remember, you don't need to com­pete to join in on the fun — spec­tat­ors most wel­come! Come and cheer them across the fin­ish line and maybe get inspired to com­pete next year ...

In Cape Town and the Western Cape:

• Blisters for Bread Charity Walk (30 August 2009)
  Get your run­ning shoes out and sup­port a worthy cause on a 5, 10 or 20 km walk­ing route along the beau­ti­ful Cape coastline.
• The Crazy Store Table Mountain Challenge (12 September 2009)
  Off-road run­ning event — 35 km trail run or teams of 3 can relay dis­tances of 8–17 km, around Cape Town’s world-famous mountain.
• Pick 'n Pay Women's Interprovincial Golf Championship (13–18 September 2009)
• Bainskloof Ultra & Half Marathon (24 September 2009)
• Cape Outdoor Adventure & Travel Expo (2–4 October 2009)
  No sport­ing events to com­pete in, but a worthy stop for adven­tur­ers, with exhib­it­ors cov­er­ing everything "adven­tur­ous", from cara­van­ning and trail­ers to organic food tast­ings and must see Southern African travel destinations.
• Freshpak Rooibos Fitness Festival (3 October 2009)
  A vari­ety of sport­ing events for swim­mers, cyc­lists and run­ners, the super-fit and not-so-fit. FitKids events round up the offer­ing, ensur­ing fun for the whole family.
• Gun Run 2009 (11 October 2009)

In Durban and KwaZulu Natal:

• Dolphin Coast Ultra Marathon Walk / Run (6 September 2009)
• Mont-Aux-Sources Challenge (12 September 2009)
  A 50km cross coun­try solo trail run through the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park.
• MTN Asishove Race (17 October 2009) and the MTN Amashova National Classic (18 October 2009)
  Mountain bike races of vary­ing lengths — chal­lenge your­self with a 106 km race or one of the shorter dis­tances (70, 39 or 35 km).

In Johannesburg and Gauteng:

• Frontier Fly-Fishing Open Day (6 September 2009)
  An annual fest­ival in Muldersdrift, show­cas­ing all aspects of fly-fishing.
• Avis South African Derby 2009 (30 September to 4 October 2009)
  Showjumping, Dressage, Equitation, Driving, Compleat Horse and Showing.

In the Eastern Cape:

• Valley of the Flags Mountain Bike Race (29 August 2009) Steytlerville, Eastern Cape
• Liberty Health Baviaanskloof Trail Run (12 September 2009) Baviaanskloof, Eastern Cape
• Rhodes Extreme Mountain Bike Race (25–26 September 2009) Rhodes, Eastern Cape

Rest of the country:

• Two Countries Musina Marathon (5 September 2009) Musina, Limpopo Province
• Mazda Haenertsburg Marathon (8 September 2009) Haenertsburg, Limpopo Province
• Talisman Herald Karoo to Coast 100km Mountain Bike Challenge (20 September 2009) Knysna, Garden Route
• Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (2–11 October 2009) Augrabies, Northern Cape
