Here’s hoping you are planning on treating your Mother to a special day out on Sunday 13 May 2012 in celebration of Mother’s Day! With the many exciting annual events and festivals happening all over South Africa to choose from, that you can enjoy with family and friends, you are sure to find something perfect.

The seasonal transition from Autumn to Winter has us embarking on events with a difference – you can try free running a new sporting phenomenon taking Jozi by storm or participate in an extreme sport whilst taking in a bit of South African history. Other sporting events to join in are a charity Golf Day, a Big Walk or 10km running race. Many other activities on offer include a Koi Show, Flower Show, Hospitality exhibition and Port and Wine Festival to name a few, so don’t go into hibernation this Winter come and enjoy some of these fabulous events this week…

If you are a Koi enthusiast or if you are new to it all and need to find out more information, then make sure you don’t miss the SAKKS 21st National Koi Show from Saturday 19 May to Sunday 20 May 2012 at Brightwater Commons in Randburg. Urbanathletes will be excited to participate in the most unique opportunity to conquer the streets of Jozi this year. The Jump City Urbanathlon to be held on Sunday 20 May 2012 starting and finishing at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg is a 10km urban foot race designed for everybody, it’s an exciting blend of parkour, free running, climbing, swinging, sliding and jumping.

Swartkop Challenge

Swartkop Challenge

The Ladysmith Swartkop Challenge is something quite different and takes place in Ladysmith at the Wagon Hill / Platrand Battle site on Saturday 19 May 2012. Teams of 20 + 2 leaders take part in this extreme sport event which requires teams to draw a gun weighing approximately 1300kg up a hill and over a course of 130 metres. The festival is inspired by the feat of arms in the South African War of 1899-1902, so if you are interested in history and taking part in what can be described as an historic challenge then make sure you are here.

If you enjoy walking why not enter into the East Coast Radio Big Walk on Sunday 20 May 2012. The event starts at uShaka Marine World in Durban from 07h15 and you can choose from the 5km, 10km, 15km or 20km. The Big Walk also contributes to worthy causes as a result of the involvement of the Rotary Club.

Sunridge Park 10km

Sunridge Park 10km

If you are looking for a 10km race with an easy start and circular route then why not enter the Sunridge Park Shopping Complex 10km on Saturday 19 May 2012 in Port Elizabeth. The first 10 race finishers will take gold medals home with them, the following 100 runners taking home silvers and all finishers in both the 10km and 5km bronze medals.
