With the Winter Solstice occurring this week, signifying the shortest day, we can look forward to the days beginning to grow lighter and longer again, giving us even more reason to get out and enjoy some of the amazing annual events and festivals going on in the various provinces around South Africa.

We have a selection of wonderful activities from winter wine festivals, a country fair, prawn festival, exhibitions and sporting events which include a half marathon to a polar bear swim. You a bound to find something that caters for all. Chat with your friends and family to arrange getting together to make the most of your week . . .

Head to the Cape Town International Convention Centre on the Foreshore from Wednesday 20 June to Thursday 21 June 2012 for the annual Sign Africa & Africa Print Roadshow which takes place in Cape Town, Polokwane, Nelspruit and Durban and is for anyone from entrepreneurs, sign makers, display companies, marketing or ad agencies, digital printers, creative directors, architects, media owners or any other industry which would use signs and digital graphics. You will find a full range of signage and digital graphic products and services on offer.

Warm yourselves up this winter at the High Street Winter Wine Festival from Thursday 21 June to Saturday 23 June 2012 in Durbanville. Visitors can come and experience a selection of wines to taste and buy hand-made food items and fresh produce; there are two food courts, live music and free entrance into the Cape Wine Academy Wine Theatre. It’s a great way to push aside your winter blues.

Come along and enjoy the Swiss winter tradition of indulging in cheese fondue and wine at the Jazz and Cheese Fondue Fest each Sunday from 24 June to 5 August 2012 at Delheim Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Events in the Eastern Cape:

The Heartbreak Hill Half Marathon is one of Port Elizabeth’s oldest races and will be run for the 35th time on Saturday 23 June 2012 in Walmer. The route is moderate, undulating, circular and scenic. There are a few uphill challenging however for the majority of the race its pleasant flat running. All entrants will receive a medal for their achievement and walkers are welcome. The Komatipoort Prawn Festival takes place in Komatipoort from Thursday 21 to Saturday 23 June 2012 and this year is celebrating its 25th annual festival. This festival combines with the Komatipoort Festival and will be a day of fun and entertainment for every member of the family. There is a wide variety of entertainment that will take place on a large outdoor stage, plenty of stalls to browse through, a beer tent, a fun fair and so much more. If you would like to see the “Greatest Shoal on Earth” then you need to make sure you visit Durban between Tuesday 19 June and Friday 13 July 2012 for the annual Sardine Run. This is the annual migration of millions of sardines and is something truly magnificent. Hundreds of thousands of dolphins, sharks, whales and seabirds follow the impressive body of sardines as they move along the coast.

Boating enthusiasts will be excited the annual Durban International Boat & Lifestyle Show is back for its 9th year at the Durban Marina from Friday 22 June to Sunday 24 June 2012 and will be showcasing some of the most affordable and luxury craft available on the market. New models will be launched and new makes will be introducing themselves for the first time to the public. Ladies if you are looking to get fit then why not take part in the Spar Women’s 10km and 5km Challenge on Sunday 24 June 2012 on the Durban Beachfront. This year marks the 23rd event and all ladies 15 years and older are encouraged to take part in the 10km race. The event begins at the Sahara Stadium in Kingsmead.
