This week South Africa will be commemorating Human Rights Day on Wednesday 21 March 2012 a national public holiday. The establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on this day in 1996, 35 years after the fateful events of 21 March 1960 in Sharpeville when demonstrators were gunned down by police. The SAHRC’s aim is to promote respect for human rights, promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights.

We have several events to keep you entertained and to help you celebrate Human Right’s day from drag racing, to a right to run / walk race, a decor exhibition and a community posh market. There are many more activities to enjoy with the whole family throughout this week, so get your family and friends together and plan to visit some of these fabulous events on offer …

Events in Gauteng:

SA Drag Racing Champs

SA Drag Racing Champs

Runners and walkers can participate in the Sunnypark Right to Walk / Run 21.1km and 10km race on Wednesday 21 March 2012 as part of their Human Right’s Day celebrations. This run takes your through the scenic suburb of Sunnyside. There is a time limit of three hours and participants can enter at the start from 5.30am with the race commencing at 7am. Drag aficionados will not want to miss out on the first South African National Drag Racing Championship event for the 2012 season. Head to Tarlton International Raceway in Krugersdorp on Wednesday 21 March 2012 where you will be guaranteed intense racing by some of the country’s fastest drivers. Marathon runs should head to the Midmar Dam in Howick for the annual Umgeni Water Marathon to be held on Sunday 25 March 2012. Grab your canoe and paddle and head to the Orange River for the annual Orange River Canoe Race from Thursday 22 March to Saturday 24 March 2012 where competitors can enjoy the challenge of this scenic race. Spectators should find a spot along the river to help cheer the competitors on!

Another big swimming event takes place in Limpopo on Sunday 25 March 2012 in Bela Bela, the Pick ‘n Pay Bosveld Mile will be held for the 14th time this year. The first swim saw only 20 swimmers participating and this event grown in popularity. The water is clean and clear and there are 3 different age categories for swimmers as well as a 200m swim for children under 9 years. Every participant gets a medal and this is always a great motivation!

MTB Enduro Race

MTB Enduro Race

The Kingfisher MTB Enduro Race takes place in the quiet village of Hoekwil along the Garden Route close to Wilderness. Each year it is flooded with mountain bike enthusiasts and this year it is no different. Come and be a part of the adventure on Saturday 24 March 2012. The event is organised by the Hoekwil Primary School and is part of the South Cape Enduro Series. The route takes you through farmlands and the Bergplaas State Forest which is usually inaccessible for riders. Young riders can take part in the 3km race, but there are also 20km, 40km and 70km races to challenge all fitness levels.
