Weekly Events Round Up (2-8 Apr 2012)
This week we can look forward to not only celebrating Easter with hot cross buns and chocolate eggs but all the Easter festivities on offer around South Africa. The extra long weekend thanks to Good Friday and Family Day means more fun time to spend with those who mean the most to you.
Many events including sporting activities, end of season harvest festivals, well established music festivals and the performing arts presenting an Easter themed production, there will be something for everyone this week.
The various provinces are making use of the long weekend and treating us to some fantastic events of all varieties to share with your family and friends. So take note of these exciting activities happening in your area and enjoy the Easter celebrations . . . .
Events in the Western Cape:
With trail running growing in popularity the Two Oceans Marathon organisers have decided to introduce an additional event to the Two Oceans Marathon weekend. The Two Oceans Trail Run is to be held on Friday 6 April 2012 the day before the infamous marathon. With a short (10km) and long (22km) trail race on offer to challenge most levels of trail running. The trail running races will start at the UCT grounds and take runners along the lower slopes of Devil’s Peak and nearby forests with views over Cape Town.
A firm favourite on the Cape’s running calendar is the Two Oceans Marathon, this year the race will be run on Saturday 7 April 2012. Entries for the race have already closed but this is one of the most scenic races to be a spectator and participant of. With both an ultra (56km) and half (21.1km) mara-thon you can be sure of a challenge. The race begins on Newlands Main Road and courses its way through the city and its coastline.
Stanford will be entertainment locals and visitors for the annual Stanford Oesfees on Saturday 7 April 2012 at Sir Robert Stanford Wine Estate in the Cape Overberg. Bring your family and friends for a fun-filled day out and if you feel peckish head over to the renowned Madre’s Kitchen for a delicious bite to eat. Events in the Eastern Cape:
Lady Grey will be holding the annual Lady Gray Passion Play on Friday 6 April 2012 and is a highlight on the Lady Grey Arts Academy calendar. This is varied play including a troupe of dancers, visual artists, a chorus and choir as they depict costumes of the period and interactive scenes. Telephone +27 (0)51 603-0046 for more info.
Port Elizabeth will once again host the Nelson Mandela Bay Splash Festival from Friday 6 April to Monday 9 April 2012. Take part in a traditional Easter egg hunt or one of the many sporting events which include the inflatable boat championships and an ‘A’ rated volleyball tournament. The Port St Francis Eco Sport Festival will be held over the Easter weekend from Friday 6 April to Monday 9 April 2012 in St Francis Bay. Events in the Free State:
Dust off your Easter bunny costume and head to the annual Free State Easterfest in Ficksburg at the Showgrounds from Saturday 7 April to Sunday 8 April 2012. Events in KwaZulu Natal:
The always popular Splashy Fen Music Festival takes place over the Easter weekend from Thursday 5 April to Monday 9 April 2012 in Himeville in the Underberg. First established in 1990 this is the longest running music festival in the country and every year it brings together a wonderful line up of artists for a fabulous outdoor experience.
Ultra marathon runners can head to Vryheid on Saturday 7 April 2012 for the annual Vryheid Cash & Carry Liquors Easter Ultra Marathon where runners up for the challenge can enjoy this scenic point to point race. Starting at the Paulpietersburg Country Club athletes can take it easy on the mainly downhill first stage of the race and save themselves for the undulating second half of the race. The Rand Show is a favourite on the Gauteng festival calendar. Coinciding with Easter this event will guarantee a great day out with the family.
