The provinces throughout South Africa are a hive of activity this week mostly due to the up-coming public holiday thus long weekend and are treating us to some wonderful events of all varieties. We will be acknowledging Freedom Day celebrated on 27 April in South Africa which originally commemorated the day on which our first post-apartheid elections were held in 1994, but from that day onwards it has grown to have much deeper meaning to all of us. Now, Freedom Day also celebrates the freedom of choice, the freedom of religion, sexuality and speech.

The exciting annual AfrikaBurn kicks off from Wednesday 25 April to Monday 30 April 2012 in the Tankwa-Karoo National Park. This is a festival that brings together a sense of community through collaborative art projects – all in a non-commercial environment. AfrikaBurn is a place to collaborate, cooperate and add to the public environment – to build community. The aim is to create real social interaction. Don’t forget you need to bring all of your food, shelter, water and first aid supplies as well as bags to take your rubbish home with you.

The East London Show is hosted by the East London Agricultural and Industrial Society, a non profitable organisation which sets the platform for all agricultural, industrial, commercial stalls to exhibit their wares. If you are visiting East London then head to the East London Showgrounds, Gonubie Farmers Hall from Friday 27 April to Tuesday 1 May 2012 where you will be entertained by the many activities on offer including cattle auctions, flea markets and food stalls. Events in the Free State:
From Thursday 26 April to Saturday 5 May 2012 make sure you find some time for the Bloemfontein Show held at the Showgrounds on Curie Avenue, Bloemfontein. This is the largest agricultural and entertainment show in South Africa and one of the three largest shows. With over 450 exhibitors, 25 food stalls and lots of entertainment you will be sure to find something that grabs your attention. The agricultural side of the show includes an open air Saddle Horse Championship as well as national championships for Arab Horses and Welsh Ponies, provincial Tentpegging championships and championships for Miniature Horses. Events in KwaZulu Natal:
Margate will see an influx of motorcycles from Thursday 26 April to Monday 30 April 2012 all in honour of Africa Bike Week. More than 20 000 Harley-Davidson® riders from all over the world are anticipated to attend this event. The rally provides an opportunity for H.O.G.® members to meet and interact with riders and other H.O.G.® members from all over the world. The beautiful town of Graskop will be the setting for the annual Blue Swallow Festival from Friday 27 April to Saturday 28 April 2012. There will be an open-air market in Louis Trichardt Street with fine food, arts and crafts, an art exhibition, nature talks, potjiekos competition and a fun run. Through the Blue Swallow Festival the Graskop Conservancy hopes to raise funds to improve the ecological, tourism and social environment around Graskop. Some of its projects include the protection of the endangered Blue Swallow that nests around Graskop, conservation of the indigenous grassland, forests and marshland and lobbying against activities that threaten the environment. Cyclists should head to White River for the MTN Panorama Cycle Tour from Saturday 28 April to Tuesday 1 May 2012. Each stage starts and ends at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre just outside White River, and the route winds its way through dramatic hills and beautiful vistas. The Panorama Cycle Tour is the Lowveld’s spectacular contribution to the South African cycling calendar. The race has four stages, with an average of 100km per day for the first three stages and a short time trial on the fourth day.
