Weekly Events Round Up (27 Feb to 4 Mar 2012)
This week we bring you a selection of popular events around South Africa that have been running for many years from a community carnival to a vintage tractor fair and various music festivals. Alternatively, why not take part in some of the many other exciting events on offer ranging from a hobby exhibition, chilli festival, bridal show or crayfish and cultural festival.
For the music lovers out there RAMfest is starting this week in two new cities Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein, bringing the best of South African music to the more remote parts of the country. If you are a blues, rock or jazz fan then head to the Western Cape for some soul searching sounds. For the sports fans we have a marathon through the historical site of Surrender Hill with magnificent scenic views or for mountain biking enthusiasts enjoy the uniquely popular MTB race which route takes you through the Lichtenburg game breeding area. So gather your family and friends together and head to some of these amazing destinations so that you can take part in the fun of the fabulous events this week …
Events in the Eastern Cape:
For the first time ever, RAMfest will be visiting the windy city of Port Elizabeth to cook up a big storm of rock ‘n roll awesomeness on Friday 2 March 2012 at Hume Park. If you enjoy a bit of chilli on your palette then head to the Chilli Festival from Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March 2012 at the Walmer West Primary School in the William Moffett Express, Port Elizabeth. Events in Limpopo:
Polokwane will be rocking this week with the affectionately dubbed the ‘Biggest Fun Show in Limpopo’ the Polokwane Show & Music Festival, formerly known as the Pietersburg Show was started by 2 members of the Lions Club of Pietersburg in 1968. From Wednesday 29 February to Saturday 3 March 2012 top South Africa’s artists will entertain you, along with a Fun Fair with an imported, hair raising Simulator ride, enjoy the local talent show, a wide variety of food stalls and the beer tent and so much more. You will need to get there early on Friday and Saturday to ensure you claim your seat in the Marquee. Events in the North West Province:
The extremely popular Zebra Zamba route takes place at the Lichtenburg game breeding centre which makes it quite unique. Saturday 3 March 2012 marks the calendar for the Lichtenburg Zebra Zamba and MTB race with a 32km and 10km races, a 5km fun run and a 32km MTB. Events in the Free State
The village of Clocolan, will once again be host the annual Vintage Tractor Fair from Thursday 1 March to Saturday 3 March 2012. This fair began in 1989 and has grown from just 29 tractors to 153 in recent years. The National Ploughing Championships are held each year during this Fair, and are a must see, with these wonderful machines of a by-gone era puffing and panting to the finish line amidst much laughter, excitement and cheering.
The RAMfest has decided to claw its way into Bloemfontein on Saturday 3 March 2012 for what will hopefully be the first of many appearances in the City of Roses. This is what the Free State has been waiting for, their very own huge rock ‘n roll and alternative music festival. The Surrender Hill historical site in Clarens on Saturday 3 March 2012 will be the setting for the Surrender Hill Marathon giving runners 3 race options a 42.2km, 21.1km and 5km. Starting in Fouriesburg, this is a race with great reward, for the magnificent view of the mountains is both memorable and breathtaking. Events in the Western Cape:
A highlight on the Cape Town calendar is the Community Chest Carnival which takes place at Maynardville in Wynberg from Wednesday 29 February to Sunday 3 March 2012. The event originated back in 1951 as a theatrical garden party and has evolved into a carnival of international food stalls, games, musical entertainment and each year precedes the previous with the efforts of some 9000 volunteers who donate their time to this event.
Blues music fans will be heading to Kleinmond this Friday 2 March to Saturday 3 March 2012 to celebrate summer, sun and sea at the Big Blues Music Festival when some of SA’s most popular Rock, Blues and Jazz artists will offer two days of world-class entertainment next to the magnificent Kleinmond Lagoon. The Lamberts Bay Crayfish and Cultural Festival from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 March 2012 takes place in the scenic Cape West Coast town of Lamberts Bay. The MTB Challenge in Stellenbosch is celebrating its 11th year. This official event of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Lifecycle Week and part of the build-up to the annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour has grown from 700 entrants in its first year to one of the biggest in the country. The events takes place at Boschendal Wine Estate on the R310 outside Stellenbosch.
