As we start to enter the winter season and are sipping red wine, relaxing in front of a warm log fire trying to think of ideas for keeping the kids entertained or socialising with friends, why not check out some of the various annual events and festivals in and around the various provinces throughout South Africa.

Try something different this week with the incredible variety of activities on offer, there will be something for everyone from motor shows and 4X4 events to keep most men happy, to wine, port and oyster festivals, jazz and classical music to art exhibitions.

For the sporting minded individual there is a MTB challenge and with the well awaited epic ultra marathon taking place this week, all participants will be trained and ready to embark on this amazing journey, there is no shortage of things to do to get you out and about in the fresh air locally or if you decide to visit another province this week…

Big Band Jazz Festival

The annual Cape Town Big Band Jazz Festival will once again take to the Baxter Theatre stage in Rondebosch from Thursday 31 May to Saturday 2 June 2012. This festival gives young musicians the chance to perform and showcase their talents. Enjoy music from the jazz bands of various Cape Town schools as well as the UCT Big Band. From Friday 1 June to Sunday 3 June 2012 in Bergville you can take part in the Royal Drakensberg MTB Challenge which has various options for all fitness levels. If you are a beginner why not enter the 10km race which begins at 10h00 or if you feel you could manage a 20km which begins at 09h45. For those of you who are very fit try out the 40km race which begins at 09h30 or if you’re not into cycling then enter either the 15km race beginning at 08h30 or the 15km night run which begins at 18h00. Comrades Marathon

Endurance runners should be lacing-up for the Comrades Marathon – the world’s greatest ultra-marathon, 89 kilometres long and is a South African institution, internationally recognised for the body-sapping challenge it poses and the camaraderie it fosters among its thousands of participants. The run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban is set for Sunday 3 June.
