As we start to recover following the public holiday season’s flurry of activities, do not despair as we have many more exciting annual events and festivals from all over South Africa to keep you busy over the next week. Don’t let the impending winter weather give you the blues get out and about and have a little bit of fun by spending some time with your family and friends by doing something different.

Mark on your calendars some of the fantastic activities on offer whether it be practising your golf swing, enjoying African music concerts, meeting your favourite author and picking up a book or two at one of the literary festivals, to re-planting indigenous forest and giving back to the environment – make sure you check out some of these amazing events this week…

Marimba Festival

Marimba Festival

Golfers should join us at the Mowbray Golf Club in Mowbray, Cape Town on Monday 7 May 2012 for the 3rd Annual Big Fish Little Fish Montessori Charity Golf Day, where the proceeds of which will be used to purchase new equipment for the school and to assist families in the community by subsidizing school fees where possible. The Big Fish Little Fish Montessori will also donate a portion of its proceeds to a children’s charity (Elundini Centre for Disabled Children in Dunoon). The Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch, Cape Town will be swinging on Friday 11 May 2012 to the vibrant sounds from some of Cape Town’s best marimba bands at the annual Cape Town Marimba Festival. An anticipated event for many book clubs is the Franschhoek Literary Festival which takes place this year from Friday 11 May to Sunday 13 May 2012, in the gorgeous Cape Wineland’s town of Franschhoek. For three days this town is transformed into a get-together for readers, writers, book-sellers and publishers. The Platbos Forest is the setting for the Reforest Fest to be held from Friday 11 May to Sunday 13 May 2012. We’ll be camping in the southern-most indigenous forest in Africa, planting over 1000 trees over the weekend, eating great food, listening to awesome music in the evenings, having loads of fun on a weekend away in the Platbos forest which is near Gansbaai. This is a great weekend away for families, couples, friends, students, nature lovers, people who need a break from the city, anyone who loves trees – everyone is invited!

This year’s Knysna Speed Festival is sure to entertain any and all speed lovers from all across South Africa for a week of pure adrenalin and fun filled action for the whole family from Saturday 12 May to Sunday 20 May 2012. While the Hillclimb will always remain the core event, the Knysna Speed Festival will be far more than just a single motorsport race. The festival will incorporate a variety of events that will not only benefit charities and provide significant economic benefit for the town of Knysna, but will offer exciting activities for participants and spectators. In addition to the Renault Knysna Hillclimb, events to be included in the festival are the Knysna Motor Show, the Knysna Kart Grand Prix, Knysna Slot Car challenge, Knysna Soap Box Derby, and the Knysna Speed Festival Charity Golf Day.

An event that the entire family can enjoy is the Mabalingwe Lion Man Mountain Bike Race on Saturday 12 May 2012. It takes place in the Mabalingwe Game Reserve in Bela Bela and you will get to ride through the hills of this Big 5 reserve. Choose from either the 40km (recommended for younger cyclists) or the 80km race or 115km Ultra Marathon (recommended for more experienced cyclists). RBM 32km & 10km

This is an undulating out and back run through the Richards Bay suburbs of Meerensee, Arboretum, Veld-en-Vlei and Birdswood. The date of the race is specifically to cater for those training for Comrades and it’s also the best time of the year to run in Zululand!
