As we start to recover from indulging in too much chocolate over the Easter weekend, we have some energetic activities to participant in to keep us trim. It seems to be marathon season this April with many marathon events happening in the various provinces throughout South Africa. All these events this week will provide good training for those preparing for Comrades.

There are many events catering for the whole family, so whether you are running a marathon or cycling in the mountains there are distances and routes catering for all fitness levels. Other activities to look out for are the wine festival, eco ride, plant fair, art festival and birding bonanza to name a few.

So runners lace-up your running shoes, grab a water bottle and to head to one of the various destinations mentioned and enjoy the running events on offer this week …

Events in the Western Cape:

Breedekloof Wine Festival

Breedekloof Wine Festival

Head to Rawsonville for the Breedekloof Cloudy Nouveau Wine Festival from Friday 13 April to Saturday 14 April 2012 where you have the opportunity to taste unfiltered (cloudy) new (nouveau) 2012 white wines direct from the tank at participating wineries in the Breedekloof region. Birding enthusiast should venture to the Tankwa Karoo National Park in the Upper Karoo from Friday 13 April to Sunday 15 April 2012 for the annual Tankwa Arid Birding Bonanza. Those interested in birding can enjoy this fantastic opportunity to experience the vast variety of birds in the unique arid region and rub shoulders with South Africa’s top birders. This event is part of the SANParks Honorary Rangers Project in conjunction with BirdLife South Africa. All funds raised will go to birding projects in the Tankwa Karoo National Park. If you’re looking for a challenge then why not take part in the Syngenta Wildfees Marathon on Saturday 14 April in Ventersburg. You will run through the Willem Pretorius Game Reserve and although you will be challenged you will also enjoy the beautiful surroundings and may even spot some wildlife. Arthur Creswell Marathon

Arthur Creswell Marathon

Marathon runners heading to KwaZulu Natal have a selection of races to choose from this week starting with the Arthur Creswell Memorial Marathon on Saturday 14 April 2012 in Bergville in the Drakensberg. If you’re looking for a half marathon to take part in to keep your fitness levels up then why not enter into the Dick King Half Marathon and 15km Walk in Amanzimtoti on Sunday 15 April 2012. The first few kilometres of this event are a steep climb but soon ease into a gentle downhill. The route takes you on part of the historic route taken by Dick King on his legendary journey from Durban to Grahamstown. Events in Gauteng:

Johannesburg’s Benoni suburb will again be host of the Slow Mag Marathon and Half Marathon on Sunday 15 April 2012 and is voted one of South Africa’s top ten marathons. The lap course (one lap for the 21.1km race and two laps for the marathon) will run through the suburbs of Benoni and pass five lakes en route. The race, designed to show off the attractive sights of this East Rand town also circles a bird sanctuary (with buck and other small wildlife) and several parks. Rooiberg Eco Ride

Rooiberg Eco Ride

Bela Bela in the Waterberg will host the Garmin Rooiberg Eco Ride on Saturday 14 April 2012. This is a two day mountain bike stage race and entries are open for single riders in a variety of categories. A separate half marathon is held on day two and is aimed at the youth and junior categories but all riders are encouraged to take part.
