If you are looking for things to do this week, we’ve selected a number of fabulous annual events and festivals happening in the various provinces around South Africa to get you out and about. Spend some time with your family and friends and try something a little bit different.

This may even give you some ideas of what to do to entertain the kids during the upcoming mid year school holiday’s, you could use these events to plan an adventurous journey? You are bound to find something that suits everyone’s interests from sporting activities, to cultural, arts and food festivals there is something for all. So pick up the telephone and chat with your friends and family to arrange meeting up and make the most of your week . . .

Events in the Western Cape:

Bastille Festival

Bastille Festival

The four day Berg River Canoe Marathon takes place from Wednesday 11 July to Saturday 14 July 2012 and starts in Paarl and paddles into Velddrif. The race covers a distance of 250km so you’d better be up for the challenge. This challenge has been happening since 1961 and is a tough challenge especially because the winter weather can also prove to be a strong competitor.

Franschhoek, South Africa’s Gourmet Capital, will once again celebrate its centuries-old French Huguenot heritage with a wonderful feast of food, wine and entertainment at its annual Franschhoek Bastille Festival on the weekend of Saturday 14 July to Sunday 15 July 2012. So, with something for everyone, come celebrate this universal, colourful appreciation of French heritage, history and culture. C’est la vie!

Events in the Eastern Cape:

Billabong Pro

Billabong Pro

The Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay is such a highlight on the events calendar. This year it takes place from Tuesday 10 July to Saturday 15 July 2012. Come and watch the world’s top 32 ranked surfers as they surf the only African stop on the ASP World Tour. Cheer on the local talent of Jordy Smith as he takes on other champions such as John John Florence, Adriano de Souza, Damien Hogbgood and Pat Gudauskas. Enjoy some time on the beach and watch some fantastic surf in Jeffreys Bay.

Those of you who enjoy a piece of biltong will certainly be looking forward to the annual Eastern Cape Biltong Festival which takes place in Somerset East at the Show Grounds from Friday 13 July to Saturday 14 July 2012. Celebrate Karoo food and this local way of life. There is plenty of entertainment for the kids as well so this is certainly a family event. Bomvu Music Festival

Bomvu Music Festival

If all day, all night performances, fire dancing, gumboot dancers, teenage dancers, traditional face painting, local arts and crafts, drum making workshops, drum circle marathon till sunrise is your buzz the join us in Coffee Bay on the Wild Coast for the annual Bomvu Cultural Music Festival from Friday 13 July to Saturday 14 July 2012. The Rhodes Trail Run, South Africa’s premier trail race, is a 52km event staged in the Southern Drakensberg of South Africa on Saturday 14 July 2012. The event starts in the hamlet of Rhodes at an altitude of 1800m, and climbs (at one stage the gradient is 1:3) to 2670m at Lesotho View (on the Lesotho border) running along the Ben MacDhui snowfields before returning to Rhodes.

Events in the Garden Route:

The Knysna Forest Marathon is held on Saturday 14 July 2012 during the Knysna Oyster Festival and is always a great success. Participants can take place in either the 42.2km full marathon or the 21.1km half marathon. Head to Knysna for this favourite on the running calendar and enjoy what the Garden Route has to offer at this time of the year. The Springbok Vasbyt is organised by the marathon club of the Tshwane University of Technology and starts at the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria Accommodation on Saturday 14 July 2012 at 07h30. Events in KwaZulu Natal:

KZN Military Tattoo

KZN Military Tattoo

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will be presenting the respected KwaZulu Natal Military Tattoo at the main arena of the Kingspark Cycle Track in Durban Beachfront, between Wednesday 11 July to Friday 13 July 2012. Based on the ongoing success of military tattoos worldwide and the popularity of the Durban Military Tattoo during the eighties, it was decided to revive the local tattoo in 2008. It is now known as the KwaZulu Natal Military Tattoo and has been held annually since then.

The Durban Airshow takes place on Saturday 14 July 2012 in Durban North and will be a full day of delightful air displays at the Virginia Airport. The show is open from 10h00 to 16h00 and the entire family will have fun on the day. Telephone +27 (0)31 564-7167 for further details.

Hoedspruit Game Festival

Hoedspruit Game Festival

One of the oldest festivals held in the lowveld region, is the Hoedspruit Game Festival will be held in Hoedspruit from Friday 13 July to Sunday 15 July 2012. It was first held in 1987 and has been an annual event ever since. The event is held on the Blyde Wildlife Estate and you can watch planes performing acrobatics, chat to pilots and enjoy activities related to aviation and aviation awareness. Come and enjoy this event which has such a long history.
