Bella Lucia in Wynberg – a review

Bella Lucia

Bella Lucia

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Bella Lucia in Wynberg.  Newly opened, Bella Lucia is situated next door to the also newly renovated and re-opened Café Verdi opposite Maynardville in Chelsea Village.

Glass doors open onto a reception area with the dining area tucked just around the corner.  With a total group of about 15, we were seated at two long tables – the seating area is enormous and what’s great about Bella Lucia is that there is plenty of space.  There are not too many tables and couches are placed invitingly in front of an open fireplace.  Some of the tables are centred in very comfy looking booths – I think that would be my ideal seating choice.

We had gathered for a birthday celebration and in true Mother City style some guests arrived late.  It was a perfect time though to catch up with friends over a glass of Veuve Cliquot our birthday girl had bought back from a recent business trip to Paris!  The service was outstanding – waiters were always nearby with a never ending tray of bubbly and management did not seem to mind us taking over most of the restaurant!

The food was delicious.  I started with a Rocket, Pear, Walnut and Blue Cheese Salad; the perfect light but tasty meal which I followed with Braised Lamb Shank, Herb Cous Cous with Olives and Gremolata.  Absolutely sensational!  I love a lamb shank and this one seemed slightly smaller than normal – a perfect portion.  I was going to opt out of dessert but my sweet tooth got the better of me and I ordered the Amarula Pannacotta – to die for.  Not too sweet and perfectly creamy.

Other dishes on the menu ranged from fresh soup, steamed mussels, beef carpaccio and fattoush salad for starters.  Main meals comprised Roast beetroot tarte tatin, fish of the day, slow roast pork belly and sirloin steak with Bearnaise sauce.  An indulgent tiramisu, chocolate pot and sticky toffee pudding come up top of the pops on the pudding list!  One can take wine (corkage of R35) but the wine list is extensive.

I really enjoyed Bella Lucia – the décor was understated but not boring and the oversized knife, fork and spoon on one wall is a great feature.  Give this ristorante Italiano a try.

About

After living in London and travelling the world for many years and more recently living in the Mother City, I now reside on a tranquil sugar cane farm in Kearsney; an area steeped in the history of South Africa’s sugar industry. During the summer months I get involved with the community by assisting the local primary school with swimming lessons at our country club. Some of my favourite things are reading or picking freshly grown vegetables and Iceland poppies in our garden. Milly, my boxer loves her walks to the river that runs through our farm and sometimes, Sandy the cat I hand reared, joins us for a stroll!
