Bowls of Deli Olives

Bowls of Deli Olives

Yesterday we took a good look at some of the best bakeries in Cape Town and today we take a look at the best deli’s in town …

The delis

Deli Delish
Whilst a scoot in and out will have you armed to the hilt with a series of dips, pâtés, olives, cheese, charcuterie and wines, you can also sit and enjoy breakfasts and sandwiches in style in the 120 year old farmhouse right in the midst of Hout Bay. Besides, the place buzzes, and the menu excites.

Biscotti at Giovanni's

Biscotti at Giovanni’s

Some claim this is the best deli in the country. Unassuming from the outside, it still manages to stock delish food from all over the world – San Daniele ham, Serrano, Pancetta, salamis, buffalo mozzorella, dolcetta. The shelves are filled with oils, vinegars, pickles, pastas, coffees, teas, chocolate, jam, honey, fruit, nuts, fresh breads and pastries, liqueurs and wines. They also sell Rudi’s sausages so if you’re after the wild boar infused with chocolate and chilli, it’s here.

La Cuccina
The emphasis in this kitchen is on home-made, often using organic ingredients. As they say ‘from our kitchen to yours’. Great place to pick up a free range chicken pie made from scratch. This is one spot you’ll find real free range sausage, chicken and beef, and the deli fridge is packed with everything from rocket pesto to marinated artichokes.

Marvellous Melissa's

Marvellous Melissa’s

Where would we be without Melissa’s? Their food shops in Newlands, Constantia, Tyger Valley, Stellenbosch, V&A Waterfront, Blouberg and Kloof Street are always humming. Great place to meet up, or stock up on breads and their incredible chocolate and carrot cakes. Don’t overlook their lemon curd or quiches either, and they usually have a shelf dedicated to artisan chocolate.

Saucisse Deli
Another Old Biscuit Mill find, Saucisse Deli not only writes quaint food quotes all over their walls, but they’re also one of the few spots at which you’ll find free-range bacon. They specialise in local meat and cheese, so you wouldn’t expect different, and their excellent breads are baked daily.

Freshly Sliced Charcuterie

Also a restaurant and coffee shop, Andiamo lies in the heart of the trendy Cape Quarter, where its typically Italian tramezzinis, pasta, and pizzas keep the general populace happy. Inside the deli stocks well over 200 different local and imported items, there are sandwiches to go, fresh breads, meats (mostly imported), coffee and other necessary evils.

New York Bagels
Great spot if a spontaneous moment for a picnic arises in Sea Point as the selection of dips, breads and meats, German sausage and other unusual imports in their food court will have you umming and ahhing but happy. If you’re up early enough, their breakfasts do them proud.

51 Regent Road, Sea Point, +27 (0)21 439 7523

Unusual to find such a successful deli in the southern suburbs, but this gem in Tokai manages to combine bakery, deli and restaurant to provide its patrons with a one-stop food experience. The NY theme is fun, the baked goods nummy and the deli, whilst not extensive, offers enough croissants, muffins and pastries to satisfy the hungry.
