Empire Cafe in Muizenberg a community favourite

Empire Cafe

Empire Cafe

Tucked in a hidden lane above the railway line, Empire Cafe occupies a double volume space in an original vintage building in York Road, Muizenberg. After eight years, Empire still reigns supreme as Muizenberg’s favourite breakfast and lunch spot.

Locals breeze in throughout the day for their fix of Tribe organic coffee, legendary breakfasts and catch-up chats with friends. Bikini and board-short clad surfers make their way to Empire for much needed sustenance between catching waves, greeted by owner and surfer, Dave Jones, as they shuffle in.

With the addition of free wifi, customers can be seen typing away at their laptops from morning until the 4pm closing time. Empire Café’s secret ingredient is that it offers more than just a great cup of coffee; its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere make it a community favourite.

Dave, who is not only the owner but also the hard-working chef, has dedicated eight years of his life to the restaurant and his hands-on approach is evident. All the delicious pastries are made on site and so are the sauces, pickles, spreads, bread and pasta.  Empire also stocks many much-loved local beverage brands, including Lady Bonin Tea, Everson Cider, Darling beer and Jack Black beer.

Scribbled on a chalkboard every morning and afternoon, the deli style menu entices the hungry with hearty breakfasts and scrummy lunches. The BBQ and mushroom burgers, served with hand-cut crispy chips and a side salad are a must-have, with the lip-smackingly delicious linguini and fettuccini dishes following closely behind.

Empire Cafe

Having recently undergone aesthetic changes, Empires revamped look, with its cool grey walls, new balcony, painted exterior and pastry displays, reflects its modern sensibilities along with a playlist that ranges from The Cure and David Bowie, through to The Shins and PJ Harvey. Take your friends, family or just your laptop to Empire Café and enjoy a scrumptious burger and beer while peering out towards the sea – you’ll keep coming back just to feel the Empireness.

Thaya is a travelling photojournalist, local music lover, mother and country-dwelling Impresario, living in a tiny village in the magnificent Overberg region. A love of capturing the soulful essence of a place has led Thaya to seek out lesser-known places, from folk music haunts, circus-themed restaurants, hidden beaches and crystal pools, to hot springs and all those overlooked places that hold their own brand of magic. When not out frolicking in rivers and embarking on adventures with her 11-year-old son, Thaya hosts music evenings in her town, cooks from her vegetable garden and has her nose in classic literature.
