The Gugulethu Tenors

The Gugulethu Tenors

With a stunning operatic cross-over act ‘Il Divo’ style  – which appeals to all, the performance will include opera favourites such as O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma and Nella Fantasia, as well as popular songs like The Prayer and Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata.  Experience the magic that is The Gugulethu Tenors!

I have what people would define as an eclectic music taste, I like a lot of music from golden oldies, to psy-trance, classical, pop, jazz and more. You name it there is probably some song or artist I am mad about in every genre. One which often surprises people is my passion for opera …

I remember when I first fell in love with opera, I was in standard eight (now called grade 10) and we were all called into an assembly and once seated on the cold hard floor we were told we would be given a demonstration by Cape Town Opera in preparation for their new show. Out on stage walked a large man (synonymous with opera I know) and he began to sing “It Aint Necessarily So” and I was immediately hooked. He seemed to glide over the stage while his rich and melodious voice filled every inch of the hall. We were treated to numbers from a variety of operas including Carmen, Madame Butterfly.

From that day I have had a sweet spot for operas and always have a few CD’s in my collection and they are firm favourites to put in the CD player while cleaning my flat because I can belt them out as if I am on stage. With a vacuum cleaner in hand that doubles as a microphone stand and drowns out my voice for the poor neighbours I am in heaven. I am always on the lookout for operas and operatic voices to give me the fix I need and am ecstatic to find out that the Gugulethu Tenors will be performing this June.

The Gugulethu Tenors

Who might these be you are possibly wondering? These young men have been around for more than ten years and are self-taught vocalists. After being selected from Fezeka High School in Gugulethu to take part in a music competition and wining first place in the best group category this group has grown from strength to strength. Formally known as Fez Tenors  and Three Young Tenors this group has won first prize at the Nyanga Junction Golden Voice Competition and Tygervalley’s Star Search Competition. They have performed for international stars Chris Rock and Oprah Winfrey and at many of South Africa’s top concert halls. Their raw talent, passion and ambition have enabled them to keep growing from strength to strength.

The group is made up of Xolani November, Loyiso Dlova, Mpendulo Yawa and  Siyabulela Nqola and on Sunday 20 June they will be performing at On Broadway Theatre (88 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town), tickets cost R75 at 20h30 and can be purchased directly from the theatre. Don’t forget that this is on Father’s Day and would be a fabulous treat for your dad. The group will be performing old favourites O Sole Mio, Nessun Dorma and Nella Fantasia as well as popular songs The Prayer and Miriam Makeba’s Pata Pata.

Come and enjoy the magic these men create with their voices.
