Jakes on Summerley – a review

Jakes on Summerley

Jakes on Summerley

A friend from Durban was in town on business yesterday and we booked a table for five at Jakes to have a catch up dinner.  I hadn’t been to Jakes for close on three years (why I don’t know; its always such a pleasure to dine there) but it was as I’d remembered it … and those delicious flat breads are still on the menu!

Jakes on Summerley is a stylish restaurant that wraps itself around a Brazilian Pepper Tree – very clever design indeed giving a quaint al fresco dining area between the bar area and restaurant.  We were seated indoors and our waiter Tendai saw to our drink order.

The menu is extensive with a number of specials up on the board.  For starters I tried one of the specials; a beetroot, coriander and feta soup!  It was so tasty and a lot sweeter than I had anticipated.  It was also probably the prettiest soup Id even been presented with!  Other starters included a tuna kebab on a bed of vermicelli noodles, duck spring rolls and calamari.

I had been toying with the idea of Norwegian salmon on sushi rice or pork belly on a bed of mash for main but in the end the sirloin with sliced brown mushrooms and cheddar cheese got my vote (Im a sucker for melted cheese of any kind!).  Two of my dining companions had the fillet with blue cheese, one ordered the same dish as I did and one chose the Jakes speciality: crispy duck.  All main courses were served with vegetables and perfect potato wedges.

Although prop vol after all of that we called for the dessert menu and ordered dom pedros and Irish coffees.  Id actually ordered a Kahlua coffee (I was counting calories after all that cheese) but Tendai got the order wrong and I landed up with a Kahlua Dom Pedro instead.  Maybe he’s just a mind reader and knew what I really, really wanted!  Nice work Tendai.

Jakes has a few specials on at the moment:

Just a quickie:  have a quick dinner between the hours of 5pm to 7pm (table to be vacated by 7.30pm) and get 25% off the entire dinner and drinks bill.

Do Lunch: order from the black board (a selection of sandwiches, salads, a pasta or burger) and get a Peroni, glass of white wine or a flat with and your 6th meal free.

Also pop in to Jakes on the way home on a Tuesday or Thursday and get 25% off most drinks and complimentary snacks.

Sounds good to me!

About

After living in London and travelling the world for many years and more recently living in the Mother City, I now reside on a tranquil sugar cane farm in Kearsney; an area steeped in the history of South Africa’s sugar industry. During the summer months I get involved with the community by assisting the local primary school with swimming lessons at our country club. Some of my favourite things are reading or picking freshly grown vegetables and Iceland poppies in our garden. Milly, my boxer loves her walks to the river that runs through our farm and sometimes, Sandy the cat I hand reared, joins us for a stroll!
