Jesus Christ Superstar on at Artscape
On at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town and presented by Pieter Torien is one of the world’s best musicals: Jesus Christ Superstar. The musical tells the story of the last days of Jesus Christ and highlights the political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The new production is a spectacular, dramatised version of the last seven days of the life of Jesus of Nazareth as seen through the eyes of Judas. Jesus is played by Cito and Mary Magdalene is played by South African singing sensation Nadine.
The large cast also includes Terence Bridgett as Herod, the award-winning Jonathan Roxmouth (from A Handful of Keys at Theatre on the Bay) as Judas and Anton Luitingh back as Pontius Pilot.
Jesus Christ Superstar (a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice) was first staged on Broadway in 1971 and then went on to London’s West End. From there it has been produced in many other countries and cities in the 70’s (including Lithuania, Hungary, Scandinavia, Sydney and Peru). In 1976 the production began its first US national tour which continued until 1980.
Productions of the show during the 1980’s included a South American premiere in Venezuela and from 1982 to 1984 an Australian production toured both Australia and South-East Asia. Still going though a production was staged in Oslo, Norway in 1990 and the show is still touring to this day having been produced internationally in Ireland, Brazil, India, new Zealand, Italy, Russia, Iceland and many other countries.
The show has received many awards; the 1972 Theatre World Award, the Drama Desk Award (also 1972) and in 2000 the Tony Award Nomination for Best Revival of a Musical.
