Johnny Clegg at Kirstenbosch

Johnny Clegg

Johnny Clegg

The 2009 / 2010 Kirstenbosch Summer series of concerts kicked off on Sunday evening with a superb performance from South African music legend Johnny Clegg.

The venue started to fill up from 3.30pm when the gates opened and by 5.30pm was packed to capacity with fans of all ages.  The Kirstenbosch concerts definitely get summer off to a good start with crowds of people arriving armed with picnics, cooler boxes and blankets.  The views from the concert venue of the gardens are spectacular and the atmosphere is always relaxed – what a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon and draw the weekend to a close …

Johnny has been performing for over 30 years and on Sunday evening  he lived up to expectations yet again; arriving on stage for his 90 minute performance in a bright orange suit and belting out hits both old and new.  On stage for well over an hour Johnny and his band had the crowd on its feet and singing along with him towards the end of the performance.

Johnny Clegg has been entertaining audiences around the world with his unique sound of ‘crossover’ music; a blend of Western pop and the unmistakeable beat of Zulu music.  He is the recipient of numerous international awards including The Mayor’s Office of Los Angeles Award in 1988 for the promotion of racial harmony, a Grammy Award in 1993, a Billboard Music Award in 1994 and in 2004 the Mayoral Medal of Honour award from the Mayor of Lyon for outstanding relations between the people of Lyon and South Africa.

The Kirstenbosch concerts only end on 4 April 2010 so there are plenty of Sundays left to catch at least one of your favourite artists at this world famous venue!
