Miles of Smiles

The running world will come to a halt this weekend as 20,500 odd runners take to the road between Pietermaritzburg and Durban for the 2010 Comrades Marathon.  However, on June 5th things will be back to normal and the first post Comrades running event on the Western Cape running calendar is the Robertson Winery Miles of Smiles.

The venue of this event which comprises a half marathon, a 10 kilometre race and a 5 kilometre fun run is the Robertson Winery in the stunningly beautiful Breede River Valley.  The Roberston Winery Miles of Smiles attracts thousands of runners every year whether they are competitive athletes going for the prize money or a family running the fun run together!  Taking part is what it’s all about …

The 21.1km entry fee for licensed athletes is R57 or R79.80 for non club runners.  If you wish to take part in the 10km run as a licensed runner it will cost you R36 or R57 if you are not club affiliated.  The 5km fun run is R16 to enter and T shirts are available to purchase for R57.

Robertson is an easy 90 minute drive from Cape Town via Paarl and Worcester.  These events however start at a civilised hour with the half marathon commencing at 8am, the 5km fun run at 8.30am and the 10 kilometre event at 9am.  Medals are given to all participants.

Showers are available at the end of the race so if you have not managed to secure accommodation in Robertson for the weekend you can bring a change of clothes and have a shower after your race.  You can then spend the day exploring the town or even pop over to the Robertson Wacky Wine Weekend festivities including a Farmers Market, Rock Show, arts and crafts and wine tasting.

There are various wonderful prizes up for grabs; the male and female who has the funniest costume for the 5km fun run will win their weight in wine!  What a prize.  There are also lots of great lucky draw prizes to be won:  ten Wacky Wine passports, 10 x R200 cash vouchers, bottles of wine, food hampers and a pair of running shoes.

After living in London and travelling the world for many years and more recently living in the Mother City, I now reside on a tranquil sugar cane farm in Kearsney; an area steeped in the history of South Africa’s sugar industry. During the summer months I get involved with the community by assisting the local primary school with swimming lessons at our country club. Some of my favourite things are reading or picking freshly grown vegetables and Iceland poppies in our garden. Milly, my boxer loves her walks to the river that runs through our farm and sometimes, Sandy the cat I hand reared, joins us for a stroll!
