Our first Q&A is with MD and founder of BEN Bikes, the group help­ing to raise aware­ness about cyc­ling in South Africa, who provide bicycles to impov­er­ished com­munit­ies and who offer Township Bicycle Tours to the pub­lic and 0ur second inter­view was with Casey Powell, a young Doctor based in Durban, who loves cyc­ling so much that she star­ted a bicycle tour com­pany with her hus­band, ‘on the side.’ Continued

Cyclists have been in a state of euphoria since the Cape Town muni­cip­al­ity announced they would be cre­at­ing ded­ic­ated bicycle lanes in and around the city. The City of Cape Town is one of the first muni­cip­al­it­ies in South Africa to advoc­ate the need for bicycle lanes, which not only provide a slight relief in highly con­ges­ted traffic loc­a­tions but also provide safety for the thou­sands of leis­ure and com­muter cyc­lists using roads every day.

The cycle path from Cape Town to Table View is the first of its kind in South Africa and stretches along the coast­line from Table View, through Milnerton, suc­cess­fully avoid­ing the high­way through the har­bour to the Foreshore. Cycling enthu­si­asts and those try­ing tire­lessly to pro­mote cyc­ling as a means of trans­port­a­tion in and around the city are encour­aged by the changes. Continued

The “Comrades” of the cycling world.

Entries for the MTN Amashova Cycle Classic which takes place on Sunday 18 October 2009 have now opened and if you want to be a part of this chal­lenge you need to apply before 28 September 2009. This is a 106km race from the Pietermaritzburg City Hall to Durban, start­ing bright and early at 06h30. There is also a less chal­len­ging but equally fun 39km fun ride com­men­cing at 05h45 from Hillcrest High School and end­ing and the Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World.

What about round­ing up your bud­dies and enter­ing the cor­por­ate chal­lenge? You can do this in either the 106km or, for those who are not as ener­getic, the 39km down­hill from Hillcrest. Enter more than 2 teams of 5 mem­bers each and you can hire a covered cor­por­ate site where you can relax after the race and it’s also a great way to build your brand ... Continued
