Jazz on Friday in Franschhoek starts 29 October

Jazz on Friday

Jazz on Friday

Another reason to be happy its finally Spring ... The new season of Jazz on Friday, featuring the Cape Dutch Connection, kicks off on 29 October 2010 and continues every Friday until 1 April 2011 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.  This season, the band will be playing at a new venue, Col'Cacchio Pizzeria in Huguenot Street, Franschhoek.

Band leader Derk Blaisse says the venue, which they tried out at a performance during the Bastille Festival in July, is perfect.  “The garden at Col’Cacchio has a wonderful country feel and is set against the backdrop of the Franschhoek mountains.  Being in the main road we have the advantage of attracting passers-by and the vibe of being in the middle of a cosmopolitan village. I think we are going to have a fantastic summer season.” Continued

A friend of mine shared a video about goema recently on Facebook. Since I don't have a clue what goema is, my interest was more than a little piqued. Mostly because this particular friend of mine has introduced me to the sounds of Cape Town jazz in her own way.

Her house, up until recently, was a one-stop-shop for Cape Town musicians who used her lounge for jamming sessions, and any occasion that warranted it (and a fair number of those that didn't) would find her home full to busting — singers with microphones, any number of guitars, the piano and even the odd double bass — I tried not to be there on birthdays, New Year, public holidays... you can see how this might have interfered with our friendship somewhat. Cape Town Jazz Safari

Cape Town Jazz Safari

Cape Town Jazz Safari

Reviewed by the New York Times as 'gritty authenticity' and revered by the locals as authentic grooves, easy listening in Cape Town is a musical must. Take in live jazz in the living rooms of living musicians. Sit at the dining room table that comforts the local jazzing legends of moody tunes and absorb them carving out rhythm in a private performance at their private residence.

A jazz safari will open the city's hidden alleyways with a secret handshake and a nod that allows access to otherwise unrevealed hotspots. A constant soul provider throughout historic spaces of pain, Jazz has been a cultural companion of Capetonians throughout the South African struggle. Brass notes, ivory keys and guitar strings continues to weave sounds and silences into an evening excursion of sauntering and socialising ... Continued
