I ♥ Oudtshoorn Because ...

I ♥ Oudtshoorn

I ♥ Oudtshoorn

Hi, We are Phil & Linda Putzel from The Gumtree Guest House in Oudtshoorn.

Oudtshoorn IS BEST KNOWN FOR the world famous Cango Caves and being the Ostrich-Capital of the world!

GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT an Ostrich Showfarm riding an Ostrich (or feeding an Ostrich). The best farms to visit are Highgate, Safari and Cango.

THE BEST scenic PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN from Swartberg Pass which has magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and incredible road.

Cango Wildlife Ranch — the real deal for sheer cuteness

Cango Wildlife Ranch

Cango Wildlife Ranch

Tired of always being tempted to click on emails and Facebook links of cute kittens, possums, koalas and other cuddly things, I decided to get the need to look at tiny bundles of fur out of my system by going straight to the source. Sure, LOLcats and digital pictures of hedgehogs are great, but nothing beats the real deal for sheer cuteness. A visit to the Cango Wildlife Ranch was in order. The ranch offers visitors an extraordinary and rare opportunity to interact with hand-reared cheetahs and to play with Bengal tiger cubs. I knew I would be in furry paradise ...

For the super adventurous and fearless the ranch also offers cage diving with crocodiles or the chance to wrap yourself in a python, great mucho excuses for going to look at the kitties. 3km from the charming Karoo town of Oudtshoorn makes for a long-ish journey from Cape Town, but it’s well worth the trip. Just make sure you take lots of photographs ... Continued

South African Hiking Trails

The Swartberg Hiking Trail

"Die Top"

"Die Top"

I’m not a born hiker. Some people seem to have a natural inclination to walking long distances, over uneven terrain, carrying heavy weights and call it leisure time. Myself, I’ve always thought that since our ancestors had no other option but to leg it everywhere, we owe it to them to make use of the wonders of manmade technology as often as possible.

That said, I’ve slowly been coming round to the idea that scrambling over rocks, with nothing but trailmix and water as fuel, can actually be a rewarding and even enjoyable experience. The hikes I’ve done on Table Mountain, in Ceres and in such fantasy novel settings such as Hogsback have proven to me that there is much more to hiking than aching legs and blisters on the feet ... Kuier a while at the Klein Karoo Klassique

Klein Karoo Klassique

Klein Karoo Klassique

This year the Klein Karoo Klassique Festival will be held in Oudtshoorn from 14 to 16 August and you will be able to enjoy wines from the Klein Karoo (from as far afield as Montagu), ostrich and game dishes and classical music. And when you order your wine at restaurants and other venues over this weekend you will only be drinking wines from the Klein Karoo region. There will also be wine and port tasting events and many of the local restaurants and cellars will be hosting performances of classical music.

The music over the weekend will be organised by the Oudtshoorn Music Society with assistance from Louis Heyneman (the CEO of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra) so you can be sure your ears are in for a treat. And while you ears are being treated to some classical music let your tastebuds be delighted with chocolates and sparkling wine, port, snoek cakes, flame-grilled ostrich, herb bread and marshmallow pudding ... Adopt a Cheetah

Adopt a Cheetah

Adopt a Cheetah

Adopt a Cheetah, Tiger or Lion ... One can feel a little hopeless in a world where a once almighty animal kingdom is fading slowly out of existence.

Adopting a creature of South Africa will uplift your spirits and conserve our wildlife so that the roar of a lion can be heard in the future tense, the race of a cheetah can be blurred into the distance and the pounce of a tiger can be felt everafter. Continued
