Sipping organic wine at Waverley Hills

Waverley Hills

Waverley Hills

Lying at the foot of the Witzenberg Mountains on the R46 between Tulbagh and Ceres, Waverley Hills produces organic wines that are definitely worth sampling. The Du Toit family entered the rather tough organic market in 2000 when they planted 21 hectares of vineyard, and we popped in to visit the estate recently.

Waverley Hills Estate lies on a natural watershed area — both the Breede and Berg River originated here before continuing on to enter two completely different oceans — which more than accounts for the myriad wild flowers and the effortless expanse of grasses at Waverley Hills. It was officially spring Continued

A Place to Dream in Tulbagh ...

Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher

On the edge of Tulbagh, shortly after passing along its bustling Main Road to where a rather imposing NG church sits overlooking the valley, there is an unobtrusive row of bluegum trees.

Just beyond this is the Bloekombossie restaurant — a rather quirky looking eatery that promises delicious teas and meals, complete with a curious cob house and thatched rondavel outback. Behind this lies Dreamcatcher cottage — quiet, peaceful and inviting, its attractive façade facing the Winterhoek range of mountains — the view captured from two of the three bedrooms ... Moniki Chocolatier – an outing in Tulbagh to remember!

Moniki Chocolatier

Moniki Chocolatier

Don't expect to find Moniki Chocolatier, on the outskirts of Tulbagh, easily. In hindsight, after much muttering about the derth of clearly marked signs, I realise that the rickety, wooden, handmade signage that changes without warning, from green, to purple as you enter Schoonderzicht Farm, are probably just part of the charm of what was by far my favourite stop whilst staying in Tulbagh.

The ride out here is well worth it. From the edge of town the scenery begins to improve as one heads closer to the Witzenberg Mountains, against which Schoonderzicht Farm, the home of Moniki Chocolaterie, rests. Continued

Tulbagh and its Hidden Secrets

Tulbagh's allure is immediately obvious. The scenery, which includes the towering peaks of no fewer than three mountain ranges, is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and the obvious seclusion of the horse-shoe shaped valley in which it lies simply adds further appeal to the already gorgeous countryside. But scenery aside, the town's secrets are well hidden, although it takes but a minor delve beneath the surface to unearth them, as I soon discover ... Continued

The Dreamcatcher in Tulbagh — a wonderful retreat from the city

Dreamcatcher

Dreamcatcher

If you are looking for very private Bed & Breakfast or Self Catering accommodation in the Cape, about an hour and a half drive out of Cape Town, The Dreamcatcher is a wonderful retreat. You will enjoy an extremely tranquil stay at this upmarket house, away from the hustle and bustle of the City.

Tulbagh lies about 140 kilometres north-east of Cape Town in the Breede River valley, surrounded by the picturesque Witsenberg mountain range. Dreamcatcher has 3 double bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (2 en-suite).

The bedrooms are beautifully furnished and are all air-conditioned. The bathrooms are spacious, modern with all the best fittings — as good as (if not better) than any 4 star hotel I've ever stayed at. The finer touches such as the complimentary toiletries and beautifully presented towels, sea shell arrangements and candles do a lot to make you feel very pampered and welcome in this beautiful house.
