We popped in to Old Main Brewery in Hilton for a quick bite to eat before heading to our evening show at the Hilton Arts Festival last week Saturday. Formerly known as Crossways, this Hilton institution has undergone a bit of rebranding and is cementing itself as the reliable place to go for good food, service and beer!
The aim of Old Main Brewery is to offer an English pub experience and with crackling fires (definitely needed in chilly Hilton), microbrewery beers and a relaxed vibe they have achieve that. The premises have a beer garden for summer days or otherwise the large deck with bright red umbrellas is the perfect place to bask in the sun while enjoying lunch.
The menu is extensive and there is something for every palate. We didnโt have starters but those options are peri peri livers, calamari or a cheesy, garlic roll. Lighter meals include a chicken, avo and feta wrap (R69), gourmet cheese and bacon burger (R74), cob chicken salad (R69) or nachos grande at R69.
Although there is a good selection of steak (rump, sirloin or fillet) as well as either eisbein or a chicken combo, all six of us ordered from the Pub Fare I couldnโt resist the roast chicken pie (74) served with either chips, salad or vegetables.
The portion I was served was enormous and I promptly cut the pie in half and handed one section of it over to my husband! He had chosen steak, egg and chips (R89) while my in-laws both went for the Foxx Lager battered fish and chips (at R79 this too was a large portion).
My sister in law enjoyed her Natal Indian curry (R88) and her husband didnโt share any of his Brewmasters Pan (R76) โฆ a selection of chicken strips, samasas, cocktail sausages, onion rings and fries!
Four beers are made on site: the Foxx Lager, Honey Badger Imperial Stout, 1806 Real Ale and Oystercatcher IPA. Iโm not a beer drinker so didnโt try any but others at our table did and thoroughly enjoyed their pints!
OMB have a number of weekly events; Tuesday is Ladies Night, Wednesday night is double up on burgers and drafts (R99 for two burgers and two OMB draughts) and on Friday nights there is either live music or a DJ.
