Everyone loves Cape Town. They do. And there are various reasons why. People, when asked, cite the mountains, the sea, the vibe in the city bowl, the open-top, red, double-decker bus, markets, and the food, as their reasons for living here.
But why do You Love Cape Town? – why do you live here or come back often?
Here are mine:
The Mountains
I know, I know it’s not very original, but take away Table mountain and the rest of the mountains that unfold in a cascade of marvellous mother earth vibrancy all the way down to Cape Point, and where would we be?
The Beaches
You cannot pass over the beaches like Camps Bay for beauty (have you ever looked behind you once you’ve fought the crowds and made it onto the sand?), and Llandudno for sundowners, swimming at Fish Hoek (when the sharks aren’t out), the penguins at Boulders and drinking in the views at Witsands.
The Lifestyle
It’s a no-brainer really: life in Cape Town is enjoyable. Even those of us who have to work for a living – live for the beaches, or weekends out in the mountains, or the city bowl’s nightlife.
The Food
Some of the best food markets and restaurants in the country (some say in the world) but then food always tastes delicious when you have a great outdoor lifestyle.
Drives
Like Victoria Road along the Atlantic Seaboard, and Chapman’s Peak Drive. Aside from gawping at how the other half live, the views over the sea and the Twelve Apostles mountain range from Mouille Point and Sea Point all the way via Fresnaye, Bantry Bay, Clifton, Camps Bay, Bakoven to Llandudno is a truly unbeatable drive. And it costs nothing. As opposed to Chapman’s Peak, where the drive is equally as beautiful, and the views of Hout Bay exceptional.
The Eclecticism
The southern suburbs, the Atlantic Seaboard, Hout Bay – each has it’s own ‘village’ feel, totally individual and different from the next place – there is little uniformity in Cape Town.
The Wine
You can’t package this in with food, although without it, food wouldn’t be as enjoyable, but the wines of the Cape are phenomenal, and the wine towns within reaching distance of Cape Town – Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Darling, Somerset West, Wellington – add another dimension to living here.
Weekend Markets
There are so many food and craft markets over any given weekend, that making a choice becomes difficult.
Great Attractions
Kirstenbosch, the Two Oceans Aquarium, the hop-on-hop-off bus around town, V&A Waterfront, District Six Museum, Lion’s Head at night at full moon, Robben Island, St George’s Cathedral, Rhodes Memorial…I could go on.
The People
For their indomitable humour, hospitable natures and their ‘can-do’ attitudes.
