Constantia Winelands Photographs

We couldn't have asked for better weather when we went on a short tour of the Constantia Wine Route recently. With so many options to choose from it was a difficult decision of where to go. We settled on a lazy lunch and wine tasting at Buitenverwachting and a late afternoon tasting (which turned into a relaxed dinner) at Bistro 1682 at Steenberg. If you live in Cape Town and haven't yet gone on your own wine experience I hope these photographs inspire you. Otherwise if you're a visitor this should be very high on your to do list... Bourkes Luck Potholes Photographs

Begin your wander around Mpumalanga with Bourke's Luck Potholes, for they are without doubt incredible. To see these geological wonders (it is no surprise to learn that Bourke's Luck Potholes made it onto Frommer's 500 places to take your kids before they grow up) that are an amazing array of white, yellow and dark brown eddies of colour because of the soil present in the water, you'll need to travel roughly 35 kilometres due north of Graskop on the R532. They are on the Panorama Route and are one of the major tourist attractions in South Africa, so best get there ahead of the bus tours...

Photos from the Argus Cycle Tour

The 2011 Argus Cycle Tour took place on Sunday, March 13th in perfect conditions; temperatures in the mid 20’s and more importantly, not a breath of wind.  After the gale force conditions of the previous two years I’m sure the wind and how strong it might be was the topic of conversation for most participants! I didn’t take part this year (I blame it on the wind last year) but seeing as I have the advantage of living directly across from the start of Boyes Drive, I made sure I set my alarm for 6.15am and was on the side of the road at 6.50am.  It was still dark when I peered from behind the...

Kalk Bay Photographs

The unpretentious bohemian fishing village of Kalk Bay lies between the mountains and the sea, just 25 minutes’ from Cape Town. Home to one of the last remaining working harbours in South Africa, not only can you meet the returning boats for the catch of the day at noon, but the little cobbled streets, shops and restaurants make this an easy place to while away the time and forget the fast pace of city living. Antique stores, second-hand book shops, art galleries and a thriving theatre have given rise to a real sense of community in Kalk Bay ... Useful Kalk Bay Links • Kalk Bay At...

Stellenbosch photographs

The beautiful town of Stellenbosch, roughly an hour from Cape Town, lies surrounded by the Stellenbosch Mountains in the Jonkershoek River Valley in one of the most picturesque settings in the Western Cape. The second oldest town in South Africa has fondly been called ‘Eikestad’ or city of oaks and its streets are lined with some of the most beautiful surviving examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture in the Cape. Dorp Street is a national monument and taking the time to walk around this cosy old part of Stellenbosch, with its secluded lanes, water furrows, cosmopolitan rest...

Our team of 5 hikers recently "did" the Otter Trail - herewith a preview of their experience of The Otter Trail in photographs. We look forward to bringing you a series of articles about the 41 kilometre, 5 day hike which changes in elevation from sea level to about 150m above. Though only 42.5 k...

Wash day in the Transkei (photographs)

In the lush hills of the Transkei, these women sway to an African rhythm in a burst of colour as they return from a day at the stream where they share stories and song making the chore of laundry more pleasurable as well as pleasing to the eye of the onlooker. The brightly dressed women leave the river, balancing wash baskets on their heads in the traditional manner. Big smiles belie the difficulty of accomplishing this frequent errand and contribute to the welcoming nature of the Xhosa homelands ... Horseback safari (photograph)

Once you’re lucky enough to have been on umpteen game drives and tried a walking safari or two, get up close and personal with South Africa’s wildlife on a horseback safari. If you’ve ever been on a nature walk and encountered Antelope, you’ll know you don’t see them for long. One whiff of “human” and they’re scampering off. If you’re on horseback, their senses are deceived and you’ll be able to meander among them. Game viewing by horseback is an ideal activity in the predator-free Bonamanzi Park.  A guide leads the way as your trusty steed clops along well worn paths and zebra, buck and wi...
