The Garden Route

The Garden Route includes one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in South Africa, if not the world. Between Heidelberg (Western Cape) and Storms River (Eastern Cape), the Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes, mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber-coloured rivers and golden beaches. These beaches are not only beautiful to look at and breath-taking to stroll along, they are also irresistible to those who love water sports like surfing, kiting, diving, spear fishing and deep-sea fishing. In addition, it is fantastic for SCUBA diving, snorkelling, shark cage diving, and whale watching, as the whales come to visit this part of the South African coast every year between June and December.

The area consists of a number of towns and areas, each with its own unique appeal. The Tsitsikamma and Storms River are known for their exquisite greenery and adventure sports, while Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are best known for their laid-back vibe and the variety of ocean-based excursions on offer. Wilderness and Sedgefield are sleepy towns, while George and Mossel Bay tend to be the bigger, busier centres.

There are a number of historical and cultural attractions along the Garden Route, as well as wine farms, game reserves and animal sanctuaries. These create a destination that is multifaceted and exciting for the whole family. This route links the provinces of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape, showcasing South Africa and its natural beauty to perfection …
