Hi, Iโm Ingrid Newbold from The Manderson Hotel & Conference Centre in Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape.
Stutterheim IS BEST KNOWN FOR its indigenous forest and mountains, this small town is nestled underneath the Kologha Mountains.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Gubu Dam for an incredible backdrop, the water is incredible and has beautiful clear steams. The river is also stocked with both brown and rainbow trout.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT that are great for photo shots are in the indigenous forest and of the mountain with the sun setting behind it or of the first rays of morning lighting up the mountain.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO enjoy the wonderful walks in the area or go horse riding through the mountains. Hillside Horses will arrange this for you and you can enjoy either a 2 or 3 hour experience.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO sit in the lounge by the fireplace and enjoy a hot cup of freshly brewed coffee or a glass of sherry.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS in Autumn, BECAUSE because the evenings are crisp, the days are warm and you are almost guaranteed good weather.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS The Manderson Hotel because if the weather is good one can enjoy breakfast on the deck overlooking the Amatola Mountains.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST The Manderson Hotel as the light lunch menu is delicious.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS answer, TRY THE The Manderson Hotel. The menu consists of a choice between 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts which change every evening. We also host Gourmet Evenings at various times of the year which include a 5 course gourmet meal with carefully selected wine accommpanying each course.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO the Stutterheim Country Club for a round of golf or to have a drink in their friendly pub. This course has been consistently rated as one of the best 9-hole courses in the region and is both challenging and affordable. You will find the course on Ken Muzzel Avenue.
Stutterheimโs BEST KEPT SECRET IS its abundant birdlife.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS mountain biking through the forest.
FOR SOME CULTURE, I LIKE TO GO TO the SADS Theatre. Come and see the art displayed in the foyer. This art is by local amateur artists and some of the works are available to purchase. If you’re needing to relax and chill out stop off at the coffee shop which is open daily from 15h00.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO take a drive out to Gubu Dam and take in the exquisite beauty.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY abseiling at Natural High. You can take a practise run on their 7.2 metre abseil tower and once you’ve got the hang of it you can try it out on the big rock. Remember to wear tight fitting clothing and you’ll need a minimum of 3 persons to take part (groups up to 20 persons can be accommodated).
MY FAVOURITE WALK IS through the forest to the top of the mountain and then taking in the incredible views. The Kologha Forest Trails start at Kubusie Plantation, only 7km outside Stutterheim. There are a number of day walks for varying fitness levels. The 17km Red Day Walk is a challenging circular route which takes you through indigenous forest and grassland. There are also shorter 8km, 7km and 3km walks to enjoy.
MY FAVOURITE bird WATCHING SPOT IS at the pond at the Manderson Hotel.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN June, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Stutt Stumble which is a 15km walk through the mountains to raise funds for charity.
MY FAVOURITE MUSEUM IS the Stationary Engine Museum. CHECK OUT THE really old engines which are still in mint running order.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS the Forest fairy trails where the children learning about conserving our precious environment.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS a picnic at Gubu Dam or the Kologha Forest picnic sites.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO to book the luxury suite at the Manderson and enjoy a gourmet dinner with lovely wines.
THE MOST SPECIAL THING HERE IS that the Stutterheim area has 7 different environmental biomes.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS popping down to East London or Hogsback for the day.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, we support local businesses and charities.
Sometimes the weather in Stutterheim is so clear that you think you are in Europe or the Swiss Alps
I Love Stutterheim because it is a small and beautiful town with a huge heart.
