Hi, I’m Alet from Greensleeves Guesthouse in Harrismith.
Harrismith IS BEST KNOWN FOR being a friendly town. It’s also well known as the halfway stop between Durban and Johannesburg.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT the Platberg Mountain which is in the Platberg Game Reserve adjoining the Botanical Garden.
THE BEST mountain PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT the Botanic Garden.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT the town hall and the other beautiful, old buildings in town. The town hall is a National Monument; an impressive sandstone and brick building that was built in 1907.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO swim and hike. The Platberg Game Reserve has a number of hiking trails to choose from.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO visit indoor places like La Moree Restaurant in town.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS October to April, BECAUSE the weather is not too cold! The winter months can be very chilly!
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS Heike’s Place at the Bergview Complex.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST La Moree or if you have children the Spur will suit you better!
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS Ocean Basket, TRY THE fish of the day. If you don’t like fish the pizza place is good too.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM Wimpy at The Bergview Complex.
MY FAVOURITE relaxing SPOT IS right at home – 4 Ouhout Avenue.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY La Moree.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO Legends.
Harrismith’s BEST KEPT SECRET are the spectacular views of the mountains. It’s also the centre of one of the five wool producing districts in the country.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS Friday morning tea at the Baptist Church.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO go to church.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY going to the Royal National Park in the Drakensburg. It’s only 50km from here so a very easy day trip.
MY FAVOURITE WALK IS near Injasuti which is just past Winterton. The scenery is spectacular.
MY FAVOURITE grocery SHOP IS the SPAR – they always have exactly what I need.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN August, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Berg Bohaai. There is a mountain bike race, horse riding, arts and crafts and a karaoke competition.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS the town hall, FOR ITS old, former glory.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS hiking or fishing; all available just outside Harrismith.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS to the Bergview Complex.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO shop at Platberg Studio.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS Sterkfontein Dam which is outside town on the way towards Bergville. It’s the third largest dam in the country.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS Mount Everest Farm.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I donate to the food project of Mama Khumalo or the HIV Orphan Hope House.
I Love Harrismith BECAUSE the weather is stunning.
