Hi, I’m Cheril from Khaya La Manzi Guest Lodge in Hibberdene on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal.
Hibberdene IS BEST KNOWN FOR its great fishing spots and its family vacation feeling. A small quiet town that’s perfect for family vacations.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT the beach or with one of the locals as he reels in his catch of the day. Why not try fishing off the rocks yourself and take a photo of your catch. Even if you don’t catch anything, the feeling you get standing out there on the beach or rocks, angling for the ‘big one’ are unique and uplifting. It’s great to look back and marvel.
THE BEST sunrise PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT the beach or from Khaya La Manzi’s decks up on the hill.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT Jolly Roger Putt-Putt or the Hibberdene Super Tube.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO go and relax on the beach or surf. Maybe even fit in a quick round of golf on the nine hole course up on the hill. There are two excellent golf courses nearby; Selborne Country Club and Port Shepstone Country Club.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO to go shopping or watch movies at any of the malls from Amanzimtoti in the North to Shelly Beach in the South. We are spoilt for choice being in the centrally situated Hibberdene.
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS May and June, BECAUSE the weather is not too hot but its still warm. The whales are starting to arrive on their annual migration and if you’re lucky, you might even catch the great sardine run.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS the Hibberdene Wimpy – do you get a creamier cup of coffee?
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST The Jolly Roger on our beachfront – you can work off your lunch with a round of putt putt. For another alternative try the famous Fifi’s Fresh Fish Take Away shop. You will not get a tastier piece of fish anywhere on the South Coast!
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM would be from Kentucky – what could be better than a fresh Rounder?
MY FAVOURITE thing IS to wake up early and lie listening to the ocean and the crashing waves. It’s a great way to start the day – and one I try not to take for granted.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY the Wild Coast Casino which is not so far away for those in search of a thrill or in peak season our very own Carousel Holiday Resort always has something going on for the teenage generation.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS just take a walk along the shops down by the beach – you will find them there discussing latest events in Hibberdene on most afternoons. The locals are passionate about their surfing and fishing.
Hibberdene’s BEST KEPT SECRET IS how central we are to everything. We are just a short drive to any possible activity in any direction.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS have a braai or get together. Beautiful clear night skies with the moon reflecting off a dark sea make a peaceful backdrop to an evening braai.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO take a stroll on the beach or sit on the upper deck at Khaya La Manzi and take in the awesome view.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY the adrenaline activities at Oribi Gorge like abseiling, white river rafting and the gorge swing. It’s a short drive to the gorge but its beautifully scenic and well worth it.
MY FAVOURITE WALK is the beach walk – these are organised walks by the community along the coastline – and they are a a good way to meet the locals too! A drive inland is always beautiful with the rolling hills of KwaZulu Natal on our doorstep. I love being within such easy reach of both sea and mountains.
MY FAVOURITE whale WATCHING SPOT IS is from the decks of Khaya La Manzi. In whale season, I like to watch from my window and spot a whale before I start the day. This doesn’t normally take long.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN Easter, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Hibb Couta classic fishing competition. Great fun for the whole family while the serious fisherman and woman try to win that boat!
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS Uncle Arthur’s animal farm in Southport. The trip to Durban‘s Ushaka is also not too far when coming from Hibberdene. The kids will love it.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS a picnic on the beach.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO go on a deep sea fishing charter or scuba diving.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I support the Lions monthly craft market down by the beach. The lions contribute enormously to the welfare and health of the community.
I Love Hibberdene BECAUSE it’s next to the ocean, safe, quiet and convenient.
