Hi, Iโm Simone Suchet from Himeville in the Drakensberg.
Himeville IS BEST KNOWN FOR peace and mountain views.
GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN AT Sani Top Chalet – the highest pub in Southern Africa by going on a Lesotho Tour with Drakensburg Adventures.
THE BEST autumn PICTURES CAN BE TAKEN AT Kenmo Lake.
OTHER HAPPY SNAPS AT The Giants Cup Nature Trail on the Sani Pass Road.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S GOOD, I LIKE TO swim in crystal clear mountain streams.
WHEN THE WEATHER’S BAD, I LIKE TO feel the warmth from a log fire (using wood from a local and sustainable source).
I THINK THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT IS anytime, BECAUSE each season is different and each has its gift of beauty and lure.
MY FAVOURITE BREAKFAST SPOT IS in the sunshine outdoors – watching sunbirds on the indigenous plants.
FOR LUNCH, I SUGGEST a picnic at Cobham – part of KwaZulu Natal Wildlife.
MY FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IS Moorcroft, TRY THE trout and the creme brulee.
BEST LATE NIGHT SNACK FROM any field in the district … for the nocturnal owl or endangered bat … humans go to bed early here!
MY FAVOURITE summer lunch SPOT IS Bushmans Nek Hotel.
FOR A NIGHT OUT ON THE TOWN TRY star gazing; the skies are crystal clear and unpolluted.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET LOCALS, GO TO the Himeville Arms.
Himevilleโs BEST KEPT SECRET IS its close proximity to Cobham Nature Reserve.
MY FAVOURITE THING TO DO WITH FRIENDS IS having a chat over a cup of tea.
FOR SOME LIVE MUSIC, I LIKE TO GO TO Christopher Duigan concerts in the Anglican Church which was amazing acoustics.
TO RELAX AND RESTORE MY SOUL, I LIKE TO walk in the mountains and photograph the pristine nature and wild flowers.
IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS, TRY mountain biking up Sani Pass.
MY FAVOURITE HIKE IS along the Gxalingenwa River.
MY FAVOURITE book SHOP IS Chapter Two.
MY FAVOURITE bird WATCHING SPOT IS in my garden or on Sani Pass Road.
IF YOU’RE HERE IN January, JOIN IN THE FUN AT the Sani Pass Wild Flower Walk organised by Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa.
MY FAVOURITE GALLERY IS Pucketty Farm. CHECK OUT THE local talent.
MY FAVOURITE BUILDING IS the Himeville Museum, FOR ITS sandstone walls.
TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN? A FUN OUTING IS the Giants Cup tea garden for eats and the family nature trail.
BEST CHEAP AND CHEERFUL OUTING IS Riverglen Cheese Farm.
WHEN MONEY’S NO OBJECT, I LIKE TO have dinner at Moorcroft.
THE MOST UNUSUAL THING I SEE HERE IS an increase in visiting bird species due to global warming.
MY FAVOURITE WEEKEND GETAWAY IS Lesotho.
WHEN I WANT TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY, I get involved with Underberg Primary School, the local Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa and local events such as Sani2C and Joburg2C mountain bike races as well as the Drakensberg Challenge Canoe Race.
Other: There are great mountain bike trails, hiking and overnighting in caves in the Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site, walks to excellent rock art panels with local, knowledgeable and passionate guides, pony trekking, birding trips on Sani Pass and into Lesotho.
I Love Himeville BECAUSE of its special, friendly, down to earth people, clean water, fresh air and magnificent mountain views.
